Posted by: Don Black at May 29, 2026 05:50 AM (ZxPkt)

35 I spent a lot of yesterday on the phone, talking with movers and home inspection companies. I have the inspection for the new house lined up now. Moving? It looks like I can get one "van lines" company to do everything (except packing the small stuff); or three different ones: a local to load everything in a truck and bring it to the U-Pack people, U-Pack to take it to Indiana, an IN local to unload everything at the destination. Either might cost about the same in the end, but one requires less coordination.

Renting a truck and trailering my car? Not with two cats in carriers. A one-day trip might be okay, but not two days. If Linda drove, she could pilot the Buick with the cats, while I did the truck . . . but no.

I thought of leaving the cats with her, and having her bring them up by train. Amtrak doesn't look cheap, though, and she'd have to ride to Chicago and then back down to Indianapolis. Still, I'm keeping the idea in reserve.

The good side: I'll be outta here before the serious part of hurricane season!

37 If anybody is looking for a potentially good Android tablet, Walmart might have what you need with their newest versions of the ONN brand tablets.

ETA Prime on YouTube has reviewed them and they seem to be a pretty good deal for the money.

They have three sizes:
8.1" with a 90Hz IPS display @ 1000 x 1524
6GB RAM - 64GB storage - $130 -
Review: https://youtu.be/DM2xNHQ1Ml0

11" with a 90Hz IPS display @ 1840 x 1280
6GB RAM - 128GB storage - $160 -
Review: https://youtu.be/_ck_yR6iFIo

13.2" with a 120Hz IPS display @ 2400 x 1600
8GB RAM - 256GB storage - $288 -
Review: https://youtu.be/p8_gR_2yPsU

ETA Prime goes through all of the specs and plays a few games to test them out.

They all have metal back construction and SD slots as well.
The 13.2" model comes with a case in the box, too.

These could be perfect for anybody who doesn't want an iPad, Samsung, or Kindle tablet.

No, fluffy, Terre Haute, about an hour or so west. Another issue; if Linda would be willing to ride Amtrak to Indy, I'd have to go get her and the cats. It's not like the old days when trains crisscrossed the country and hit nearly every mid-sized town; oh, no.

I have an older brother who lives in FL. He's a flight nurse and his company can send him out to CA at a moment's notice. Mom is actually the one with the main responsibility and they live in the kind of retirement community that will take care of them.

58 "A one-day trip might be okay, but not two days."

I drove from Ann Arbor, MI to North Dallas in one shot (~955 miles). With a cat sitting on top of the pile of belongings that I had stuffed in the car. (There was a litter box behind one of the seats and the cat watched the world go by on top of the pile. She had taken a trans-Atlantic flight from Germany to Fort Knox without complaint 7 years earlier, so maybe she was special.)

Yeah, I was lot younger then and I wasn't towing anything, but still an average speed of 50 mph over 18 hours is 900 miles. If you can bump the average to 55 mph over 18 hours, you get 990 miles. Given that most interstates allow at least 65 mph, you could do the jump in one go.

Terre Haute is about 700 miles. Theoretically, in the car, with bathroom breaks for me and gas stops, I could do the trip in 12 hours. I'd be worn down and making driving mistakes down toward the end, though.

Well, it appears she is a respectable woman who won't be galivanting off across the fruited plains with some guy. Maybe you should reconsider your long standing relationship and offer her some token of your affection. Maybe a circular one made of some valuable metal with a stone.

Posted by: CrotchetyOldJarhead at May 29, 2026 06:39 AM (3Ope8)

80 Good kitty!

Well, we described her as "buttish". She wasn't a lap cat, but she'd be near us; if you touched her, she'd lick the place you touched.

She used to open the under-sink cabinets in the bathrooms and leave them open (which my wife accused me of doing until the cat opened one of them in front of both of us). She would also wait until I finished taking a shower to go lick up that shower water (versus the water bowl water); I had taken a shower just prior to us watching the movie "Burnt by the Sun". At the end of that rather depressing (but good) movie, we realized that "Puddy" (yes, we named her that versus my earlier name of "CAT!") hadn't gone into the bathroom where I had showered to lick up the water. She had jumped on a bed and died of (I guess) a heart attack. That was on a New Year's weekend, so I had to put her in a box in the garage until something opened that could handle her. I've got her box of ashes still.

That's what I'm leaning toward. I haven't called Bekins yet, though.

Timing will be tough. If I close at the end of June on the house, I'll need to come back down here, finish packing everything up, and do the move in July. And I want to have the carpet taken up and the hardwood in two rooms refinished while I'm gone -- a lot simpler to do that *before* I move all my furniture in. The repainting of two walls, well, maybe I can do that myself. I really don't want medium-brown walls in my dining room. . . .

Good morning! I think he is part of the progressive church that where leftist political views are their foundation and Jesus doesn't care what you do as long as it's luuuuuuuuv. Nobody could come up with "God is non binary" or what he says about Mary and abortion while talking the Bible seriously . The fact that the pastor where he attends doesn't even mention. Jesus in his biography but something along the lines of " I love world religions" tells me all I need to know .its like the Presbyterian version of the Unitarian Universalists
That's not to say that the pastor isn't a nice person. I'm sure there are any
Number of caring people there but Talarico and his pastor are not "orthodox" Christians in the slightest

83 It'd be quicker, though not a lot easier or cheaper, to fly up to TH for the closing and then back down. I dread the idea of airports and planes now, though, and I'll have to change planes at least once, I think.

Amtrak to Indy won't be any cheaper than a plane, and would take as long as driving.

My wife found a contract job in Toronto during the 2008 economy. When I moved her back down to Texas in 2009, we drove through Niagara Falls on the way.

We wanted to park the car with the piles of crap in it to go look at the falls, but decided not to since there was possibility that some asshole would punch out a window to steal the stuff they could see.

If you can afford someone else moving most of your stuff, I'd go for that if you can't do the drive in one go yourself. YMMV; it wasn't a guarantee that someone would have broken into our car to steal shit, but...you know.

98 Do you hate two factor authentication? I hate two factor authentication. It's quickly becoming pointless:

"The FBI is warning that a new hacking platform is allowing cybercriminals to hijack Microsoft 365 accounts — including Outlook, Teams and OneDrive — while bypassing multi-factor authentication entirely."

The scheme exploits Microsoft’s legitimate OAuth 2.0 “device code” authentication system — a feature commonly used to log into smart TVs, streaming devices and other hardware with limited keyboards.

Rather than stealing passwords directly, attackers trick victims into entering a code on a real Microsoft login page, unknowingly authorizing the hacker’s device

115 @48/Pixy: "They're aware of this an that's why they're slow-walking expansion. The reason there are only three big memory manufacturers is all the rest suffered fatal "uh oh" moments in previous bubbles."

I'm aware, but that's not the "uh oh" moment I'm referring to.

Here's how I see it having gone so far:

1. Situation normal, memory manufacturers making memory for consumer market and some for data centers.
2. Data center demand spikes massively due to AI bubble.
3. Memory manufacturers see huge profitability in pivoting to the new demand and rationing to the consumer market, so of course they do this.
4. Consumer market prices spike, and supply very much restricted.
5. OEMs and all manufacturers that rely on memory now having difficulty producing their own products to meet their consumers' demand.
6. More and more companies in (5) go out of business over time as they can't meet their customers' demands, and thus can't remain profitable.
7. Data center bubble finally pops. Demand from that sector craters.
8. Memory manufacturers pivot back to consumer market.
9. A lot of the consumer-market customers are just GONE.
10. Who do we sell to now? "Uh oh."

Yes, there is at least one branch of the Indiana state university system there. I don't know yet about antique shops, thrift stores, and galleries. But it's a town of 60K people, not 6K; it's got to have some of those.

Our usual thing on Friday nights is to have a Walmart or Aldi pizza, but she's said she's tired of that. I may order a couple of calzones from the nearby Italian place that recently had somebody drive through the front wall. They're open for carry-out, it's a short drive, and I want to keep them in business. After dinner, well, I'll show her the house pics, and try to discuss all this. I think she believed I was never gonna do it after being retired for a year.

129 @107/no one of any consequense: "Speaking if Niagara Falls, I am happy to report that SC handicap placards are honored on the Canadian side."

This is due to the reciprocity agreement that the 50 States motor vehicle departments have with the Canadian provinces ministries of transportation. This allows Canadians and Americans to drive in each other's territories keeping their home-territory license plates on while visiting, insurance to be recognized as valid cross-border, and for any tickets gotten in another territory to be enforceable back in your own home state.

Good luck renewing your plates or driver's license if you have unpaid tickets in another territory, though.

Anyway, yes, the Handicap placard you have from your state would definitely be considered valid up here in Ontario Canada unless it was marked with an expiry date and you were beyond that date. Then they might make an issue of it, but probably not, unless it was more than 3 to 6 months out of date. At that point, you're no longer considered a "visitor" but a resident, and should have local provincial plates and a province-issued handicapped placard. They want their revenue, after all.

139 So what I asked google to do was create a name parser in c++.

The parser we developed takes a name string and parses it into it's component's and stores them in a JSON.

So if you enter Mr. Hector Camacho De La Luz Jr.

It will parse it as:

Salutation: Mr.
First: Hector
Middle: Camacho
Last: De La Luz
Suffix: Jr.

It timestamps the entries and has an edited date field for when the entry gets edited.

You can perform operations like, sort, edit, delete, search, export to CSV, batch import a csv.

It has logic to detect duplicates and you get the point.

You can take that code and put it in your bank of helper functions for pretty much any project you're working on.

The point is, that's pretty f***ing amazing.
