Wednesday Night ONT - June 11, 2026 [TRex]

06102026-agnieszkamonk-lobster-cage-2073032_640.jpg

Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans. The bar is open and freshly re-stocked.

Welcome to the Wednesday night ONT which means another edition of random overnight fun and games. Pull up a chair and join the fun. Good will offerings of amusing puns are encouraged. Pants are optional but why would you be wearing pants for the ONT? Be nice to your fellow commenters and AoS contributors. This is a Tucker, Candace, Megyn and Bill Kristol free zone. Please.

Will reading the ONT content improve your odds of winning the Powerball lottery? Dunno but couldn't hurt to read the content and ensure you're right with the universe.

Antares Achieves Criticality of Mark-0 Reactor

Antares today announced that its Mark-0 microreactor achieved initial criticality at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) under U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) authorization - making Antares the first private company to bring an advanced reactor to criticality under the DOE Reactor Pilot Program. The demonstration was conducted in partnership with DOE, INL, and BWX Technologies, Inc. (BWXT), with integration and observation support from the U.S. Army.

This reactor validates key reactor physics parameters for Antares' reactors and contributes verification and validation data back to the Department of War's Project Pele. The Mark-0 was authorized by DOE under the Reactor Pilot Program, with the U.S. Army integrated throughout as a future end user. This model of interagency coordination directly supports the Army's microreactor deployment timeline.

The demonstration and the licensing pathway it establishes represent a key step toward deploying electricity-producing microreactors for U.S. military installations by September 30, 2028.

Shakeup at JPL? Control over iconic NASA center could change for 1st time in nearly 100 years

NASA plans to open up competition for control over the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), which has historically been operated by the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). This move is part of an even larger reorganization by the agency (though NASA asserts that this doesn't mean layoffs).

"NASA announced today that they will compete the contract for operating JPL, with Caltech's current agreement ending on Sept. 30, 2028," reads a statement today (May 22) from JPL. Caltech has managed JPL since the lab's inception in the 1930s, and has done so for NASA since the agency was established in 1958. According to the JPL statement, Caltech has been preparing for this possible transition since last summer, so the news "comes as no surprise." But the potential change is part of a larger shakeup for the agency.

Until now, JPL and Caltech have been heavily intertwined, with mission personnel, scientists, leadership, and others working closely "across the pond" between JPL and Caltech. JPL mission and program meetings often include Caltech employees and sometimes even take place on its Pasadena campus.

Wednesday ONT Department of Resting Places

Never seen this before, not new, and don't have any idea how it found me. Pretty sure that means that I must share it with you.

A visit to Plot E - final resting place of the the dishonored dead.

Plot E of the Oise-Aisne American cemetery in northern France.

Go ahead and look. You won't find it listed on the Veterans Administration website, nor any of the literature provided by the cemetery. Maps will show Plots A, B, C, and D only, those containing 6012 American dead from WWI. Google Earth will just show an expanse of green. It's like it doesn't exist, which is exactly what its creators intended.

But it's very much there, and serves a necessary if somewhat unsavory purpose.

Plot E is where American servicemen are buried who were executed - by firing squad or hanging - for capital crimes committed in the European theatre during or shortly after WWII.

Some of the victims were children. Many were women. Most are forgotten by the modern age, though at least one - Sir Eric Teichman, killed on his ancestral estate confronting two U.S. soldiers poaching on the land - was a prominent member of society who still has his own Wikipedia page.

Bona fide T. rex leather purse is going up for auction - and it could fetch $500K

trexhandbag.jpg

Bidding paddles are sure to go flying in the air as auctioneer Alexandre Giquello of Hôtel Drouot in Paris, France, accepts offers on the first-ever handbag made with collagen from lab-grown Tyrannosaurus rex fossils, which were reportedly exhumed in the US...

With an asking price ranging from €300,000 to 500,000 ($347,081 to $578,469), the ancient accessory is an expensive, albeit exclusive piece that will go to the highest bidder with the deepest pockets.

Following an extensive process - including harvesting T. rex DNA, conducting phylogenetic analyses, inserting the materials into a specialized bio-leather cell line genome, transforming the cells into skin and sustainably tanning the skin to create the leather - the scientists have managed to make primeval magic.

Should I be impressed with the scientific homage to prehistoric dino ancestors or horrified at the involuntary transformation of T. rex DNA into a purse?

Eess next...dino wear. Very nice.

YouTube is filled with niche channels. When anyone can broadcast their own content, the barriers to entry are low. The possibility of monetization creates incentives to create content. Of course, easier access does not mean higher quality. There is a staggering amount of garbage, but there are gems out there.

People with very specific content somehow get connected to others with sympathies for that specific content. Instead of "broadcasting," it is called "narrowcasting." More to say about this in coming ONTs, but we're going to feature one niche YouTube channel with a surprisingly (at least to me) large following each Wednesday.

Tonight's feature is Matt Horn, the drum tech. 96k+ subscribers and videos that often exceed 100k views each. His videos are usually his point of view as he goes about his working day and does his job. Nothing fancy. No highly polished graphics or editing. No bad narrator or overhyped dramatic background music.

The Pittsburgh police scanner keeps giving. Tonight's offering is particularly bountiful. Thank you people of Pittsburgh and thank you Pittsburgh scanner!

Friendly, helpful guy that I am I showed them how it worked and started describing how area codes with low numbers went to more populated areas and how at one time you'd get a live operator to help you.

I think I scared them a little.

Friendly, helpful guy that I am I showed them how it worked and started describing how area codes with low numbers went to more populated areas and how at one time you'd get a live operator to help you.

I think I scared them a little.

There is a perfectly logical explanation for this. The dude riding the motorbike just broke the monkey out of a make-shift cage. He had been forced to perform slave labor dancing for an Organ Grinder who was part of the City Restoration program at Bakery Square. The Grinder gave pursuit, but the monkey was near sighted, so the Motorbike dude took no chances and was macing everyone.

And most theropods had feathers, the way that pterosaurs and azhdarchids had pycnofibers and were "fuzzy".

My dad's old phone had no dial. You just picked up the receiver, hit the hook once, and told the operator whom you wished to speak with.

We had a party line, with four other houses on the line. Best way to catch up on the local gossip, since most of the ladies were home all day and once the housework was done, they yakked endlessly. Heaven forbid I should want to phone a friend. No time for that, honey.

Should add that the line thought to be related to birds is the Theropods, the Bird Hipped dinosaurs. Most of the predators and 2 legged ones. The Sauropods, the great big ones, still look like they completely died out, as did the marine creatures like the Mosasaur.

The first I visited D.C. was in '98, when I met a guy who constantly got calls from tourists. The city was small enough that local calls didn't need an area code, so you had to prepend a 1- to call out.

So as I understand it, what would happen is that if you were visiting D.C., tried to call someone from a certain place, and didn't preface it with 1- for long distance, then the area code, prefix, and first digit of the suffix would turn into his local seven-digit number and ring his cell phone before you could finish dialing.

So he turned it into a sort of game, a magic trick, telling strangers where they were from, since he knew the area code and prefix they were attempting to call.

An actual P.O.T.S. 48-volt landline, or an "IP phone" that works on their system?

Seems like the redundant 48-volt Ma-Bell system would be the only reason to put up with a landline, now. It'll still work when the internet's down, or the 110/220 power is out.

270 William Shatner was at a screening of "Star Trek II" and it was amazing how lively he was for a 95 year old. He had a lot of great stories (well rehearsed I'm sure), never really showed his age other than occasionally groping for a proper name, and wandered back and forth on the stage, rather than sitting the entire time.

If I was going to live to be 95, which I honestly hope doesn't happen, I'd like to be in his condition. And yeah, I imagine the Metrons will invite him to their planet and gain a bit of wisdom.

Not a good director at all, a great actor (in the right role), but a hell of a human being.

They call landing on Mars seven minutes of terror. It takes about 7 minutes from atmospheric entry to touchdown. Average one-way light time from Mars is about 14 minutes, so by the time they get the signal the lander has started the entry sequence, it's been 7 minutes since it either landed or crashed.

296 Thanks for the ONT, T-Rex. I had forgotten that song by Billy Joel and really love it.

We used to deep sea fish with my father off of Panama City, FL every year. He also had a large Cris-Craft he mostly like to speed in (being a Marine). We did take it to the MS Gulf and he kept land in sight as he was crazy and did not have a radio. I was never fazed.

The one time we took my new husband fishing on the boat he always chartered was during a bad storm. So bad once we got out of the bay we would be in troughs with waves over our heads. I know this because I was harfing off the side of the boat, holding onto ropes in the rain. All of my men were below decks but I could not deal with it. The five of them had bunks and would look at me when I'd go plead with my father to tell the captain to turn back. It was hideous to the point with dehydration I thought the guy was trying to kill us.

Never before or since have had motion sickness. I tried hard not to puke until the fat first mate wiped sweat off his blubber with a paper towel and then ate a baloney and cheese sandwhich at 9am.

We had survival laughing hysteria all the way back to the beach house. Initiation for my husband.

Yesterday evening we had F-35's doing maneuvers in and out of mountain canyons. Normally fly overs for holidays. I finally went out on the deck and got a video or two but then they quit, seeing me in my nightgown and all. Poor pilots. It was loud and they were right above our house. 303 There was an awful lot of "stuff" "liberated" by US troops during WWII. As my stepfather described it, it was mainly booze and food, until they got into Germany proper. Then it got a lot darker. It wasn't just guys grabbing a cake and a bottle of wine, and dragging the family couch out into the yard to sit on in mud covered gear. In Germany it became wanton destruction, grabbing all the food and breaking the furniture. Any negative interaction with Germans could turn real ugly in an instant. There were some guys who went over the line, gray as it was.

I don't think I want to live to be 95yrs old unless that's the plan, or my husband manages to live this long as well. His family don't live as old as mine.

Looked that up. It was the Schiaparelli EDM lander, which was to land in Oct. 2016. It made entry and was executing the descent and landing sequence but the signal was lost about 1 minute before touchdown. They didn't know what happened, but the MRO orbiter imaged the landing area and saw a black spot.

What happened was the IMU got saturated (overloaded with data) somehow and thought it was lower and closer to the surface that it actually was and jettisoned the parachute way too early. It hit the ground at about 200 mph.

NASA has plans for to orbit and probe Uranus, with the UOP mission. It's still in the concept phase. Travel time will be long, and it would use those low energy lollygagging trajectories with multiple gravity assists. If launched in 2031, it would be 2044 before it got there.

I was 11 when we got dial phones, but, we were one of the first exchanges in the country with DDD (Direct Distance Dialing). No more asking the operator for "long distance", then getting the LD operator, then telling her what city, then getting the local.operator there and finally giving her the number you wanted.
You just miraculously picked up.the phone, dialed "1" and an area code and the number.
Of course, in the beginning that only worked into the bigger cities. If you wanted to call BF, Iowa, you dialed "0", and asked for " long distance", like always.

One cosmonaut was killed on the Soyuz 1, when the parachute failed to deploy for landing. Three more were killed on Soyuz 11, when a cabin valve, due to damage, opened up and depressurized the capsule during reentry.

I think the Soyuz 11 dudes are actually the only ones counted as "space fatalities" because they were above some boundary, maybe 100 miles up or some shit, so they actually died in space. The soyuz 1 dude died on earth by going meteor. I don't think any of ours are counted as "died in space". I thought that was pretty interesting.

Re Soyuz 11, reading about it, the explosive bolts that separated the orbital and descent modules fired all at once, rather than in sequence, and that heavy jolt damaged that valve. It turned out that one of the cosmonauts had unbuckled and was attempting to manually close the valve. He didn't have enough time.

Alexei Leonov had advised they close all those valves manually before reentry just in case, because he didn't trust the automatic valves. After that, he tested it -- it was a handwheel that took over 20 turns to close, and took a minimum of 1 minute under flight conditions to close. It took only 40 seconds for the cabin to go to full vacuum.

Every IP phone I've come across used locally generated power, of whatever voltage. When the local grid goes down, your ip.phone goes with it (unless you have battery or generator backup at your house). The old landline -48v came from the CO, which had a stack of wet cells and a big diesel generator if the outage lasted more than about a half hour.
Incidentally, the reason for the minus voltage was for electrolysis. A positive to ground source would plate from the copper wire to the old lead sheathed cables and open the circuit. The negative voltage plated from the lead sheath to the wires. Didn't bother the wire and the.lead was a lot thicker.

Indeed, I have some sympathy for the people who think the first moon landing was hoaxed, because it is plausible that they would have done anything to beat the Soviets, including lying to the world.

The mirrors you can bounce lasers off of show we have actually been there, so I don't have patience for those that doubt all of them. But the question of the first one comes down to whether the spooks thought the Russkies might beat us there, and you can't trust anything they say, so we may never know.

It's a wonder the high pressure pure O2 cabin atmosphere didn't burn them in the butt before Apollo 1. Mercury and Gemini both used it. Now, sitting on the ground before launch, you had to pressurize above 1 atm to seal everything and keep outside air from getting in. The bends were a big concern if N2 got in there.

Now, for Gemini, rather than an escape tower, they had ejection seats, which fired with rockets. Had they ever had to use those, they would've probably set the astronauts off like torches with all that O2 soaking in their space suits. And it could've well killed them anyway, as peak acceleration was over 20g.

The Russians were capable of monitoring all our Moon missions. They wouldn't have let us get away with faking it. Others also were capable, and did track and monitor Apollo 11 all the way to the Moon.

Faking a Moon landing would've been far more difficult than actually doing it, especially with '60s tech. The dreaded "CGI" as all the hoax proponents like to say, didn't even exist then, and wouldn't for a long time.

I vaguely remembered something about independent confirmation of Apollo 11 signals from the surface of the Moon. Bochum Observatory in West Germany, using their 20m dish, recorded audio and even TV transmissions from Apollo 11 on the surface. UK, and Italian observatories did as well.

And most amazing of all, Larry Basinger, a radio technician for a radio station in Kentucky and big Ham radio enthusiast built his own homemade antenna, *out of chicken wire* with wood framing (it was YUGE), and recorded voice transmissions from Apollo 11.

His recordings were identical to the other independents. Same transmission. And it did not include the ground to Moon transmissions. They were just getting the Moon to ground transmissions.

Posted by: SciVo at June 11, 2026 03:04 AM (Sy6m/)

413 >> So why is it such a meme?

The answer is because the makers of those memes and all that hoax stuff out there are a bunch of idiots (or Dunning-Kruger poster children) who don't know what they're talking about. Then throw in the real lunatics, like the flat-earthers, and you Katy bar the door.

Another reason is it's been so long. Your typical less than 29 year old of today knows very little about Apollo. When I was a little kid, I was fascinated by it all, and had the details (such as young kid could process) burned in my brain. And it's still there. I knew the Saturn V rocket, all the stages and parts of the Apollo spacecraft by heart.

Some of these idiots have no idea how all that was put together and worked.

The genesis of the Moon Hoax stuff was from a 1974 self-published book by a character named Bill Kaysing, titled "We never went to the Moon". He gained some purchase because he was a former employee of Rocketdyne. He wasn't an engineer, or rocket scientist, or anything related, but a technical writer with an English degree.

And then a character named Bart Sibrel (who got punched in the face by Buzz Aldrin) took up the torch. And, with the internet driven flat earth kookery, they went wild with all that.
