Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

Meet The PetMorons

dini od.png

Hi KT:

FYI I sometimes comment on Ace of Spades as Geoff Shotts.

Anyway, here is Dini, enjoying the shade.

She just turned 11 and is a Lab/Basset mix. Super sweet, loves kids. She's not as spry as she used to be, but still loves walks and trips to the local creek.

Thank you

Awww, love Dini. She looks like a wonderful dog.

We have heard rumors of a couple of new pets for which we have not received photos. In the meantime, here's another photo of Saijo:

Saijo is loved.

Hey Katy,

Just thought the horde would appreciate my garden friend this morning. It is a screech owl, we get a pair that nests here every year. I have a lot of water about, bird baths and a fountain and a fish pond. I think they appreciate the water. I got pretty close to him before I even noticed him. He was right where I turn on the water. Made my day.

Weekreekfarmgirl

That's a bold owl - out so near to you during daylight hours! Such a great surprise to find him looking at you!

Greetings lovers of all things pets and pet adjacent,

Just a few pics from over the last few weeks or so showcasing why I absolutely love living in the country.  Featured are the deer who have slowly started trusting us enough to come within 25 yards of the house.  Of course it probably helps putting out some snacks for them now and again.  Our two Peacocks, the male is the one with the bright turquoise neck, a few wild turkey's and a little frog who has decided to make his home under our evening coffee table.

Love seeing all the contributions to The Pet Thread and look forward to it every week.

10 Hey guys,

I love the deer pictures.

We have owls in our trees. No idea what kind as we only hear them, never see them. I have only seen an owl once and that was back around 2006-2009.

I have done a small update on our cats. Some cute pictures included.

11 In any case! The furry thugs here at Casa Wolfus are well. Big black Stirling was sleeping with me just now. He passed his fourth anniversary of living with me on Thursday. He got some kitty treats, the semi-liquid "squeeze out of a tube" brand -- tuna and anchovy, I think -- and a new paper bag to play with.

Little gray Dagny sits most days in her personal sauna, the bedroom window, which gets sun from about 1 to 6 pm every day right now. She's still somewhat aloof with me, but climbs up to the sofa arm next to Miss Linda every so often now for petting -- and, we suspect, for combing. She seems to like the sensation of having the teeth pull up from the roots of her thick fur.

12 Reef was odd today. Just insane when we first got up, frantic (more than normal zoomies) was insane outside. Whining constantly. Then like a flipped switch, he went completely silent and was calm and restrained. Very loving all of a sudden.

I sometimes wonder if the dog is just insane or can see dead people.

Ill allow it and then some. This is the end of three weeks straight without a day off and it will at least be one more.

Kaylee the Calico Kitty Cat (the cutest little cat of them) all always responds when I ask her that question.

If I ask her if she wants food or breakfast or dinner, she just looks at me.

If I ask her if she wants a treat, she emphatically meows, "Yes." (and then I give her some, of course)

I can never spot the little devils in their habitats at Petco. I'm expecting them to move like hamsters or rats, but they sit there utterly still like tiny rocks. Suddenly they shift a fraction, and I see the movement. "There they are!"

Speaking of hamsters, I saw a golden brown one for sale at Petco this week. It was almost the same toasted brown color as the "golden Syrian" hamsters I had as a boy, with white undersides and dark gray ears.

21 People don't believe me (though I'm sure some of you recall) when I say that Woolworth's downtown used to sell pets in the early '60s: hamsters, white mice, turtles, mynah birds and parakeets, and -- for a time -- baby alligators. I was never tempted by them, thank goodness. And there used to be a pet store in the Quarter on Dauphine St., on a corner so that people could peer into the windows on two sides. They sold kittens and puppies as well as small pets. The place was clean and well kept.

There was another shop nearby on Burgundy which had a parrot -- maybe as the shopkeeper's pet, maybe for sale. He made me a little nervous when I was young, with the way he fixed me with that reptilian eye and moved back and forth along his perch.

22 We live in the country and enjoy the deer as well but they do require some accommodations. We are in the middle of fawn season and we have to be mindful when we let our dog out of the fenced part of the yard. We've got two enormous live oaks on either side of our front yard. Each one has a landscape island around it where the deer love to park their fawns while feeding nearby. They fawns are invisible and you (or your dog) can almost step on them without seeing them.

If humans or dogs get too close to the hidden fawn the mom deer will suddenly pop up out of nowhere and can be very threatening. They can do a lot of damage with their hooves. We have had to make a hasty retreat with the dog a couple of times this year.

Dagny is practically mute unless you disturb her seriously. She just follows me into the kitchen and looks up at me with that beseeching stare. About the only time Stirling chirps is for water; he jumps up on the bathroom or the kitchen counter and gives little piteous cries. You'd think he just crossed the desert on a horse with no name. They have their fountain, and I see Dagny use it, but Stirling rarely does.

27 About the only wildlife I see here are opossums, not often, and now and then a wading bird, a small storklike species, that must wander in from the grass-lined canal a couple of blocks away. There used to be a pair that stalked around the main street of the complex, and then one day there was only one. A male who'd lost his mate, perhaps.

What was that OTC medicine that used to have an animated owl as its spokesbird? Oh, yes: "Be wise, all, take Xyzal!" I imagine an advertising copywriter wrestling with an ad campaign to make a weirdly-named allergy medicine memorable, tossing and turning . . . until one night, possibly baked himself, he came up with the rhyme "wise all/Xyzal."

For all I know our lousy tap water has salt, and maybe other salts I don't want to know about. I think it's the running water that attracts my two. Dagny likes her morning session with the tap, too, as I brush my teeth.

Leftover wild instincts. Cats don't have a scavenger's constitution like dogs do, so they don't like to drink standing/stagnant water.

The late big black Wolf would not go near the fountain; his brother Chekov drank from it, but he preferred his bowl (refreshed twice a day at their meals), and the tap water, of course. My previous cats were fine with their fresh water arriving in bowls.

43 My roly-poly cat Scout and I have developed a routine in the past week or so that I hope she enjoys as much as I do. She can't quite make the leap to my lap when I'm at the computer. Last week as she sat with accusing eyes, I said, "Do you want to get up? Give me the bat signal."

Not sure why she decided that meant pushing her head against my leg, but I took it as so and picked her up for a cuddle.

It was an instant routine. She sits. I ask her for the bat signal. She thinks it over and pushes her head against me. I pick her up. Yum.
