I enjoy Gérôme's topics and style: realistic, detailed, and colorful. This one is a good example. The clothing seems appropriate to the time and place, each face is individual which reminds me of Rembrandt's group paintings, and his use of light to set a mood and atmosphere helps make the painting.
FWIW, the casting activity is correct, the tools are as well, even the man on the right cutting away the sprue left from the mold. I'm impressed. Either Gérôme knew the process or he copied it exactly while painting. Check out his Wiki page. Plenty of female nudes. His landscapes are lovely. And he has a sense of humor. Two paintings called The Tryst, one from the outside with a man looking in and one with the woman looking out from the interior. Posted by: JTB at June 08, 2026 09:51 AM (yTvNw) 82

Jean-Léon Gérôme Looks familiar. No doubt an excellent painter but he had a huge body of work that also included many sculptures. Musée d'Orsay houses some of his celebrated bronzes. Dahesh Museum of Art details his famous sculptural process. Wikipedia: In part, "Despite charges that the Orientalizing paintings of Gérôme (and others) exploited and indulged in stereotypes of Arab and Muslim cultures, there is now "a high level of interest in collecting Gérôme's art in the Middle East," as evinced by high prices paid at auction for his work by the Qatar Museums Authority in Doha.[45] "They want to take it back and have it for themselves," says art historian Emily M. Weeks.[46]" Would pass hanging but interesting lesson. Thanks. Posted by: L - No nic, another fine day at June 08, 2026 09:59 AM (NFX2v) 92

Fascinating passage from a book by an RC bishop, discussing Wagner's opera Tristan und Isolde: 1/2 "When the two reunite in Act Two, their euphoric singing leaves us in no doubt: they are quite out of their minds. Later in the same act, wileful bliss reveals its true face as perversion, spelt out in Wagner’s libretto. The music is gorgeous. The words are lovely, too. Charmed, we must really pay attention to note the sickness of erotic inebriation in which there is no trace of romance. Tristan and Isolde seek, not communion, but possession. Possession, they see, can only become final in death." Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at June 08, 2026 10:28 AM (O0L8i) Posted by: Count de Monet at June 08, 2026 10:28 AM (wVcYX) 157

2/2 "The Liebestod motif makes its first appearance in an effusion of Tristan’s, aspiring to be ‘ever one’ with Isolde, yet to be ‘nameless’, deprived of personhood, offered up to a divinized Love which uncannily resembles ancient Moloch, who consumed his children. When Isolde develops the theme at the end of the opera, the music’s sublimity, cutting right through us, can make us forget that she is, in fact, throwing herself dying into the arms of a corpse. Such is the fulfilment of this kind of eros." Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at June 08, 2026 10:28 AM (O0L8i) 159

I watched Kristen Welker harass President Trump on Meet the Nation.
I am confused about what is supposed to happen in an interview. I, naively, that the role of interviewer was to ask well crafted questions and let the interviewed answer, thus building an organic narrative. Apparently that is an old fashioned notion. Modern interviewers don't really ask questions, rather they hurl accusations, score left-wing propaganda points, hiss at and interrupt the interviewed non-stop, and when the interviewed walks out stare at the camera in wide-eyed amazement that happened. Plus she has scary crazy eyes when she gets aroused on camera. Posted by: Alteria Pilgram - My President has convicitions at June 08, 2026 10:34 AM (glnUu) 175

You a Wagner fan, Hadrian? Posted by: Bulg at June 08, 2026 10:30 AM (77rzZ) _____________ Depends on what. The music is sublime, extraordinary. Unfortunately, it is put in service of Wagner's characters, interchangeable gasbags venting the composer's dorm-room bong-hit philosophy in the libretto. Verdi is inferior musically, but we bleed and cry with his all-too-human characters. In Wagner, we're all secretly relieved when they die and finally shut up. SEATTLE MAYOR CRIES as Largest Bagel Franchise OFFICIALLY Shuts Down For Good!
After 25 years and serving over 7 million bagels, Blazing Bagels — Seattle’s iconic local chain with 5 locations — has collapsed. Employees were stunned when they received a sudden email Thursday night: effective immediately, all locations closed, no warning, no severance. The family business survived recessions and a pandemic, but couldn’t survive Seattle’s crushing $21.30 minimum wage, skyrocketing taxes, and anti-business policies. With downtown office vacancy at a record 35.6%, more restaurants are shuttering while Mayor Katie Wilson responds to fleeing businesses with one word: “Bye.” Hardworking employees are now jobless, and communities are losing beloved institutions. Is this the final warning for Seattle's economy? Bwahahahahahahaha!!! Posted by: rickb223 at June 08, 2026 10:47 AM (lwhHh) 217

Every Republican needs to memorize a version of this and repeat it until the Dems stop asking:
"In 2000, when the Democrats broke decades of precedent, and began declaring every election they lost as fraudulent, Republicans in FL gave anyone and everyone access to the ballots to look for themselves. Every major news organization that examined the ballots saw Bush legitimately won. Full transparency for everyone. 20 years later, not one single Democrat jurisdiction allowed any independent examination of their ballots. Not one. So, it's not a question of whether Joe Biden won, it's a question of whether the election was ever legitimate in the first place. Prove that and I'll answer whether Joe Biden won." If Trump wants to do something that'll (maybe) resuscitate his chances for a 'pub victory in both Houses in the coming election, he'll make Iran into a veritable mound of (ahem) 'nuclear dust' and (hopefully) restrain himself from putting boots on the ground. We don't need a repeat of Bagram or 'Nam … let's just kill the bastards and come home with as few losses as possible. Right now, Trump's pissing away whatever remaining good will exists in the public - and higher prices for gas and food are NOT gonna make him look any better. Just sayin' …
