If not, she and all her children will be slaughtered when the old sultan dies. Royal inheritance in that culture consisted of having about fifty wives and two or three hundred kids. By Falero's standard, this is a demure, modest portrait. Not sure where I would hang it but it is a lovely painting with its vibrant colors and the realism of the woman. Her skin tones are natural, her figure not exaggerated, and her expression is relaxed and quiet as she regards the ornament. Despite the eroticism it is a pleasant, contemplative moment in the woman's life.
Looking at some of his other nudes on the Wiki page I have to wonder if he influenced Frank Frazetta. The buxom (understatement) woman remind me of Frazetta's covers. Posted by: JTB at June 15, 2026 09:51 AM (yTvNw) Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at June 15, 2026 09:51 AM (O0L8i) 64

This was a big problem with the Ottomans/Islam. Multiple wives and no set order of inheritance. It comes down to who can seize power. The Europeans adopted monogamy and rigid inheritance rules to stop this sort of conflict on a ruler dying and it is one of the reasons that Europe surpassed Islam in the Middle Ages. Posted by: 18-1 at June 15, 2026 09:53 AM (sKqQm) Yep. It's often assumed that this comes from Judeo-Christian religion, but in fact monogamy-by-law with fixed rules of inheritance came from Roman jurisprudence. Jews (and hence, early Christians) at the time of Jesus were polygamous (not required, but allowed). Paul introduced the monogamy thing, I believe. He was Jewish, of course, but heavily Romanized. Looking it up, the name Rabbeinu Gershom is showing up among the Ashkenazim as slapping a herem on that shit. 11th century in the Christian era. The Sephardic community over in Muslim Spain were still allowing it. I suspect it was very rare for most Jews in Europe already though. As for the Bible, it plays a similar role as for slavery. As an example of the importance of inheritance, Pepin the Short, son of Charles Martel, inherited jointly with his brother Carloman (who eventually retired to a monastery) but the son of Charles's second wife went to war with Pepin and Carloman - distracting from his rule several times.
Pepin then had two sons but only from one woman. Charlemagne and another Carloman. Fortunately for Charlemagne this Carloman died young leaving him the sole ruler of the Franks...and Charlemagne with a strong, unified realm, kicked Muslim ass and created a large portion of what we think of as Europe Posted by: 18-1 at June 15, 2026 10:16 AM (sKqQm) 127

Lotsa yapping about "empty seats" at WC. - The “empty seats” photos are either before the game started or right after the 2nd half started when people are still getting food or using the bathroom. And most of the “empty seats” shown are the VIP seats where there’s a longer type thing available for seat holders, with catered food and shit. Hmm I wonder if those people will be out of their seats every now and then enjoying the amenities? All you have to do is look at prices on StubHub or SeatGeek and you’ll quickly realize demand is through the roof for seats. Posted by: Heroq at June 15, 2026 10:23 AM (xg+/D) 141

Yeah it’s cheap in Europe because you’re EuroPOOR. and we’re rich. Spending $1k on a ticket for a sporting event is unheard of there. >195 Brit Lass said the impression growing up was that all American streets are just people shooting at each other. She was shocked at how peaceful it is and how people tend to (or tended to) mind their own business.
--- Love the meme that says "How the rest of the world views Americans." It shows a family standing around a gas grill cooking a half a cow and everyone is holding a gun, even the dog! Posted by: Quarter Twenty at June 15, 2026 10:51 AM (izy1S) 209
Assortative mating done by the upper class was the predominate reason--marriages were often matches done for money and the appropriate social level of the spouse, not for love. So you got Lady Chatterly's lover and on the other hand, ministers of government with mistresses.
The very wealthy and some of the upper class still more or less follow similar rules--e.g. Warren Buffet's wife recruited a mistress for him when she wanted to do her own thing (IIRC, art mebbe?). These couples stay together for finances, children, familiarity with each other, and compatible social statuses, not necessarily for love or sex. *cough* Posted by: FDR at June 15, 2026 10:52 AM (Riz8t) 210
Plus quasi wives, aka concubines. The old version of screwing the hired help.

The brit Marxist culture of envy is ingrained and keeps everyone in everyone else's business. "We're all in this together," they threatened. "Don't get ideas above your station."
Posted by: ... That is most of the world, America is generally the exception. We imported obnoxious foreigners with those ideals and some worthless nepots adopted it here and it has metastasized in our upper classes. As one person put it, we have millionaires like Sanders or Warren upset that they are considered poor and not the same social status compared to a trillionaire. Maslow's hierarchy indeed. Self actualization for too many with too much money plus time on their hands means they seek power over others rather than go out and do something productive. >>> 154 I liked Bout 2 of the UFC match, where the guy suddenly and swiftly snatched up his opponent, and wrapped him up like an Alien Face Hugger, taking him down.
Posted by: gp Didja see the weather forecast for the event. The Weather Channel @weatherchannel UFC Freedom 250 is facing a chaotic weather setup on the White House South Lawn, with a 60% chance of thunderstorms, heavy downpours, and wind gusts up to 34 mph threatening to delay the outdoor fights. On top of the storm risk, brutal D.C. humidity is driving a triple-digit heat index alongside massive swarms of mosquitos and gnats that fighters will have to battle inside the cage. While the venue’s massive 92-foot overhang will keep the octagon dry, a single lightning strike within eight miles will trigger an automatic 30-minute freeze on the entire event. - But Trump knows Zeus personally and he fixed it for him. U.S. simply has better sports.
And it's all because of one thing: the comeback. Posted by: Change my mind at June 15, 2026 10:47 AM (izy1S) Why does it have to be better or worse? Some people like Coke some like Pepsi. Or even better some like both. I don’t get this mentality where you have to hate soccer because you like football. You can enjoy both, now laws against it. And most people do just that.
