Thursday Overnight Open Thread - June 4, 2026 [scampydog]

Battered.jpg

One of those signs where the Moron brain goes a couple of directions. Let's go with the seafood special.

Doof needed the night off - all is well, but short notice. Threw together this ONT "quickie style."

*****

We'll kick things off with a bit of self-awareness. Yes, your host this evening was a dumbass. But only that day. I'd appreciate it if everyone would focus on my...nevermind.

Tractor Woes.jpg

Gabbing while adding antifreeze to the radiator. Which in my defense, is right next to the fuel tank. You can fill in the rest of the story about which tank the antifreeze went into.

What do you have horde? What is your dumbassery moment of the week?

Pretty cool lounge in the basement of a Chicago restaurant, which got the brain thinking about speakeasies, which are basically bars pretending they are not bars. Or, during COVID, a bar with the windows blacked out where you parked two blocks away and snuck in through the kitchen door. Or so I have been told.

chispeakeasy.jpg

Decent collection of modern speakeasies for your perusal.

This Cuban-style speakeasy is located in the basement of the building that previously housed a bank. Whats more, the bar pays homage to the building’s history by transforming the vault—which serves as the entrance—into a lively lounge area. Once you enter through the vault, you’ll need to provide the staff with a password, which changes daily and can be found on the bar’s social media pages. Just be sure to leave your jeans and tank tops at home: Las Floriditas has a strict dress code.

Hit the comments if you have a good speakeasy story.

The Hot Topic of the Week

Behold! The fouled lawnmower plug! Yes, ONT crew, yes. The content you have been demanding. The humble spark plug is basically a miniature lighting machine. Creating tiny little explosions and surviving.

fouled plug.jpg

History of the spark plug? I thought you'd never ask. A good aggregation of charts and info at the link.

This journey from simple copper electrodes to advanced multi-ground platinum-iridium designs reflects broader changes in engine technology, materials science, and performance demands. Understanding spark plug evolution reveals how seemingly small components drive major efficiency and performance improvements across all vehicles.

Wearing This Costume Does Not Enable You To Fly

Warning labels? Sure. Somewhere, there is a person who inspired each of these warning labels. May we all be lucky enough to never meet them.

warning dummy.jpg

Here is the big list of Warning Labels. Inspired by the patient zero folk.

ONT Music. A theme without Doof! Blasphemy? Perhaps.

For those who have no time for such riddles and guessing games. Evening Music Theme can be found at the link.

A bit of light reading on Cleisthenes. Widely credited as the Father of Athenian Democracy.

Under this new and radical idea, the power and responsibility of decision-making were entrusted to the hands of the Athenian citizens themselves rather than a select few. This was done in complete opposition to the norm up to that particular time, which had it that the principle of power belonged to a select “excellent” few, otherwise also referred to as aristocrats (“aristokrates”.

Those well read on the topic, drop some knowledge in the comments.

25 I posted this at the end of the last post as I am always late to everything. However I wanted you all to know:

In my rampaging today, chronic fatigue and stress for six weeks of stuff happening to see if I crack (I don't), I forgot to mention my SIL's new puppy in MS.

She raises these pups to be lapdogs and rather neurotic ones that bark a lot (and bite). Why, living on a farm with a lake, they don't get a rescue or a lab I do not know. She wants this exotic breed who looks like a racoon to me. This was from photos of her carrying the dog in a pouch thing. Which made us all laugh as we are evil people. The puppy looked mad.

Well. The dog is now in training somewhere out of state. I guess in two weeks the 8wk old pup went loco with her and caused fights and angst. She had a trainer come out and observe the dog and agreed he was a bit much (bit part of a brick off of something).

My DIL found an 18 page manual near the dog toys and took a photo. Son and I of course laughed as the large print is the breeder advice (wacko) and the small print is SIL's.

We have not met the dog yet and hope the training is going well til the end of the month.

37 One summer when I was definitely old enough to know better I came home from Taco Bell and decided I needed to drain the lawnmower of last summer's gas. I looked around for a convenient container and sure - my large Taco Bell soda cup. Made of cheap plastic.

So a buddy comes over an hour later and sees me repeatedly dousing my forearm with salad dressing in the sink and scraping.

"What the eff are you doing?"

"Accidentally made some napalm. Stuck to my arm. I figured oil and vinegar would help separate it from my skin and it seems to be working."

"You made NAPALM?"

"Accidentally."

I have... never lived that down. But I don't pour gasoline into non-rated plastics anymore.

45 The Karmelo Anthony jury has been selected, & it's all white.

The prosecutor struck 3 black venireme, & those strikes survived defense Batson challenges. The trial judge ruled that the prosecutor had stated a race neutral reason for each of these strike, i.e., that all 3 of them were educators.

Historically, & supposedly stilll today, peremptory strikes are given to both sides & can be used without stating a reason.

Batson v. KY changed that, to the extent that the strikes must now be race neutral. That is the only limitation.

It's time for a million people to plan a "Pratt Vacation Weekend" in LA for the November vote. Fly or drive, register to vote without showing ID because that's the way they do it in Cali, get a ballot and mail it in. Fly or drive home.

Legality or legitimacy for a blue state election has left the building long ago. They are openly stealing elections by laughing at us who still give a damn. The Democrats would scream at it. Even more reason to do it. There are about 5.9 million registered voters in LA. Let's get Pratt 6 or 7 million votes. Out-corrupt the corruption. It would be beautiful. And fun!

If my 9mo old granddaughter had kidney issues from an untreated (for 2 days post urine test and culture) UTI, can a grandmother sue the pediatrician?

It is protocol for infants to have a renal ultrasound 2wks after the completion of the antibiotic in early July.

I, while brilliant, am merely a RN with a bachelor's degree in nursing... and I could see what this nitwit who teaches at the university med school did not. My DIL sent me the labs via text and I questioned her care stat. Fortunately for this MD our girl is both darling and healthy and turned the corner yesterday WHEN THE PRELIMINARY culture would have shown growth.

Rampage and enraged don't cut what I was this morning for two days wasted.

This baby had a mild UTI. It had better be so mild it did not reach her kidneys while you dithered around.

I have never sued anyone in my life but I will be even more enraged than this morning. It is not a pretty thing to have an internal rampage. I am sure it did nothing at all for my skin, yet I don't get zits anymore.

My husband, who is not a lawyer, said I can't sue. I will still try if the test is not normal for my sweetie.

I had a doctor appointment Tuesday morning. Took my Kindle e-reader with me. Tuesday afternoon I am home and I look for the Kindle. It is not in the house. I search the interior of the car and don't see it. I call the doctor's office and they don't have it.

I figure it is gone forever, so I log onto Amazon, remotely delete all the content off it, then report it lost/stolen so nobody can use it to download Minotaur Romance novels.

Today, Thursday, I wheel my trash bin to the curb. I turn around and see my Kindle trapped between the windshield and the folding interior sunshade. I must have set it on the dash while I fiddled with the sunshade and then scooped it up when I put up the shade.

I unlocked it at Amazon and now I'm slowly reloading it. It appears to be undamaged from two afternoons of cooking in the sun.

When we first moved to FL and in a rental house, my 2yr old son got really bad diarrhea and I had a newborn baby. Husband at his new job and why we moved. No phone or pediatrician. So I left the baby asleep in a safe playpen and went next door to strangers (old couple who collected those weird German beer steins of men's heads). Locked the door. They let me use the phone and the toddler did not harf in their house.

Meanwhile, I'd locked myself out of the house as I forgot the key due to the toddler's diarrhea.

We could see the baby from a window asleep and I started feeling hormonal and freaked out. The neighbor man took the door off the hinges, which sort of told me that was not safe, but I was inside and my husband came home to the chaos.

I always thought Lego was a crappy toy. Cheap plastic shit. Erector and Meccano were the shiznit. Real metal, real nuts and bolts.

239 Borgnine wrote a funny, interesting autobiography that you can read in an hour and 45 minutes or so.

I didn't know that his native language was Italian before I read it.

240 Battered Men's Shelter is a restaurant for the Cannibalism community. It's best known for its fish battered male fingers.

I haven't seen a review from Cannibalism Bob, so I can't recommend it myself.

241 I define myself as a lurker as I rarely post, rather I live vicariously through my brother, Kreb’s, posts. He’s the talkative one in the family. In high school, as I was a year behind him, I consistently heard from teachers: “So your Kreb’s sister.” Could never live up to whatever that meant.

Hey I got an idea if you don’t mind asking management for me. Ok here it is, the Rolling Stones special, shattered, in tatters, shadoobie.

Basically hash browns, but with more shadoobie.

246 Oh, for all of our Morons that learned their house maintenance while watching Tool Time, how many yards of electrical black tape is necessary to ensafeafy a junction of two old lamp cords used as conductors to power a wall switch while inside a wall NOT enclosed in a work box? Baseball sized amount? Softball?

I wish I had known they were worth so much because the atheist nephew-in-law had them in his coffin at the weird atheist funeral last fall.

I don't think they got cremated with him. But I did learn that there are rent-a-coffins for cremations, which grossed me out further.

I will be cremated someday and no one is going to put me in a rental coffin for observation.

A tasteful urn in a drawer to share the drawer with my husband's urn is the plan. I hope not soon, however, considering the past six weeks I need to be on guard.
