Evening and morning to all the late toilers, early risers, and satellites and satraps of the vast AoSHQ Empire!
I woke early, not the fault of the big black cat for once; I got enough sleep, but I don't quite feel like I did. Coffee is helping. Yesterday I was surprised at how swiftly the apt. maintenance people came when I called about the bathroom ceiling drip. Twenty minutes and they were here. They fixed the drip, but then the A/C was not cooling right. When I called back, the guys were here in about ten minutes. They'd left a breaker switch off. Problem solved in a twinkling. I'm not used to this quick service -- the way the place used to be in the '90s. Maybe I got lucky with the timing and these two guys had little else on their plate. I spent 10 dollars today on a single response from Claude.
It was related to the decidability of the GB conjecture using computational methods, which PM has discussed here previously. The result is a proof of definitely not no, which is actually something as definite maybe is real progress against the parity problem using sieve methods. It's the result of 6 years of work. The document is structured for reviewers and one can easily feed it to their AI of choice for dog of choice for easy assessment and similar result. So I'm happy to report I've done things with stuff. Also we are going for a NIPT tomorrow. I mentioned before I'm 57. That matters. It's also divisible by 3 which you can tell by summing the digits and dividing by three. If the remainder is 0, it's divisible by 3. I sure hope our 2 becomes 3, but only God knows. Posted by: meh at June 10, 2026 05:17 AM (kK7U2) 19
Skip, what year and model is your ailing truck? And how is the Sonata to drive? I've said for a while that Hyundai/Genesis has some very nicely styled cars. If something happened to the Buick, and I couldn't find a 2017-19 model LaCrosse or a nice Cadillac, I would probably have to go Japanese (Lexus 300) or Korean.

Yesterday I went out for a walk about 12:00 in the afternoon It was already kind of warm. I met an older man with his dog on the entrance e to the boardwalk through the woods. He had a little dog that looked like a smaller version of border collie-black and white . I told him the dog was cute . He Is 12. "He can't do the long walks anymore.he said He said Only about to the end of the boardwalk " ( which is about a mile ). I did not tell the man that I'm not twelve and I can't do long walks anymore either 😉especially when it's about 80 degrees.

Outside temp is 77-78 F., depending on the source. It did not rain yesterday, so I don't know why the temp is a little lower than Tuesday morning's. In either case, I have to Bataan-Death-March myself out there for my exercise, today and at least one more day this week.

While out and about yesterday I gassed up at the Exxon convenience station with the ethanol-free fuel. It remains at $3.69 -- a dollar or so *less* than at the few other stations that offer it. Their regular 87 octane E10 has fallen to $3.49, down from $3.69 about ten days ago.
Mindful of how the JumpStart chain in Kansas scammed us by offering cheaper premium E20 (= lousy mileage) without labeling it as such, I wonder if this convenience store is doing the same. But my gas mileage is improved on the stuff they label as E0. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at June 10, 2026 05:32 AM (wzUl9) 26

Posted by: no one of any consequence at June 10, 2026 05:20 AM (qFwJc) Yesterday I chased down a bug on an analog input pin abstraction function in DxCore. When I polled the ADC value of a temperature sensor it was pulling a 4095 which indicates an open circuit...despite the multimeter showing continuity and correct impedence. 2 hours later I finally ask Claude to read the raw adc instead of through dxcore. Low and behold the raw value was correct....dxcore was messing the whole thing up. Posted by: Defenestratus at June 10, 2026 05:33 AM (WYStd) 27

The furry thugs are well. Last night Dagny was displaying actual affection to Linda, climbing by herself up to the sofa arm next to her and bumping her fluffy head against Linda's arm. @20/no one of any consequence: "Funny. After spending my career writing software for embedded systems, I just don't care about it anymore."
Pretty common. After 30 years in IT, my enthusiasm level for messing with hardware, software, or network configuration reached "I'm tired, boss. I want out." I watched more and more complex software be created with programmers being lazy and bringing in an ever expanding list of huge libraries, and I realized what was coming - a level of complexity where nobody really knew what was lurking in there in terms of security problems to come. And today (now) we're at the point. Tons of zero-day exploits popping out as jump-scares for admins and users alike. The light at the end of the tunnel really was an oncoming train. When I was abruptly thrown out my last IT job due to a layoff caused by a merger/acquisition, I came to a very strong conclusion of: "I don't ever want to go back to that. No, I can't go back to that. No. Nope. Hell no. NOOOOOO." (You get the idea.) Now I drive school bus. Strangely, this is much less stressful, despite the screaming and misbehaving kids. (Yeah, it was time for me to get out of IT.) Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at June 10, 2026 05:42 AM (O7YUW) 32

@29/SpeakingOf: "Mark Lynch really didn't stand a chance once the attack ads started which informed everybody he was convicted of cocaine trafficking.
How he thought he was going to keep that secret is beyond me." I'm reminded out of the scene in Heavy Metal (Captain Lincoln F. Sternn's trial) - at the very end, Sternn pays off Hanover Fist for the utter disruption of the trial, and then pulls a lever and sends Hanover out into space now that he's served his purpose. Maybe Lynch just played out Hanover's role. Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at June 10, 2026 05:47 AM (O7YUW) 37

Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at June 10, 2026 05:42 AM (O7YUW) I imagine it is less stressful, at least when you aren't driving a bus with the lives of dozens of kids in your hands. Go to work, drive. Off a few hours, drive again. It's a lot easier than looking at computer code n a screen all day, I'm sure. @Wolfus: The head-butt for attention is a cat thing I absolutely loved. Dagny's getting downright cute.
"Big black Stirling is due for a new toy tomorrow, for his fourth anniversary living with me." Go to a grocery and ask for a strong flat cardboard box that was used to ship in a very fragrant fruit. Stirling will probably rub against, love, and stay in that box many times over the next 2 to 3 days (if Dagny doesn't kick him out and do that herself.) Our cats always loved when we'd bring those boxes home. Toys: I used to buy the cats catnip filled "mice" (strong canvas and cloth layers sewn together with catnip inside.) They lasted about 2 days and then catnip everywhere, and stoned kitties rolling around like idiots. As for longer lasting cat toys: I dunno, cats are masters of destruction. I always found the really cheap stuff (Strips of paper, yarn, crinkly bags) were the things mine loved the most. Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at June 10, 2026 05:57 AM (O7YUW) 46

@43/SpeakingOf: "If it wasn't for the rowdy children, and the nuts on the roads these days you'd probably be in a permanent state of bliss."
True. I love a nice pleasant drive, and some days I get it. Other days though, when the kids have trod on my last nerve and I snap verbally, or traffic gets REALLY stupid around me. People in cars seem to think they can pull sudden moves around a bus because it starts and stops slow and they can just squeak around us because they're faster, creating dangerous conditions that could cause a collision. This has been an ongoing thing at intersections lately (particularly 4-way stops) when I wait to take my turn per who arrived first so I'm last in the sequence, then I start out in the intersection, taking my right of way, and one of the other 3 gets stupid and jackrabbits out in front of me. Brakes. Horn. Frustration. Every other driver looking at the one that jack-rabbited with the "WTF" expression. Seeing that too many times lately. Still less stressful than IT for me. My son had a very long work day yesterday in the heat which culminated in his taking a co- worker to pick up his car at a maintenance place. Therefore he missed the church young adult group going out for pizza and seeing the movie "Obsession" ( The kind young people had saved him some pizza) . He said, "Maybe I should have told the co-worker that i had a dinner engagement This s***s" I told him that he did the right thing. Besides, he can always suggest another movie such as "Deliverance Day"

The kids on large buses have seat-belts where your Husband drives? Ours are still without the belts, only the occasional harness for particularly problematic children.
