A lovely painting for Memorial Day. The hat suggests Sewing Lady's husband was a Union officer. This must be set around 1900 if he's still alive, or maybe a little later if she's got the hat out to remind herself of him.

Nice touch of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) soldier's hat.
The presence of the hat suggests the seamstress may be a Civil War widow, adding deeper patriotic and memorial significance to the act of mending the flag. [Per Brave "AI":] "The painting depicts a seamstress mending an American flag on Memorial Day (published May 27, 1922). The hat, propped on a sewing box, serves as a poignant reminder of the Civil War era, as 1922 marked the last time Civil War veterans marched in a presidential parade." The number of stars in the flag would be a clue as to the time period of this painting, but we can't see how many there are. There's lots of space between them, though.
Maybe it has 46 stars, and this is set before NM and AZ became states in 1912. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at May 25, 2026 09:39 AM (wzUl9) 22

Posted by: Bulg at May 25, 2026 09:37 AM (77rzZ) ------------- Thanks, Bulg. Those were not among the manners I learned from my single mom ... but will do so going forward. Although not religious, I spoke 30 minutes with a couple of young female LDS Missionaries a few days ago, and for the first time in my life wished others "A Blessed Day" -- so it's growing on me. One other thing of note: I have noticed in the past decade people saying to me "I appreciate YOU" -- which is usually from Christians, and throws me for a loop (strikes me as both un-humble and taking into account facts not necessarily in evidence). I have a hard time saying it to others, having ubiquitously said "I appreciate IT" to others when they behave in a kind manner. This vaguely reminds me of Grandma. Mostly, in the slight smile and contented look on her face as she concentrated on doing some little chore or cooking. She was a Gold Star Mother, so Memorial Day was never a happy day but one of remembrance. She would proudly display the little Gold Star Mother banner(?) in the living room window, so it could be seen from the street. For those not there at the time, our wonderful hippies and anti-wartards often targeted Gold Star Mothers on that day with ridicule and shaming. Fortunately, Grandma never had any of that. You never see the Gold Star in the windows of houses these days but at that time it was a fairly common sight. Posted by: naturalfake at May 25, 2026 09:56 AM (iJfKG) 59

Posted by: ShainS -- Democrat-Communsts should change their name to Murder, Inc. before Islam trademarks it [/b at May 25, 2026 09:38 AM (OLFlC) Presidential parade, yes. I believe the last public gathering of any kind was an anniversary celebration at Gettysburg in 1937, which managed to find 4 veterans (from both sides) still able to participate. Posted by: Tom Servo at May 25, 2026 09:56 AM (ykvlb) 60
The scene is simple: an older lady repairing a flag. That's the first impression. But her expression is serene. The hat indicates a husband or son, possibly lost in war. She is not crushed by the loss but honors the flag he followed and cherishes her memories of the man. Her age shows she didn't give up or despair but carried on a life the sacrifice ensured.
In its understated way the painting speaks of dedication, acceptance, appreciation, and patriotism. Just dealing with the technical aspects, enlarge the image. The overall impression is soft but realistic. The detail reveals the soft, rather dry, brush work Rockwell used. Part of his talent was choosing the colors and blending them effectively to create an illusion of realism. Posted by: JTB at May 25, 2026 09:56 AM (yTvNw) 61

The leaders of course set an example, which was in large part because they knew each other before the war, were classmates and wished it had all never happened. So you see various generals serving as pall-bearers for their opponents. But the troops fraternized constantly, traded supplies, and while much was made of Chamberlain ordering his troops to salute the Confederates after Appomattox, the respect was real. As a side note, when Churchill addressed the Civil War in his History of the English Speaking Peoples, he made a particular point that the battles were far fiercer than those in Europe.
He expressed awe (and perhaps a little maternal pride)at units on both sides that regularly fought to the point of annihilation, and he later reflected on this when America entered the war. He did not at all think Americans were soft because he knew what they were capable of doing. The Germans and Japanese found out the hard way. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H.
