Tech News

  • AMD also announced global availability of its 9070 GRE, previously a China-only edition. (Tom's Hardware)

This is essentially 75% of the company's flagship graphics card, the 9070 XT, trimmed from 64 cores and 16GB of RAM to 48 cores and 12GB of RAM.

The only problem is the MSRP was reduced from $599 to $549, which makes it rather the opposite of a good deal.

  • Nvidia is announcing - oh, wait, it just went official - its RTX Spark laptop chip. (Tom's Hardware)

This offers up to 20 Arm CPU cores, coupled with up to 128GB of RAM and an up to RTX 5070-class integrated GPU.

This is the same chip used in Nvidia's DGX Spark AI desktop, which retails for $4699, so don't expect the laptop version to be cheap.

  • Speaking of cheap laptops, Dell's new XPS 13 starts at $699 ($599 for students). (Liliputing)

It uses Intel's low-end Wildcat Lake CPU, but one of the better ones with actually quite acceptable performance. And unlike many competing models it has a screen on par with Apple's MacBook Neo, a 2560x1600 IPS panel covering 100% of DCI-P3 colour and a variable refresh rate from 30 to 120Hz, at a healthy 500 nits brightness.

Basic model has 8GB of RAM (soldered) and 512GB of SSD. I/O consists of two USB-C ports and... That's it, really. Doesn't have the Four Essential Keys either.

  • What does have the Four Essential Keys is Lenovo's new Thinkpad T14 Gen 7. (Notebook Check)

It comes with a 6 or 8 core Ryzen processor with Radeon 840M or 860M graphics respectively - good if not great - the aforementioned keys which while not in my preferred layout are all present and unshared, and expandable memory and storage.

And a 2880x1800 OLED display... With 500 nits brightness and a variable refresh rate from 30 to 128Hz.

(A word of caution with these OLED panels: They look amazing but burn-in is real.)

  • Download all the computers. (Virtual OS Museum)

Ever wanted to see what the old days of computing were like - as early as 1948?

Want to play with that Apple II or BBC Micro your parents couldn't afford?

Or just want to play with a Lisp or Smalltalk workstation?

It's all here. 179GB of it.

  • Wikipedia editors are threatening a global strike where they'll stop airbrushing history. (The Register)

    Oh no.

44 Yesterday, we ( spouse and I) took a walk by the lake and canal . We two two blue herons , two logs full of turtles including a tiny paintief turtle which was the size of someone making at o.k. sign. They were all lovely.

Then we stopped in at a church. The services were held in a school building . I could hear people getting choked up including the pastor. It was apparently their last service. Too many people in leadership had moved away, or died or disagreed with what he preached. He was a very good preacher. His church is paying for him for a sabbatical for a year which I think is very kind of them.

48 It was quite a first day with the MacBook Air.

Within minutes of doing the initial set up creating an Apple account failed spectacularly and made it impossible to proceed. An hour later, me and AI Girl Boss support tech are besties and are going out and getting hammered next Friday. That AI system is amazing.

The hardware is topnotch. The software fit and finish is on another level. The speakers compared to my Surface Pro are pathetic. The Mac keyboard is a mind blow.

Coming directly out of Windows with zero prep I discovered MacOs is f'ing annoying with some regularity. Not having a touch screen is f'ing annoying. I also discovered that significant parts of my Windows setup on MacOs is DOA and there is no easy way to fix that - this may be a deal breaker - having both platforms in my life for the foreseeable future likely means maintaining two versions of that setup. Complete Chaos.

As for the rest of my computing stack - it is all there and it works great - I am sort of shocked I made it that far. Along long the way I got pretty deep into the settings and configuration, far more than I should been able to on day 1.

52 AP, I'm glad your first day with the MacBook went well! Once I get settled in IN, I may well buy a newer but refurbished one from the macsales site. There is *zero* wrong with my 2014 except low memory, and for my purposes -- web crawling, email, watching YooToob -- 4 GB seems to be fine. I take it to coffee shops and it finds the network without difficulty.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at June 01, 2026 05:51 AM (wzUl9)

53 Essentially, the Macbook Air is setup and ready to use and it is a pretty fine box. Remarkably I have adapted to the MacOs way of interfacing with box; with a bit of practice I can see that part of going between the platforms would be a no brainer rather quick.

The delta between my Windows universe and the MacOS universe on the other hand is a problem. I am going to do some deep research tomorrow on how I might get them stop sticking there tongues out at each other. If I can get that to stop the box stays. If not it is going back. Bummer.

And if it does go back, the Qualcomm X2s will be hear in a few months and should make for some snappy Windows on Arm boxes. The big issue is there is how much they are going to cost. The Macbook Air right now is one heck of computing bargain; they are killer machines.

Good work, Clarence!

Unfortunately summer *has* arrived in Da Swamp. Yesterday was the first 90 F. day -- relatively late this year; usually it's early in May, or even late in April. 80 outside now, I don't wanna know the heat index, and I have to go work out in it. Gah.

61 If anyone you folks know is shopping for a PC and is not married into a platform this MacBook Air 13" should be way, way, way on the shopping list. Amazon has a Macbook Air 13" with 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD for $950.00 USD plus sales tax if applicable. Not exactly in the budget range but close for a first rate box. That pricing sort of makes it not worth going the used/reconditioned route.

The monitor is just wicked nice as is the keyboard. Plus it is impossibly thin and light. Apple crushed it with this box.

62 (A word of caution with these OLED panels: They look amazing but burn-in is real.)

Truth.
I use my second monitor OLED for watching video mostly.

Using productivity apps, with a lot of static elements, on that monitor scares me too much, so I avoid it.

This one is a 2025 Asus model with "OLED Care" like Pixel Cleaning (automatic & manual), Logo Dimming, and Screen Move which helps out a lot, and I haven't seen any burn-in after using it for six+ months.

You could also try a MiniLED monitor. They are IPS but they have much better contrast and deeper blacks. They are as close to OLED as you can get without worrying about burn-in and they are generally cheaper price-wise. They are also thinker and heavier than OLED screens, but around the same size as a normal IPS LED.

I tried a decent one last year but it had a dead pixel in the center of the display so I took it back and got the OLED instead. If it hadn't been for that problem I'd have probably kept it.

Posted by: SpeakingOf at June 01, 2026 06:24 AM (6ydKt)

69 There are some MiniLED with VA panels in them.
These have better contrast ratios than the IPS versions but they also have the same "smearing" problem that VA has with fast motion, especially in gaming.

Posted by: SpeakingOf at June 01, 2026 06:27 AM (6ydKt)

70 MiniLEDs, VA panels. If the price was somewhat reasonable I could see going with something like that. There are exactly zero smearing concerns with what I do. Good suggestions/reminders. Thanks.

74 One of the subtle pluses of the Microsoft Surface machines is the screens have an 3:2 aspect ratio. It is sort of perfect. Apple is close with their 16:10 aspect ratio but you get something less I think because of the top bar stuff required by MacOs. 16:9s are not tall enough.

It took Microsoft a bunch of years to get things right but their Surface PCs compete well with the MacBook Airs especially since the Qualcomm ARM CPU based boxes have come so far. The X2 CPUs are going to be milestone and should put some serious pressure on the X86 universe; best guess is the ARM boxes are going to have serious market share in about 5 years.

27", 2160p, 2300 dimming zones (which is really good for a monitor MiniLED), 165Hz, 3000:1 Contrast Ratio, HDR with 1400 nits.

$799

The company AOC makes some cheaper models that are on Amazon. Also MSI makes a few MiniLEDs that are pretty good, which Amazon sells, too.

77 Mornin', Horde. Always loved 'Forever Autumn'. Have the album in vinyl; once responded to something at work with 'Ulla!' and a cow-orker recognised it.

78 TCL R94...looked up a few details. Not for me. I need something with 10 bit depth, large color space coverage, a 16:10 aspect ratio and is 30-32 inches. Still, the TCL R94 for general computing / Gaming - that is pretty sweet.

79 3:2 screens are very rare for some reason.
16:9 is ubiquitous, and 16:10 is very popular with laptops just for the extra height.

I miss 4:3.

(no, not really)

81 True 10 bit color might be the hold up on MiniLED for you then.
I think most are 8 bit + FRC.
Their are some pro versions from Asus and Dell that get true 10 bit but they are pricey, around $4000.

Might as well get a OLED at that point.

But most MiniLED can get up there to 98% DCI-P3 and 100%+ sRGB.

82 I think Pixy would appreciate this. Imagine the last few month's events was a circa 2000 anime...
