THE MORNING RANT: Slippery Slopes – The Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) Will Not Prohibit Polyamory Among Its Clergy

Presbyterian Polyamory.png

When I left the Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) a quarter-century ago, it was not specifically due to the assertively left-wing politics of the church. Rather, it was the realization that its clergy and leadership were not believers in the core tenets of the faith, and had substituted biblical teaching with political preaching. There was no longer a focus on Jesus’ divinity and resurrection, in large part because much (most?) of the clergy did not believe in it. The mission of the church had become left-wing politics, not heavenly salvation.

But because the Presbyterian Church of the 20th century (before its full political capture) was where I learned The Word as a child, and where I observed Christian role models showing me how to lead a life of Christian witness, I still monitor its heretical antics in the 21st century. I’m heartbroken by the actions of those wearing its vestments while desecrating its legacy, but I’m also fascinated as to the lengths they will go in mocking traditional Christian values while still calling themselves Christians. By the way, this is the church of U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico (D – TX).

Although there were battles in the PCUSA about “gays in the pulpit” that went on for decades, it was only in 2011 that the church finally abandoned its previous doctrine regarding fidelity in a heterosexual marriage (or chastity if single) for clergy. Homosexuals were now welcome in the pulpit, and by 2014 the church was fully on board with gay marriage.

But what about fidelity in marriage?

The denomination’s biennial “General Assembly” conference is occurring this month, and there is a proposal to be voted on that would require clergy of any sexual orientation to only engage in monogamous sexual relationships. The proposal is not being well received, and will almost certainly not be passed.

“As Polyamory Gains Visibility, Monogamy Faces a Vote in the Presbyterian Church (USA)” [Religion News Service – 6/04/2026]

The overture has generated strong reactions online but has not yet earned broad support from PCUSA groups. A separate proposal asks for theological studies on gender and sexuality, life-giving relationships and the Christian vocation of family that would support the denomination’s commitment to inclusion of different familial realities. Together these overtures show that as polyamory gains visibility in broader culture; it may have policy implications, especially in theologically progressive denominations.

Polyamory is now a part of the inclusive tolerance of those wearing the skinsuit of the (formerly-respectable) Presbyterian Church (USA). Polygamous marriage will almost certainly become a church sacrament in the near future.

“Seminarian” James Talarico attended the Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, which is more of a woke indoctrination camp than it is a place to learn about the Christian faith. As crazy as Talarico’s six genders and non-binary God may sound, that is what is being taught at this “Christian” seminary: “James Talarico Trained at Seminary that Teaches Social Justice Activism” [Washington Examiner – 3/13/2026]

Mr. Talarico is still a single man who shares a checking account with his mother. If he can cut those apron strings, find some mates, and get elected to the U.S. Senate, he can perhaps become the first member of Congress with six spouses – one for each of the genders he learned about at his polyamorous-friendly seminary.

To be fair, the Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary doesn’t explicitly state that there are just six genders, it leaves open the possibility that there are actually many more “gender expressions.”

Other Stuff I’m Writing About

My latest piece at the The American Spectator has been published. “ Breaking News: Summer Is Hot; It would be a statistical anomaly not to have numerous record temperatures recorded each year” discusses how it is a statistical certainty that there will be, on average, thousands of record-high, daily temperatures recorded each year. It’s also statistically inevitable that there will be, on average, hundreds of all-time hottest temperatures ever recorded across the planet, each and every year.

In the United States, temperature records date back about 100 to 140 years, depending on location. It would be fair to say that approximately 120 years is the typical historical database for a location’s temperature data. For each station, there is a record-high temperature for each day of the year, and also a record-low temperature for each day of the year. With 365 record-high temperatures for each station, spread over 120 years, that means that each station should record about three record-high temperatures each year, with a normal distribution. If there are fewer than three record highs being recorded in a given year, that would actually be below average.

This piece is not behind a paywall. I’d be honored if you’d give it a read.

17 Having been brought up in the Presbyterian church, I'm saddened that this once principled institution had succumbed to the Leftist drift that is inflicting every part of American life.
Again, the Left has taken over an institution, hollowed it out, perverted it's purpose, adorned itself in it's skin as a suit and demands that we all genuflect at it's new incarnation as if it's unchanged.
They have captured the media, entertainment, foundations, academia, NGO's, the medical fields and the non-profit universe.
And they are making deep inroads into sports as well.
Hopefully, we can regain control of some of these institutions, or at least create non-Leftist alternatives.
But it's going to be a war, one we must be willing to fight.

35 I'm in a weird spot, I guess. I've been attending a Global Methodist denomination for about two and a half years now. Before that I'd seriously considered a church in the Anglican Church in North America - a theologically conservative offshoot of the main Anglican church (though it has its issues...not to the mother Anglican church's extent at least). And I'd walked from the Roman Catholic Church, intentionally or not, decades previously.

Been having my doubts on faith, but that may just be the rough road I've been walking the past few years. At least the congregation I'm with is great and the pastors aren't talking empty blather.

49 The main three denominations of the Presbyterian church have lost over half their membership over the last 25 years. The biggest one is Talarico's PCUSA who has lost 60% of their followers while the two more conservative ones have gained a bit.

PCUSA no longer stands for anything other than organized wokeism - they certainly are no longer a Christian sect, and their membership decline shows this. Talarico's very public membership will accelerate this shrinking. It is quite possible that in 10-15 years the PCUSA will essentially no longer exist.

AS was noted elsewhere, there is a huge shift in the Catholic Church, the old gay priests are dying off, and we are seeing a huge number of new entrants who really want to be catholic. There is still the exodus of those who haven't really been following the church teachings much at all, let alone actually regularly attending mass. So the numbers remain flat, or perhaps even a bit down, but the number now more accurately reflects the number of practicing catholics. We still have our institutional issues, and a pope too caught up in politics, but we mostly ignore that and try to do our best, often with failure in the mix, to follow Christ and God's commands.

78 2/3 of the PCUSA has walked out the door over the last 20 years. Membership was once 2.3 million; now it’s below 1 million and steadily falling at about 5% per year.

You may note that an actual majority walked away; it’s a good example of how the left takes over and destroys an institution. The leadership and the seminaries were taken over first; and they started pushing leftist ideology everywhere.

Why didn’t conservative members fight back? Some tried; some large congregations voted to leave completely and went to different denominations. But those stuck in a church that had become hopelessly leftist found that such a church wasn’t worth a big fight that was a guaranteed loss; there are other churches, other believers, far better to just walk away and leave with the wreckage of what they’ve done.

84 People have actually been reported to their bishops by other clergy for saying that they would bless such a marriage, so it is a dangerous move to make for many clergy.

I was once asked to officiate a ceremony for one couple in a polycule and I really wanted to because I loved them dearly, but I wasn't willing to risk my career to do so, as there would be pictures on the internet and it would get out.

all of the people I know in polyamorous relationships are so incredibly intentional about communication, boundaries, respect and care.

However, I am not, at this time, willing to risk my career to do so. There are more important battles for me to risk my career for in the church. I have a few polycules in my current ministry and they know they are loved and welcome and cared for in our community, but they would not want me to risk my career for something they can have their friends do.

While I believe we need a radical rethinking of relationships and commitment in the church, we are very, very far away from having a conversation that will lead to open endorsement of polyamory in the ELCA.

Actually, our church has multiple music genres focused on specific masses. And regardless of the style of music the songs must be sound theologically or our music director won't use them. Some masses have 70's catholic folk music (terrible in almost all respects), choir based traditional hymms, chant, or contemporary christian "pop" played by a praise band. Pick your poison.

Defense of Marriage Act - The Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) was a United States federal law passed by the 104th United States Congress and signed into law by President Bill Clinton on September 21, 1996. It banned federal recognition of same-sex marriage by limiting the definition of marriage to the union of one man and one woman, and it further allowed states to refuse to recognize same-sex marriages granted under the laws of other states.

👉Section 3 codified non-recognition of same-sex marriages for all federal purposes, including insurance benefits for government employees, social security survivors' benefits, immigration, bankruptcy, and the filing of joint tax returns. It also excluded same-sex spouses from the scope of laws protecting families of federal officers, laws evaluating financial aid eligibility, and federal ethics laws applicable to opposite-sex spouses.[1]: 23–24

Then that changed: June 26, 2015, Obergefell v. Hodges 👍

So, yes, let's be idiots & recognize polygamous marriage & other formerly unconventional relationships & that will go well towards breaking U.S. social & financial laws/systems listed ☝🏻 and more.

Hierarchical churches usually vest ownership of the properties of individual churches with the parent body. So often it means walking away from the church built locally with the blood, sweat, and tears of the founders because some perverts in the hierarchy want to suck every last dollar from the real estate when the church inevitably folds.

119 It’s been fascinating, if frustrating, watching this turnaround. The presence of massive infidelity/promiscuity as a defining part of gay culture was once something the ruling class tried hard to pretending wasn’t there.

I recently read an Omni magazine factoid from November 1981 reporting on a mysterious “new” disease “claiming the lives of homosexual men… baffling epidemiologists at the Center for Disease Control… in New York City, San Francisco, and Los Angeles…”

Because “most of the victims don’t know one another” “the diseases are not believed to be infectious”. They suspect something like “Inhalant anesthetics… since many gays use them”.

It is impossible that none of the researchers knew that sex between gay men who did not know each other was common; it was so common that gay writers such as Armistead Maupin pretty much made their name writing about it. But the anonymous promiscuity of gay culture was one of those things virtuous people didn’t talk about, and, if truly virtuous, completely compartmentalized.

I get the implication, but you can mooch off your parents -- or a sugar daddy or whoever -- without sharing a checking account. In fact, the way leeching is done in today's world is through digital apps (apple pay, cash app, doordash, etc).

If you want to hit this creep on the fact that he's a layabout leech, then go for it. But then say just that. The fact that he has a checking account with his mom standing alone doesn't move the needle. And I'll bet a lot of people have joint or shared accounts with parents.

MoBo ROMs may be in a socket or may be soldered. In either case, I would think it to be exceedingly rare to purchase a new ROM chip and BIOS revision. Those are typically updated via software after downloading from MoBo manufacturers website, then following their precise instructions.

199 There’s always been areas of weakness with both hierarchical churches and non-hierarchical ones.

A Church with a hierarchy does a better job of policing what’s happening in individual churches, but when the leadership goes bad, all the churches in it sink together. (What happened to PCUSA)

Congregational and other independent churches avoid that risk, but there’s little to no oversight to stop a small group from taking it over and making it their playground. (Like the cowboy church mentioned)

I've done some of that at our parish, schola is really fun to sing, but takes work for it to sound good. If you have a weak voice, schola will find it.

I feel like if you're a traditional protestant, the only real choices now are Evangelical and Baptist. But I'm not an expert.

It's funny that it's considered "hardcore fundamentalism" to just say you dont want a Church that celebrates homosexuality.

204 I read an interesting book a few months ago about hymns. The Stories of Hymns by George William Rutler. It’s basically a series of hymns on one side and then some anecdotes or a bit of history on the other.

One of the funniest (which isn’t a high bar because the book isn’t specifically funny) was this anecdote about Edward Caswell changing the title and first line of “Hark! A Thrilling Voice is Sounding”

Out of respect for the sensibilities of overreaching choristers, whose number is legion, Caswall’s opening verse was altered for its second printing in 1852 from the line first published three years before: “Hark, an awful voice is sounding…”

No you just get a POD on the account. Payment on Death. It's like a beneficiary. You can do the same on stocks. And as I posted above , you can just write checks on your parents checks to pay their bills. It's retarded to be on your parents account when you are both young or healthy and a big red flag.

208 >>This is a weak attack because most people have these types of accounts with their families. A joint account is often just a way to leave the money to your child without a trust or will. There are also convenience accounts where the child pays the parent's bills because the parent cannot get around or manage their affairs anymore.

Yes, that might be the case with elderly parents and if this was a one off. That does not appear to be the case with Talarico. Did your parents pay your moving expenses when you were 32? Mine did not. Not even when I was 18. There's a pattern with Talarico and it does not suggest taking care of elderly parents.

Just like Platner. Just like Mamdani.

=======
A problem of churches is that buildings, salaries, and other costs have to be met by the congregation or denomination and that then requires raising money all the time from the congregants. And those congregants that donate more money feel they should have more say in church governance and so it goes and ministers in effect become part time or even full time fund raisers.

222 The story about Talarico is petty, of course, but the reason it has some resonance is that Talarico’s campaign so far has consisted of saying “but I’m a manly man! Look at me eat bbq (very daintily and carefully) !!! Look at me sit in a pickup truck (uncomfortably) !!! Look I have a beard now )that I started growing when my consultant told me to last week) !!!

It’s a natural rejoinder to say “sure thing manly man, how come you still use Mom’s checking account?”

He’s a whiny little emo boy cosplaying as an adult.

I wouldn't let the glass patio door be a deal-breaker. Put an awning over the patio to keep the high Summer sun from pouring directly into the room. Drapes on the inside will make the room warmer in Winter.

The sliding doors are double-paned, so that will help prevent heat from leaking out. And yes, putting up drapes in the winter. It would probably be my dining room more than my office, so I might not be in there that much, not like the other rooms.

I'm thinking about an awning or even a small sloped roof for the deck. The uprights and wooden slats are already there.

I wonder what the DOJ can really do. SF Giants are a private organization, and they can compel speech they wish to promote. You've got a freedom of religion thing they can work with, but I think this is mostly sending a message to MLB that if you want to push this, it might not end like you think. It also shows that the general population is getting tired of "pride" since they are now being allowed to share their true feelings about it.
