Sunday Overnight Open Thread - May 24, 2026 [Doof]

Howdy Hordelings! Welcome to the Sunday night ONT. Appreciate you spending some of your holiday weekend here. Open thread, as always. Fashion and music, as always. What's on YOUR mind tonight?

A different time

-----

Remember when this was new cutting edge tech?

-----

Do you remember any of these old restaurants?

HJCIRM9WoAEKxzV-rr.jpg

Farrells is the one I remember most. The one near me was in Golden Ring Mall, in eastern Baltimore County. There was an arcade next door. Such great times!

-----

How about old, cheap beer? Which one was your go to? One of these or a different one?

HJCSkmLbcAAZZSC-rr.jpg

In Baltimore, our go to was National Bohemian - "Natty Boh" for short. We also had Milwaukee's Best (The Beast) and Shaeffer. What was the bargain beer in your neck of the woods?

It's that time of the week - when we turn the ONT over to our good friend Piper for a bit. Here's this week's fashion pr0n.

My Birthday Wishlist: “Practical” Gifts? Probably not.

I’ve been asked a few times now what I want for my birthday, and it looks like successfully ignoring the whole thing isn’t going to work this year.

So here’s the current lineup. No quiet luxury snoozefest here. I’m going with fun, wearable, “yes I’m extra” energy only.

1. A Lady Dior Bag

The iconic Dior Lady Dior in classic black cannage lambskin. Medium size, please. Big enough for my essentials, lipstick, and snacks, but not so huge I look like I’m smuggling baguettes. Those D.I.O.R. charms? Chef’s kiss.
Why it’s on the list: Because it’s classic, and gorgeous.

IMG_1836-rr.jpg

2. Christian Louboutin Strappy Sandals

Louboutin Marilyn Slingback Sandal. Ideal for a birthday dinner where I plan to sit dramatically and pretend this is how I dress daily.
Why it’s on the list: Because nothing says glamorous like shoes that make you walk like you own the sidewalk.

IMG_1831-rr.jpg

3. A sundress from Zimmerman that made me gasp

A Zimmermann Indra Metallic Stripe Print Silk and Cotton Halter dress. It’s breezy, but elevated. It has such interesting details- subtle cutouts, a flattering twist, the color blocking.

Why it’s on the list: This one would be worn on repeat for summer brunches where I pretend I have my life together.

IMG_1832-rr.jpg

4. MOUSSY Vintage Jeans

Perfectly faded Deltona Straight selvedge jeans with a lived-in look. The kind that make you feel effortlessly chic even when you’re just running to Target.
But Piper, you may be thinking, Why these? Don’t you already have a few pairs of MOUSSY jeans hanging in the closet? Yes, but not these ones in particular!

Why it’s on the list: because I love a rigid, 100% cotton jean with a button fly.

IMG_1834-rr.jpg

Bonus Wishlist Wildcard:

Luxury sunglasses in a modern cat eye because I keep looking at them.

IMG_1835-rr.jpg

There you have it — my very mature, very reasonable birthday wishlist. Here’s to another trip around the sun in style!

-----

Thanks, Piper. Hope you have a wonderful birthday tomorrow!

Don't forget to check out Piper's X page.

47 I just stumbled across a wild Reddit thread, specifically on the Seattle group. The post was about how Meta layoffs are hitting H1-B workers from India especially hard; all these guest workers who have brought over their families and put their kids in local schools are now panicking about being made to go back in the next few months.

What makes it wild is the comments section. Again, this is Reddit we're talking about; and Seattle is, well, Seattle. And yet, the comments were basically telling these immigrants to piss off. Among the juicier responses were "drop these anchor baby scams"; "They're so entitled they make actual Americans look humble"; "Prioritize jobs for US citizens"; and "put the temporary back in temporary work visas."

If we're seeing this kind of sentiment even among Seattle users of Reddit...eh, maybe there's hope for the country after all.

55 The largest, the "Zoo" sundae, was delivered with great fanfare by a number of employees carrying it wildly around the restaurant on a stretcher, accompanied by the sound of ambulance sirens. Another menu item that was served in a mini pig trough was the "Trough". If the person who ordered it ate the entire sundae, employees would come out banging on a drum, announce the accomplishment to the entire restaurant, and present the customer with either a ribbon or a pinback button that said, "I made a pig of myself at Farrell's!"

122 47 I just stumbled across a wild Reddit thread, specifically on the Seattle group.

His main page there has a lot more.

IIRC, the lethal range for a Saturn V was about 800'. Within that radius, the shockwaves would be enough to kill you. I think that's greater for Starship. Of course, the minimum safe distance is a lot greater than that, that's just the lethal shockwave distance.

135 Americana at its very best

I have a theory about this - that back during the cold war America's elites felt they had to keep the corruption to a manageable level because they had real opponents and if they screwed up badly enough they could have gotten the Che Guevara treatment.

But when the Soviets felt that evaporated. Since the US was the only hyperpower...why not dip your hand in the till? Ruling the world is hard work and no one will notice...

And then 30 years later you have the Biden junta stealing $4T and no one really batted an eye.

When she did come up to us, she practically sneered something like, if you boys had been better (we were doing nothing wrong), she'd have come to take our order sooner. No idea what her problem was.

My friend, with the friendliest smile, twinkling eyes, and bright voice, looked her in the face and said, "Oh, that's all right, ma'am. We like bad service." Shut her up good.

Toured the Coors brewery early 70s. They told all of us to never buy Coors not refrigerated. They didn't (then) pasteurize their beer and it went south pretty fast if warmed.

I grew up a few blocks from a Burger Chef and thought their burgers and fries were great. I ate at a different BC across town (Louisville) one time and the burger was way overcooked and had no seasoning and it was dry as hell. I think it depends on the franchise owner. They definitely didn't have the same quality control across franchises like McDonald's does.

Not a bucket full of bottled beer. No. Rather a real bucket full of beer. After my freshman year they no longer served any drinks in glass pitchers. Someone, I won't say who, learned those dumbasses that one could use it as a weapon.

Jeans bagging out can be a problem, especially jeans with stretch, but you might be buying them too big to start. If you can handle the break in, find 100% cotton, like zero stretch at all, in the slimmest fit you can handle.

Re those enormous shockwaves. Damping those is the main purpose of the water deluge system. I remember as a little kid back in the Apollo days, the water deluge was explained as protecting the pad from the intense heat of the rocket flame plume and blast.

It does that, but that "direct fire heat" is not the majority. The majority comes from the shockwaves, which is why they call it the "sound suppression system" sometimes. It's enough to flash water to steam right there.

Just imagine "sound" that powerful. Enough energy to flash water to steam.

I couldn't really afford to go out to eat much, but had to do something to get out of my dark, stuffy closet of a residence.

Another classy memory: I was sitting on the hood of my car in the parking lot of one of those places, eating my food and reading some SF paperback. A cop pulled up to talk to me; said he'd had a report of some kid "freaking out" in the parking lot. I said, yeah, sitting here reading a book probably seems like freaking out to some folks.

The cop and I chatted a bit. I looked at the seal on the car door and read the Latin logo, "Populus Regnat," I read, "The people rule."

"Is that what it means?" asks the cop. Yeah, I said. He sourly replied, "Not anymore they don't." And off he went.

261 A few of us, mostly former service members, went out to the cemetery in my hometown Friday afternoon. Placed US flags alongside all the veteran's graves. As may be typical for smaller, middle America towns, there are a lot of flags up for tomorrow's Memorial Day service. There are two tombstones with names and dates for two WW2 men who didn't come home and their bodies are in the ocean. Each year at this time I remember that my dad and his fellow soldiers, airmen, marines and sailors just didn't talk about those times often. It's a serious date here.

That's all for me tonight. I'll tune in again tomorrow to see what happens!

Coolest thing about Rolling Rock was the large number 33 stamped on every bottle. There were all kinds of theories as to what it meant. They finally admitted that the guy designing the bottle screwed up way back in 1939. It was his margin notes and it was mistaken for part of the design....(something to do with font size). As Rolling Rock used returnable bottles...the "33" endured. And, eventually they just made it part of their modern lables. People came up with all kinds of outlandish rationailizations including 1933 (end of prohibition), 33 words total on the side of the bottle. 33 steps to the brewmaster's office from the brewery....etc.

I remember vaguely our parents talking about driving down for a launch in the latter years but it was quite a drive and commitment. Launch delays or scrubbed missions were always a possibility

In answer to the question about whether mass-produced foreign beers are better than their U.S. counterparts, I would say it depends on what "mass produced" means in the European context.

I'm reading some more. This water deluge being more "flame/heat" protection vs sound suppression is complicate. As a near as can gather, the Saturn V system was the former.

They used a huge lateral flame trench and deflector setup to channel the shockwaves sideways so they didn't bounce back to the rocket. That was the "sound suppression" system. The water deluge was indeed just about flame/plume protection.

It was with the Shuttle they started used the water deluge for active sound suppression.

Scale matters. "Mass produced" for a country of 5 million (Ireland) is different than for a country 80 million (Germany), or a country of 350 million (USA).

I'd say the other "mass produced" beers around us suck. Corona and Modelo to the south? Labatt, Molsons, and Fosters (made in Canada for the USA, not in Aussieland) to the north?

Negra Modelo is pretty okay, though.

It is related to the Tiger Grandma story from SE Asia where the Grandma got robbed of everything on the way home by the tigers, including her hands and head, which the tigers tried to use to get the grandchildren to open the door for them so they could eat the children too. It is a version of Red Riding Hood, but without the Woodsman.
I think it also reflects the original Astarte story about how Astarte went to the underworld to save a servant and had to trade everything she had a bit at a time to bribe her way past the demons guarding the various portals in Hell.

A shame about Carey. Someone I know (much younger) headed out to Hollyweird to try do comedy back in the day, like most didn't make it, but for a while did end up as a personal assistant to Carey's side-kick comedian guy (Ryan something? tall skinny guy) and maybe a bit for Carey as well. Also, Carey I believe made a point of visiting vets hospitals, Walter Reed and Bethesda when he was in DC, and instructed his people "no publicity". If true, that seemed good. He was in the Marines.

The real reason is because Anheuser-Busch is located in St. Louis and could get the legislature to squash its competition. I think the real problem is that no one is really in charge in Iran. We decapitated their leadership... and now there is a major power struggle going on with the various factions each ignoring each other.

The IEMI # is marked in a national database forever, no carrier will connect to it. 911 always works, on any cellphone.
Posted by: buddhaha

I would think the safest thing to do there would be to take it to the cops, and let them dial 911 on it. No sense dispatching a bunch of flashing lights to your neighborhood for a missing phone.

If you call and then find out that it's not just a cracked screen..... the microphone doesn't work, so they think you're kidnapped or choking to death or something.

490 If not the blockade isn't going anywhere and we have enough fire power on the doorstep to blow Iran into oblivion.

It's all worthless if Trump doesn't have the stomach to use it.

The Iranian regime's behavior suggests that they believe that to be the case. They don't seem to much care about our blockade either.

I know this will come as news to people who are accustomed to a society where we demand lower interest rates so that we can more easily live on borrowed money, but some people are sufficiently disciplined that they can make do with less if that's necessary to achieve the goals that matter to them.

Old Mil was my fave as a broke college kid. A special in 1974 was a six pack for 1.99.

Cheap beers not mentioned were Buckhorn; Red, White and Blue; and Leinenkugels.

You could get a 12 pack of Leinie bottles, then return all the bottles for 12 cents. Being broke college kids we kept a stash of the empties in the kitchen corner for emergency beer purchases.

Meanwhile Trump is realigning the world and there's not too much attention on Netanyahu cleaning up Gaza and Lebanon.

502 >>It's all worthless if Trump doesn't have the stomach to use it.

Seems kind of a stretch to me after watching what Trump did in both his first term with ISIS and the ME and this term in Venezuela and the infamous drug boats he routinely blows to shit to say he doesn't have the stomach to kill our enemies when he thinks that is the right action. He's already sunk Iran's navy, blown up much of their missile capability and destroyed most of their industrial capacity to rearm.

He obviously wants to negotiate the end of this one and so far has united pretty much the rest of the Middle East to go along. And I bet he has China, that needs Iran's oil, deeply involved.

But if the negotiations ultimately fail he still has the military power to end it. It's been a few months not a few years and the elections are months away.

505 205 156 OK, here is a fashion question.

I'm fairly thin and I have no hips.

So when I buy jeans invariably they get loose after a couple of washes and while I can always use a belt its not the most comfortable thing in the world.

Am I just buying crappy brands of jeans?
Posted by: 18-1 at May 24, 2026 10:47 PM

Jeans bagging out can be a problem, especially jeans with stretch, but you might be buying them too big to start. If you can handle the break in, find 100% cotton, like zero stretch at all, in the slimmest fit you can handle.
Posted by: Piper at May 24, 2026 11:00 PM (p4NUW)

I know almost nothing about fashion, but (for hormonal reasons) I remembered Kate Moss in jeans, so I looked it up and they were Calvin Klein in the early '90s. Brave AI summary allows follow-up questions, so I found they're still making jeans, and even have some '90s throwback styles available.

Don't remember the Sambo's in Santa Barbara, can't picture it. And the Big Yellow House just south in Summerland wasn't a chain, was it?

Biggest loss in Santa Barbara was, for me, Guadalajara, on lower State Street. Only chorizo enchiladas I've ever encountered, fantastic.

I think it's a huge mistake to focus on any one thing Trump does in foreign relations and not see he is completely changing the playing field. Trump doesn't just know how to use the military, he knows how to use all the levers of power.

his is the world’s number-one sponsor of terror.

Barack Obama took $400 million in untraceable cash from something called the “Judgment Fund,” which is administered by the U.S. Department of the Treasury. That little-known account is funded entirely by American taxpayers and was set up so he could bypass congressional approval to send cash — effectively a ransom — to the world’s number-two sponsor of terror, the terror regime of Iran.

Part of this cash Barack Obama diverted through the UAE to Italy to fund—involving Leonardo S.p.A. military satellites to hack U.S. voting machines, flipping votes from Trump to Biden, which ultimately toppled the United States government on November 3, 2020

A further $1.3 billion was transferred in a series of 13 transfers of $99,999,999.99 from the Treasury Department’s Judgment Fund. Each transfer was one cent less than the $100 million limit imposed on such transfers. A member of his syndicate, Attorney General Loretta Lynch, pleaded the Fifth when questioned on the matter by the U.S. Congress.

📝 By the way, Barack Obama is founder of ISIL. All paid by the American taxpayer.
