Howdy Hordelings! Welcome to the Sunday night ONT. First one of June 2026. Open thread, as always. Fashion and music, as always. What's on YOUR mind tonight?

Shorts Season, Served with Sass: How to Make Them Look Expensively Polished in 2026
I’m not a shorts girl. I own exactly two pairs: my beloved cut-off Levi’s 501s (great for beach days, questionable everywhere else) and one tailored olive green pair that occasionally sees daylight. I gravitate to skirts and dresses, but sometimes you just need something that doesn’t involve wrestling with wind.
These are the exact looks I would put together for myself. Elevated, flattering, and full of personality so I actually feel excited to wear shorts instead of defaulting to a dress.
The good news? Shorts can look polished, and even a little sexy, when styled right. Let’s prove it with three looks that lean into the best of Ralph Lauren, Ted Baker, and Dolce & Gabbana drama.

Look 1: Ralph Lauren Chic (The “Luxury on Vacation” Vibe)

IMG_1925-rr.jpg

This look is pure effortless elegance. Think Piper in the Italian countryside. Monochromatic linen blends, clean lines, and the most forgiving pleats you’ll ever meet. These shorts are strategically designed so the pleats sit in all the right places instead of creating new ones. 😉
• Pleated Linen Blend Twill Shorts by Lauren Ralph Lauren in Light Agave Green
• Twist Front Sleeveless Top by Lauren Ralph Lauren in Light Agave Green
• Lina Wedge Sandal by Reformation in Rum Leather
• Romy Straw Bucket Bag by Tory Burch (large)
• The Vivienne 59mm Gradient Round Sunglasses by Ralph Lauren
Slip this on and suddenly you’re the woman who “just threw this together” while secretly looking like you have a summer house in Tuscany.

Look 2: Ted Baker Preppy (Brunch-to-Errands Queen Energy)

IMG_1926-rr.jpg

Sunshine in clothing form. This combo brings playful British preppy meets summer ease. The perfect mix of textures feels rich without trying too hard. Cotton-blend shorts keep things crisp, the ruffle-trim knit adds softness, and those sky-blue patent slides? Chef’s kiss. Retro sunnies seal the polished-but-fun deal.
• Hana Plaid Cotton Blend Shorts by Ted Baker in Camellia Rose
• Elisa Rib Ruffle Trim Sweater by Ted Baker in Vanilla Ice
• Fina Slide Sandal by Bruno Magli in Sky Blue Patent
• 50mm Oval Sunglasses by Mia Mia
• Paddington Leather Shoulder Bag by Chloé in Cloudy Cream (small)
Wear this and you’ll feel like the main character running around town looking annoyingly cute.

Look 3: Dolce & Gabbana Luxe (Main Character Energy, Activated)

IMG_1928-rr.jpg

When you want shorts to scream “I’m expensive and I know it.” Matching Majolica prints, a flirty bustier, and embroidered mules make every step feel like a runway moment. Heels + shorts = instant leg-lengthening sorcery.
• Majolica Print Mat Bermuda Shorts by Dolce & Gabbana
• Majolica Print Charmeuse Bustier Top by Dolce & Gabbana
• Majolica Print brocade mules with embroidery by Dolce & Gabbana
• DG Sunglasses
This look is confident, feminine, and just the right amount of extra.
Shorts don’t have to feel like giving up on style, they can be your secret weapon for warm-weather polish. Whether you’re channeling Ralph Lauren ease, Ted Baker charm, or D&G drama, the key is tailoring, texture play, and confidence.
Which of these three looks is making you want to give shorts another chance? ☀️

Thanks, Piper!

13 First of all Rat, you never let on how much you like a girl. "Oh, Debbie. Hi." Two, you always call the shots. "Kiss me. You won't regret it." Now three, act like wherever you are, that's the place to be. "Isn't this great?" Four, when ordering food, you find out what she wants, then order for the both of you. It's a classy move. "Now, the lady will have the linguini and white clam sauce, and a Coke with no ice." And five, now this is the most important, Rat. When it comes down to making out, whenever possible, put on side one of Led Zeppelin IV.

Chip Monck was the guy making announcements from the stage during Woodstock 1969. For a year after the concert, he was repeatedly receiving death threats. The cops eventually tracked down the fellow doing it. Turns out it was the guy who had been trying to sell the brown acid.

56 Well, I took a Sunday afternoon nap and missed the Gun Thread. I wanted to share that I did some cursory research on chamberings favored in the grim lands of our conquered forebears, and while English cops don't normally carry, what guns they have in their HQ are all the familiar NATO ones: 9mm handguns, 5.56mm carbines, 7.62mm sniper rifles (really?), and 12-gauge shotguns (nice Imperial there).

The point of this exercise was to find out what kind of ammo might be readily available at gunpoint, if we were to airdrop crates of Liberty Starter Kits with just a single case of Freedom Seeds per Pew Pew. AI refused, unsurprisingly, to tell me what kind of guns were in mosque armories; the closest I could get was that the firearms most commonly captured being smuggled were AK-47s, and the ones most commonly confiscated off being carried by criminals were 9mm pistols.

Other commenters have pointed out that our kin across the pond don't have any practice or experience with guns. So, with cops and criminals alike settling on 9mm, and with discomfort and unfamiliarity being an issue, I think Pistol-Caliber Carbines are the way to go. And several companies make them for Glock magazines.

62 I was just looking at the latest IERS data for the earth's rotation. I got fascinated by a little unexpected speed-up starting around 2020.

That appears to have settled down, and we're back to normal (mean solar day yearly average back to a smidge over 24 hours, rather a smidge less). If that little speed-up had kept up, we'd have needed a negative leap second by around 2029 - 2030.

No need to worry about that for now, although it will be a while before a normal positive leap second is needed again.

71 The reason why 7.62x51mm sniper rifles are a (really?) is because that's a relatively light cartridge suitable for battle rifles. Indeed, the .30-06 Springfield (or 7.62x63mm), "the cartridge that won two World Wars," was a battle rifle chambering in its day, with even water-cooled BARs. So if you're going to make a 30-caliber sniper rifle, at least go x63mm for goodness' sake.

And 12-gauge is an Imperial because of math. Gauge is inverse pounder. If a cannon has a bore where a lead sphere of that diameter would weigh 12 pounds, then it's a 12-pounder. Gauge is the inverse, for how many spheres of that diameter it would take to make 1 pound, which is why a 10-gauge is bigger than a 12-gauge is bigger than a 20-gauge. A 12-gauge shotgun is a 1/12th pounder cannon.

72 I know that place in the top photo. It's a creepy little island called "Sepia". Time moves differently there as most of the men still wear hats, and the women never wear skirts above the knee. Everyone still smokes, doctors make housecalls, and there's this guy wearing a brimmed cap that delivers glass bottles of milk.

I was there for a week's vacation, and for some reason I had the urge to grow a pencil think moustache. This one guy kept calling me a "Dick". Turns out he thought I was a detective. And, there was a rather embarrassing occurrence when I mixed up the word "mug" in ordering a beer, and the bartended punched some poor guy in the face.

122 22 Spencer Pratt (R) has dropped to 3rd place in the L.A. mayor's race tonight, due to another mail-in ballot drop."

I'll repeat something I wrote this morning - I think it's better for us in the long run that it happen this way. First, you know that they were going to steal it from him in November; no realistic person can have any doubt about that. But they would have had time to prepare, and that would have been semi-plausible 51-49 Bass win and nobody would have known for sure how much cheating this was.

But this way, they are so bold as to steal blatantly, right out in the open, in about the most ridiculous way possible. Why? Because they can - but also everyone in the country can see it out in the open, and there is no doubt that California elections are absolutely corrupt, and will remain corrupt until some outside force steps in to clean them up. Now what shape that cleanup will take is up for debate - I have some ideas, as do you - but there can no longer be any doubt at all that it is absolutely necessary, and that the constitutional rights of all Californians are being infringed until that happens.

Gorgeous photo on top! Wonder if the photographer used a lens. I have a former nursing school friend who is also a professional landscape photographer. I have several of her prints and one is of aspen at first snowfall. The aspen are pink vs yellow and she used an infrared lens (I think).

Home By the Sea by Genesis brings back good memories from 40yrs ago. Moving from the Intermountain West to the Atlantic coast of FL. Eldest son at 2.5yrs knew the words to this song. Raised our boys on rock and roll. He's the professional musician (now engineer to make a living). Now back where we belong in West.

Wonderful time and fairly good trip driving 8hrs/day til MS, where we spent 3 wks. Then another 2 day drive to the coast. We also had an 8wk old boy, which made for excitement in my "milking stall" of the Datsun, as my brother called it when I staggered out. Baby had a growth spurt on the trip and gained about 2#.

I am in a better mood tonight & not wanting to kill anyone (yet). Baby girl doing well from her delayed antibiotic. I just pray she stays healthy & her kidneys will be fine for the routine ultrasound next month.

Have a wonderful evening.

In college, I understood it, even indulged in it. As i got older though you realize that the differences are so fundamental that having a different opinion means a fundamental difference on how you see everything.

The other point is: a lot of kids got married in college or right after. So they may not have come into that realization until it was too late and they were bound by vows and blood (kids.)

Posted by: Aetius451AD work phone at June 07, 2026 11:20 PM (zZu0s)

193 There are thousands, tens of thousands of wonderful people in CA. If you go outside the larger cities, they are farmers, business owners, retirees, etc, who just want to be left alone. I know some and have met many more.

I tell my kids (who are by means young) often that the political problems in the US extend to each state, conservative or liberal, between the large cities and the rest of the state. Possibly the very small states are exceptions.

Here in OK, where Trump won all 77 counties, there are lots of liberals loose in the cities and are often elected to city councils and especially school boards!

I think it's weird as well. Because we knew exactly what we were getting when we married. First son was named after we were engaged and four years before his birth; discussions of God, beliefs, and politics as well as the fun stuff and romance.

I don't get a surprise after the vows. Or trying to change the other person (never works).

In my opinion I think people settle, figuring they can't do better, watching their friends and family marry. My neurotic SIL (not the nun who is OCD) did this. SHE asked the guy to marry, the only guy she ever dated. I was horrified.

Miserable marriage and divorce after the girls were in HS. They are screwed up as well. She's still neurotic but now also bitter and a Karen.

Virginia is going through this now. This is what the majority of the people in Virginia want. I live in a place that is about 78% Dem. People talk about the commonwealth's attorney here like the people are shocked that they have a Soros DA who wants to let the illegals go.

No. He ran on that, expressly. And he got 78% of the vote the first time, and same amount on re-election.

Yeah, Soros and power brokers but the people here are nuts and they would sooner get stabbed at the bus stop (more accurately someone else get stabbed) than make some brown person feel any discomfort.

235 175 Have a good friend who lived in Palmdale with his fairly liberal schoolteacher wife. He wanted to move out of the state for a couple of decades and they finally did. All the way to Prescott, AZ! He loves it there and I don't think she does.
Posted by: LRob in OK at June 07, 2026 11:13 PM (Jr+re)

I remember the Billie Jack movies used Prescott as a backdrop. I recall the towns people were very angry about being portrayed as a bunch of small minded bigots. Or was it they were mad at not being portrayed as bigoted enough? Well you can never make everybody happy I guess. I still think the ending of the trial movie was one of the stupidest movie endings I've ever seen.

Fun fact: Prescott is pronounced as rhyming with Biscuit

Posted by: LRob in OK at June 07, 2026 11:21 PM (Jr+re)

Yep. And your school system is beholden to teacher’s unions (which should be 100% illegal), I’m afraid. OK also has a state income tax. Shame y’all can’t get rid of that.

Never forget (this applies everywhere, even here in TX - especially here in TX) that the dumbasses that get to federal offices like Rep and Senator start out getting voted into school boards, county office, city office, etc. Which means vigilance is required on those levels.

Posted by: Cow Demon at June 07, 2026 11:53 PM (T6aVk)

240 But this way, they are so bold as to steal blatantly, right out in the open, in about the most ridiculous way possible.

I think the reason why things never got really bad here in S.F. in 2020 is that in a city of 49 sq miles, not all of which is land, our super rich can't hide behind barricaded and gated communities. If the SRHTF, they're fucked. So they tolerate some tomfoolery in the lowlands of Market Street, but don't they dare think of moving that shit even 2 miles north. I don't want fillers or Botox or nuthin.

I had half of my face carved on for a basal cell that looked like a clogged pore near my nostril. Plastic surgeon put two scars (can't see them but horror at the time) to my dimple near my mouth to yank up skin to cover the whole from MOH's. Then CO2 laser to that once healed, and, whoa Nelly that was wild to itch and hurt at the same time. Gorked out on Benedryl and advil, but it worked.

I kept telling my husband, people pay for their entire face to suffer like this! Some lasers are ok, but the CO2 is harsh. I have to show people the scars now if they ask. I was lucky to get in that afternoon and surgery the next day. Being on drugs blurred the entire ordeal.

I'd have to go through a windshield for plastic surgery or to yank up my eyebrows, etc. Nope!

Six people were injured in a stabbing at New York’s Penn Station Sunday evening, raising security concerns a day before the city is set to host the NBA Finals – with President Donald Trump in attendance.

The attack comes amid heightened security around Madison Square Garden, which lies directly above the busy intercity railroad station, where the New York Knicks are hosting the San Antonio Spurs for Games 3 and 4 on Monday and Wednesday.

Most of the major tech companies are following Elon and moving to Texas, and most other successful companies are relocating around the country. Now everyone knows there’s no hope of it getting better. The last piece of the puzzle needs to be Trump shutting down most federal money going in, and the collapse should be truly epic.

Pretty standard. She repeats the 'no evidence' bullshit. Yadda yadda- which tapper then repeated in his tweet.

The thing is Nurse and Jack are right. You can't run. But no one wants to face the arithmetic these people represent. Things aren't bad enough and people are too comfortable. By the time they are bad enough, chances of success will be worse.

The other problem is: this is almost exactly the same issue Sulla faced. Everything was falling apart. He tried to fix the system and restore it. Bloody prescriptions. Essentially he murdered everyone he suspected. And it did not change a damn thing. Merely doing what he thought needed doing, he also broke the system further. And so Caesar or someone like him was inevitable.

No. It’s happening because there’s a minority of power brokers with a TON of money and influence have bastardized the process. Most Californians are too busy trying to make ends meet and don’t have the wherewithall to fight back. Their votes are invalidated.

If the people of CA didn't want it, why aren't thousands and thousands of people jamming the streets of Sacramento demanding change? Why isn't Sacramento and other CA cities looking like Leipzig, East Berlin, Prague or Bucharest circa the fall of 1989?

Because the people of CA VERY, VERY CHEERFULLY acquiesce in the destruction of their liberty. Until the people of CA do something to show otherwise, I have to assume the worst: that far too many there are in fact unfit to be free and are incapable of self-government.
