A Sudanese man arrested over a knife attack in Belfast on Monday is understood to have been granted leave to remain in Northern Ireland, the police have said. The man, initially believed by police to be Somali but later confirmed as Sudanese, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after officers were called to Kinnaird Avenue at about 10.30pm on Monday. Video of the attack appeared to show a man with a knife holding another man down on the ground, before bystanders intervened. One of them hit the attacker over the head with a hurling stick. The victim, who is in his forties, had "significant" eye injuries, Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson said.
Northern Ireland remains part of the UK so this is once again all due to Two-Tier Queer Keir and the British Islamo-Labour establishment.
Asked about the suspect's immigration status, Henderson said: "My understanding is that the individual came into Northern Ireland from Dublin, moving up, and then was granted leave to remain."

Police are not seeking anyone else over the attack and at this stage is not deemed terror-related, Henderson said.

He said his status when crossing the Irish border was still to be determined but that "lawyers will debate the legal status of this individual for weeks, months and even years to come".

Boutcher accused "faceless" people online who know nothing of Northern Ireland of causing "toxic" discourse that was inciting violence. In London, the Conservatives have demanded "total transparency" on the immigration status of the suspect. Chris Philp, the shadow home secretary, said: "Last night's brutal attempted beheading in Belfast is appalling. The government must ensure full details about the suspect's nationality and immigration status are released. Total transparency is required. "If it turns out this man is an illegal immigrant it would provide further evidence that the government's lack of border control is endangering the public." Hilary Benn, the Northern Ireland secretary, would not comment on the suspect's immigration status. He appealed for calm, adding it was "innocent people who suffer" when political leaders failed to reduce tensions.
He also paid tribute to the bystanders who intervened to pull the assailant away, saying they represented "the very best of humanity".I'm sure he's very happy about this. He got civilians to do the police's job for them. The police are too busy harassing people over tweets.
... Anti-immigration protesters have sought to capitalise on the incident by calling for a mass protest in Belfast on Tuesday evening. An online message of unknown origin has widely circulated on social media calling for men over 18 to arrive wearing dark clothing and to be "prepared to fight or be arrested". A version of the post circulating on X called for "road closures and businesses to close in protest over the migrant invasion of Northern Ireland". Politicians in Northern Ireland warned that the incident may be hijacked by far-right activists.

A rational jury could agree with you. It's actually hard to get a "Murder One" conviction unless it's a contract hit, the killer waits in ambush for his victim, or the facts leave no doubt the killer wanted the victim dead.
Whenever there is some evidence -- even a little -- that suggests the killer might not have specific intent to kill, it's usually a manslaughter conviction.

Texas statute is a bit harder on murderers.

Basically, it reminds me of a case where a guy upset at his neighbors for loud partying for months, decides to take a body cam, pistol, and confront the partiers. He kills one person and claims self defense. Jury ruled for murder because the person set up the conditions where he thought someone would confront him so he could reply with lethal force.

Yes, one step below "Murder One" could be 2nd Degree Murder. It all depends on how the state defines the relative mental states.
In some states, there could be a dozen different "levels" of homicide, from 1D murder, to 2D murder, to 3D murder, to 1D manslaughter, all the way down to negligent homicide.
But it appears the prosecution in this specific case included a "manslaughter" charge, and not a "murder 2" charge. I don't know why they did that as opposed to 2D murder (assuming it's available).
