Re Herding:
While in Ireland and bumming around with our Priest in the backcountry, we came upon numerous herds of sheep. He'd stand there and whistle dog herding directions to the sheep and would drive them right, left, towards us, etc. even without a dog present. I honestly didn't think the sheep were that smart. I was never fond of Clint's Every Which Way But Loose films. They seemed kind of underbrained -- which was probably the audience they were aimed at.
On the other hand I liked Bronco Billy with its hopeful message that you can be whatever you want to be. In medical news, I had my CT Scan this morning, then saw the oncology surgeon this afternoon.
Everything looks good/stable - no new tumors, and the ones that are there have pretty much stayed the same or shrunk ever so slightly (so much so that it could just be user interpretation). No metastises seen, so that is good, too. Apparently I CAN stay on this protocol more than 6 months at a time, so we are going to continue to do fills with the medication, alternating with "placebo" fills every other 2 weeks as before. I will say that the doctor seemed QUITE pleased with my progress; I am not sure that when he first saw me 20 months ago that he thought that I would still be kickin' it all these months later. I have apparently responded EXTREMELY well to these protocols. Honestly, it's just luck of the draw - many others have been on these same meds and not had good results. Those prayers are working, folks! We are extremely grateful for each and every one of them. So good news all around! 😊♥️ Posted by: Teresa in Fort Worth, Texas, AoSHQ's Plucky Wee One - Eat the Cheesecake, Buy the Yarn. at June 01, 2026 08:50 PM (SRRAx) 57

so disappointing. I got a little excited because the plot of that movie is driven by the New Mexico land controversy, which I had studied a little. but a boring movie. (The Mexicans had granted nearly all of New Mexico to a few well-connected businessmen called "impressarios." This grant seemed to be illegal under Mexican law, and anyway, US settlers didn't want to honor it anyway. For years and years the question of who actually owned this land, the settlers (many who'd bought it from prior owners) or these Mexican impressarios (and the people they'd sold it to) raged. I think this controversy was a background political question in the Billy the Kidd "Regulator" feuds, too. Ultimate resolution: The Mexican impressarios owned the land (or the people they'd sold it to) and anyone who'd bought it from anyone else was screwed.) One of my favorite lines in any movie ever is uttered 'In the Line of Fire'.
Booth the assassin talks about a poem that JFK supposedly liked called 'A rendezvous with death' During a phone conversion, Clint East as Frank Horrigan gets very angry with Booth's taunting and yells 'You have a rendezvous with my a**, motherf*cker.' I habitually quote movies in real life instead of actual conversation and I have never been able to find a good context to use that line, especially in our current age of everything is g*y as f*ck. I enjoy hearing about your bucket list adventures too.
Posted by: screaming in digital at June 01, 2026 08:58 PM (0SdQT) We were too tired at the end of each day to post anything from our New York trip! Sorry about that.... Suffice it to say that all 3 of us gals have WONDERFUL memories - I would even like to maybe go back there and spend more time in the Metropolitan Museum. We also had to ditch a couple of planned items, as we just ran out of time! But there are other adventures that Paul wants to be a part of - the grandsons will be out of daycare/preschool for a week in August, so I am hoping that we can escape the Texas heat and see some sights then. Hearbreak Ridge.
Thunderball and Lightfoot. Posted by: ace at June 01, 2026 09:04 PM (1wjle) Heartbreak Ridge is a mixed bag, in my opinion. Eastwood was Eastwood, and the majority of the cast was good. It was the official movie of the Marines in Grenada. But...Mario van Peebles. Holy shit he sucks. Small wonder he faded into Bolivian. Is Grenada considered a war?
Although I guess Heartbreak Ridge could be considered a post war, war movie. Posted by: Aetius451AD work phone at June 01, 2026 09:08 PM (zZu0s) 102

i just tried to watch this war movie because I was interested in the unit

I like women who are easily impressed. I suppose I shouldn't admit that. Posted by: Anon Y. Okay. That's good news. I've only been passing through today. It seemed like it was turning in 'Murderous Rage Monday" with each story. So I'm taking this good news, that's my last memory of the Horde tonight. Everyone have a great night. Posted by: Stateless - He ain't heavy, he's my dog at June 01, 2026 09:13 PM (Sco7b) 108

My favorite Eastwood western is Unforgiven.
He has some other really good ones, but that will always be his best to me. Posted by: SpeakingOf at June 01, 2026 09:17 PM (6ydKt) 111

I don't like that one. As Peter Griffin said, It insists upon itself. Posted by: ace at June 01, 2026 09:20 PM (1wjle) Posted by: SpeakingOf at June 01, 2026 09:20 PM (6ydKt) 113
Unforgiven, imo, is a mixed bag. The last 5 mins MAKE the entire movie, and make it a great one. But I still remember thinking 'this is kind of boring' a couple times for the first 2 hours.

The death of Spock in the "The Wrath of Khan" is an almost exact copy of the death of the blind poet Rhysling in Heinlein's "The Green Hills of Earth".
Tommy Lee Jones death at the end of "Space Cowboys" is an almost exact copy of the death of an old sick man - D. D. Harriman - in Heinlein's "The Man Who Sold the Moon". I called my fellow Heinlein fan brother-in-law and asked if he had seen "Wrath of Khan". He yelled back "They stole it! Green Hills of Earth!" He called me years later, and asked if I had seen "Space Cowboys" yet. I yelled back "D. D. Harriman! They stole the ending!" Posted by: retropox at June 01, 2026 09:24 PM (3E1PV) 116
