Wednesday Night ONT - June 3, 2026 [TRex]

20260603-IMG_20260603_092223346_2.jpg

Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans. The bar is open.

Welcome to the Wednesday night ONT which means another edition of random overnight fun and games. Pull up a chair and join the fun. Good will offerings of amusing puns are encouraged. Pants are optional but why would you be wearing pants for the ONT? Be nice to your fellow commenters and AoS contributors. This is a Tucker, Candace, Megyn and Bill Kristol free zone. Please.

I know what you're thinking. "I've been sitting here all evening in my underwear tearing through a bag of blue ranch Doritos contemplating the mysteries of life. There's crap on television and only cat videos on the internet. If only there was a place on the interweb that was an oasis of sorts. If only there was a place where the eccentric and eclectic gathered and Truth, Justice and the American Way still led from the front. I've got Dorito crumbs everywhere and my glass is almost empty but still...if only there was some overnight thread where the irreverent and insightful blend their collective wisdom and keep vigil to ensure the flames of freedom remain lit..."

Anyway.

There is also an air museum at the old blimp hangar South of town, and if you go in August 5-8 that is the county fair, which I think is one of the best county fairs in Oregon.

One of the best things about our move to Idaho is that the Oregon coast is one long day drive away. Perfect for a three or four day weekend. Ranchers, farmers, hunters, fishermen. much like Colorado, the rot is in small areas, Portland, Salem, Eugene, Astoria. Central and eastern Oregon, in particular, want to become part of Greater Idaho.

Speaking of meteor craters, in 2029 asteroid Aphophis will come within GSO distance of earth (20K miles). Uncertainty in trajectory is now down to a couple km, and JPL assures no chance of impact in the next 100 years.

If Apophis hit, it would be around 2 GT, ~40 Tsar Bombas. That would be a region killer, but not a dino-killer global extinction event (although it would be a bitch for survivors for a while).

84 FUN FACT: If you special-ordered a Mercedes before 2019 MB would host you in Stuttgart to take delivery of your new car. A factory tour and entry to the MB museum were included, and you'd get 7% off the MSRP.

I grew up in Cody. Every year, before Memorial Day, they would have a free day for locals. I loved hanging out for the day. I would browse the firearms and such, but spent most of my time in the art gallery. So many C.M. Russell and Fredric Remington, and so many more artists. They had a whole aisle of Russell letters to friends and family, and he would include quick watercolor sketches along the margins. Even his letters were works of art.

The Russians continue to hope the Ukrainians will finally collapse, and the Ukrainians continue to hope the war will spread and Europe will rescue them.

Meanwhile, the Iranians are taking notes.

Had dinner. Watched the start of a new series with the man who puts up with me. Then realized I thought it was Friday vs Wednesday.

In the recent progression of confusing days since the near cholera, this is progress as at least I am moving forward vs thinking it was Monday.

The good news is our baby girl, without the help of her highly respected pediatrician professor (who still wears a mask I was told), has decided to be cured on her own without her stinking doctor's help.

In Ace's Cafe I realized the confusion when I wished him a happy weekend. I mean, he could take off two days with my permission now. You all could.

157 There's a possibility that Apophis will fragment due to tidal forces when it gets so close. And you might wonder if that would alter things enough to make a future impact likely. However, JPL and the boys assure us that a fragmentation still won't thread any keyholes.

When my family lived in Parkersburg, W.Va, back in the late 50's, early 06's, we did the Fenton factory tour many times.

For a kid watching the glass blowing was pretty amazing. I remember they had a seconds shop and my sisters and I had quite a collection of little Knick Knacks.

161 I don't remember paying anything to get into Westminster Abbey at least 4 times.

However, since I have acute amnesia of time due to several layers of stress for six weeks to test my limits (I still have limits left but am not going to announce this to God), I could be wrong.

I thought we went in and gave a donation or lit a candle as we did in Notre Dame. It is possible I don't remember paying as I am not the boss of me for money. I also travel free and wild with no care.

The Pittsburgh scanner still cracks me up.

Thanks for the ONT and have a great weekend. I am just going to start saying this randomly on any given day.

168 US Space and Rocket Center, Huntsville, AL - $30.00

I was a teenager when it was built. My friends and I had marvelous times exploring. It's two miles from the house but I haven't been in this century except for a few dedications. My uncle's name is on the wall there dedicated to all who worked on the Saturn V and made notable contributions to the Space program.

OTOH, I have been to the National Naval Aviation Museum, Pensacola, FL many times until I lost the ability to walk without assistance. I took thousands of photographs knowing I'd never get to see them again if I didn't.

The National Museum of the Air Force, Dayton, OH can be viewed online in 3D although it is on my bucket list.

Also, FWIW, I worked on testing the Space Shuttle at all of the test stands as a subcontractor for Bendix Aerospace in the late 80's. It was an interesting time seeing the interior of the SRB and working around the External Tank, they were huge.

Free is good.

I can't decide if this is a phobia I've had for years or what, but if there's a mole I am focused on it with tv people. Thankfully not in real life (I don't think I know anyone with a facial mole currently).

191 If you want to see Apophis' orbital trajectory go here:

t.ly/2bXJg

Their 3D simulator there infuriates me. It will by default lock on the selected object and give you some oblique view. The first thing you want to do is *unlock* the camera, then *reset* the camera. That will put the Sun in the center of the frame. Now grab screen with the mouse and drag it down to a polar view so you're looking down on the plane of the solar system. Now adjust the time and date to get close to 2029, adjust the speed if desired, and then let it run.

You'll see it almost hit earth. At that point you can adjust the view to the side and see the full 3D picture of how close it gets.

Yeah. XH was 'eligible' for PO2 in '84. PNA'd until finally getting advanced in '87. Of course, POCs with lower scores and less time were advanced ahead of him.

221 Yup. I was a medic in the Army, and our NCO was a pudgy Puerto Rican woman who was unable to pass a PT test, and hated men. My buddy and I were ignored for promotion or any kind of minor citations. And yet, another dullard woman (black) was promoted ahead of us, despite having been in country a shorter time. She was thick as a brick, in the head.

So, yeah, the double standard has been going on for a fucking long time in the military. A huge reason I did not reenlist after Desert Storm. I was fucking sick of it all.

223 Did a golf trip to the Savannah area back in the early 00s. For reasons passing understanding, I hadn't heard of the Mighty Eighth museum there (8th Air Force) and so didn't see it. And back then I would have surely been able to talk to some 8th vets, who were docents (sadly, not now).

Still miss my Guadalcanal vet docent colleague from the days as docent at the Flying Leathernecks' museum. And the other WWII vets who volunteered or visited.

And some of the visitors. A 50-something Chinese-American guy brought his elderly grandfather. The father instantly recognized the TBF, pointing and saying (in Chinese to his son) "that's one, that's one!". Son explained his dad was a kid living next to a Japanese airfield on Taiwan (Formosa) during Task Force 38's rampage in the region in 1945. The boys cheered the US planes strafing the Japanese airfield - and the mothers went nuts to shut the kids up and get them inside, of course!

224 Meant to say Chinese-American guy brought his elderly *father* into the museum.

That kind really sends me...have mercy!

Now that I think deeply, perhaps it was the Walton's that got me started on my mole deal.

Did John Boy ever have his removed?

It's really gotten to the point I want to tell strangers they need a certain mole checked for melanoma vs just whacking them off with a scalpel if near a mouth and the sticking out kind like Obungo's.

Onward!

226 168 Also, FWIW, I worked on testing the Space Shuttle at all of the test stands as a subcontractor for Bendix Aerospace in the late 80's. It was an interesting time seeing the interior of the SRB and working around the External Tank, they were huge.

Free is good.
Posted by: Gmac-WTF did you think was going to happen? at June 03, 2026 11:09 PM (Q/FnY)

Gmac- I worked at the Bendix plant in North Hollywood back in the '80's. Now they send me a smallish check every month. They're gone but the pension survives....

Also - my first 'new' car was a Pontiac financed thru GMAC....if that is what your nic refers to...,

229 Since the Karmelo Anthony murder trial is being held in McKnney, TX in Collin County state court, I would think the prosecutor might stand a chance.

I've never been to McKinney, TX, but it doesn't sound like Bad Leroy Brown country.
