Welcome to the Wednesday night ONT which means another edition of random overnight fun and games. Pull up a chair and sit a spell. Good will offerings of amusing puns are happily accepted and are eligible for comment of the week consideration. Pants are optional. Be nice to your fellow commenters and AoS contributors. This is a Tucker, Candace, Megyn and Bill Kristol free zone. Please. Will you be smarter after reading this ONT? Will you be better looking? Will you be more fun at parties? Will you see better at night? Will you be wealthier? Will you win at Connect Four? If you skip the content, you'll never know![Top photo: All hail the Fotomat. Drop your rolls of film off and pick up your photos a few days later. Magic!] ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Police in Louisiana were called to help round up a mystery emu spotted wandering the city streets. The Duson Police Department said on social media that officers responded Wednesday to help the Lafayette Animal Shelter & Care Center wrangle a loose emu. "Anyone missing an Emu? ID# 118962 found around the 300 block of B Robin in Duson," the shelter wrote on Facebook. "We don't know the sex. It's not housebroken. Someone please call us 337-291-5644 or come by to reclaim -- because our team and the dogs are very confused." China's Tiangong Space Station is currently occupied by a group of artificial embryos, marking a major step in the quest to understand the ins and outs of reproduction in space. And while none of the embryo-like structures will ever develop into an actual person, the experiment should at least provide us with new insights into the impact of microgravity on early human development. Previous research has shown that human, pig, and mouse sperm become disoriented in microgravity and are therefore less likely to be able to navigate the reproductive tract. A separate study found that jellyfish who spend their youth - or polyp stage - in space tend to experience vertigo when brought back to Earth, struggling to swim in a coherent manner. On the other hand, mouse sperm that was sent to the ISS has been successfully used to rear healthy pups on Earth, suggesting that exposure to cosmic radiation may not cause harmful levels of DNA damage. Mouse embryos were also seen to develop normally onboard the ISS for a period of four days, eventually becoming blastocysts - collections of cells that later develop into the fetus and placenta.I expect much related frivolity and observational humor in the comments. Do not disappoint me. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The ONT Fotomat staff will see all photos from rolls of film you drop off for development. The patron saint of firearms is Saint Gabriel Possenti. He is recognized for his exceptional marksmanship, which he demonstrated by disarming a gang of mercenaries and demonstrating his proficiency with a handgun. His story includes rescuing a young woman from rapists and successfully shooting a lizard with his gun, which led to the fear of the band of thugs and their retreat. Saint Gabriel Possenti is also celebrated for his role as a Passionist monk and was canonized in 1920.

Establishing permanent human colonies off Earth means gravity different from 1g, and reproducing in it. That is likely going to be a big problem. You can assume there's some tolerance there. We just don't how big that tolerance is. Ever biological process here has 1g has constant background given. And the evidence is that things just start going awry in something different from than 1g. Garbage Dinner of the Day (made to use up stuff I had on hand).
Mexican Mulligan 1 cup of brown rice (before cooking). I use brown rice because I have teh Diabeetus. White okay if you don't. Good slug of soy sauce (hey, this is a scientific recipe) Good slug of Worcestershire sauce 1 cup of frozen pepper strips 1.5 pounds hamburger, drained 1 packet Williams chili seasoning (you can use another brand if you wish, and I will explain why you are wrong...heh) 1 can red beans 1 can diced tomatoes Cook rice. When it's just about done, add the soy sauce, chili seasoning, and Wash-Your-Sister sauce. Stir well. Cook hamburger separately, OR used canned cooked ground beef (with fat removed) OR canned corned beef. In this case I had a can of cooked ground beef in the emergency stockpile that needed to be used up. Add meat, beans, and tomatoes. Simmer for 15-20 minutes at least. I used some torn-up pieces of whole wheat bread from the last batch I made in lieu of crackers. Pretty tasty. Way more than one person can eat at a sitting. The rest will go into freezer containers. Have to go get some grub, but wanted to continue (a bit) the 2A/AR discussion from last thread.
whig quoted Bruen thusly: "When the Second Amendment’s plain text covers an individual’s conduct, the Constitution presumptively protects that conduct. The government must then justify its regulation by demonstrating that it is consistent with the Nation’s historical tradition of firearm regulation." Herein lies, perhaps, what I think is the quintessential perversion and usurpation by the courts. That last sentence. If the "Nation’s historical tradition of firearm regulation" violates the 2A, it's OK? In fact it is the *basis* for ruling on the 2A? To use a legal academic expression, WTFF? So here's what the 2A *actually* says, I guess: A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed, excepting insofar as such infringement is consistent with the Nation’s historical tradition of firearm regulation. How am I wrong here? 2A is not a firm or clear limit on government, it's a suggestion? If courts and legislatures have infringed it "historically", well, they can do that. (cont.) wonder who the patron saint of firearms is.
Posted by: nerdygirl The patron saint of weapons and firearms is Saint Sebastian. He was a Roman soldier and Christian martyr (died around 288 AD) who was sentenced to be executed by being shot with arrows. Over time, his patronage extended to firearms and anyone who works with or depends on weapons (hunters, law enforcement, military personnel, gunsmiths, etc.). He is usually depicted tied to a tree or post, pierced with many arrows. Posted by: Tonypete at May 27, 2026 10:20 PM (440br) Posted by: San Franpsycho at May 27, 2026 10:20 PM (RIvkX) 103

This seems to capture perfectly the court's legislative power, which is limited only by previous laws or rulings, regardless of how aberrant or baseless they were. NOT by the constitution itself. As to all the other considerations, thanks for the commenters talking about them, I am aware of them. They can be summed up under "bad faith, lawless performance of duties" by the courts. Which has reached histrionic almost comical proportions, with the leaks in the abortion case and the gaming/delays of the VRA case. Anyway. Posted by: rhomboid at May 27, 2026 10:21 PM (U/Byj) 104

----- In Brussels (nowhere else!), queuing to pay at the supermarket; sees this: - A man in the queue; a little boy behind him plays with the baby cart and hits him repeatedly on the back of his heels - it hurts; the man tells the kid: "OK boy, be careful; it hurts." - The boy takes no heed and goes on, harder. — The man asks the mother: "Could you tell your boy to stop?" She replies: "Oh, I raise him to be a free person; I don't want to frustrate him." - Another man behind the mother carefully opens the shampoo bottle he was carrying and pours it on her head, saying: "Oh yes, my mom raised me like this too." - Then another lady, behind the shampoo man, hands him a small banknote, saying: "Take this — it's my share for the shampoo." > Yeah, Kodachrome was a different process. One attribute was better color, deeper saturation. Archival quality.
Posted by: Common Tater at May 27, 2026 10:17 PM (/0pJR) Yes. As far as archival quality goes, the main difference was that Kodachrome (Process K-14) was dyed during processing, rather than having the dyes put in the separate layers at the factory, as with Ektachrome/Fujichrome/Agfachrome/Process E-6 slide film (and Process C-41 color negative film). This meant that you could use Extreme Badass dyes rather than being limited to the pussboi dyes that would work in a so-called "integral tripack". Process K-14 was a Rube Goldberg procedure of diffusing a colored dye into the film, then diffusing it back out, carefully rexposing the film to light during processing through colored filters built in to the film stack, and about a million other steps. You needed trained chemists on staff to run a K-14 line. In practice, only Kodak itself and a few very large independent processors could afford to process it. E-6 and C-41 could be processed by local labs, or even at home if you were a careful worker. Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at May 27, 2026 10:28 PM (IG3/x) 136

JackStraw thanks, and I have been following the DOJ's new-found attention to constitutional rights including the Second.
Too meaty for an ONT but whig's cite from the Bruen decision contained, as I said above, what seemed a clear statement of the judicial derailment and usurpation. Not just the 2A, but across the board, and not just recently. If wildly unconstitutional laws were tolerated in the past, then they over-ride the constitution's clear language today. That's actually just part of the problem. Constitution was designed and intended to be amended as needed. In some ways it has been. But in wide critical areas it's simply ignored, or "interpreted" out of common sense existence, when the populace clearly would be opposed to amending it. The 2A gives no cover whatsoever to this horseshit, so it might be the purest example. Posted by: rhomboid at May 27, 2026 10:43 PM (U/Byj) 207

It's been amply demonstrated to all of us over the last decade that we have a huge problem in our legal system, largely our judiciary. They routinely ignore black letter law, overstep their authority and ignore precedent. And why not, there is no downside to going yolo. Why gold bars?
Well it is a currency par excellence. US Dollars aren’t as desirable by foreigners or foreign governments. Recall that when Obie paid off the Iranian mullahs, they wanted Swiss Francs and pallets of gold bullion. Stable. Not dollars. They take up a lot of room now, since $100 is the largest note, and barely buys a box of smokes. Sometimes you’ll take a slight discount if you want to convert into local currency, but recognized gold coins are universal money everywhere. Very convenient for spooks paying off informants, and paying in dollars or other currencies might result in very awkward questions. Just guessing, mostly. But I doubt I’m mistaken, because I’m not. Fiat 850 Spyder. The was also a rare hardtop called a 850 Racer and a neat little rust bucket coupe called the 850 GT. They were all based on the 850 sedan. Fiats of that Era were subject to the first recall for corrosion, so some models are quite scarce today.

Hard to find open details on specific targets in Kuwait, generally, during the ongoing unpleasantness. There were some hits on a hotel and their social security HQ high-rise during Round 1, which had video. But we've got significant resources/bases/personnel there. Ali as-Salem airbase being one, where most (I think) of our KIA to date have been.
So, among the sane, some rational targets in Kuwait. But you're dealing with the IRGC, or factions thereof, possibly, so sky's the limit. Posted by: rhomboid at May 27, 2026 11:15 PM (U/Byj) 300

Beaufort Castle (historic Crusader castle in southern Lebanon) reportedly hit by Israeli fire. After, reportedly, a lot of shelling of the area nearby.
Now, since we know the IDF is famous for just kind of shooting randomly, carpet bombing, spray-and-pray, and other primitive Third World military tactics, why would there be shelling of the area near the castle? Bueller? Oh, right. No, the IDF tries/usually succeeds in being so precise it's considered a demerit if a high-value target hit takes out anyone else at all. Poor Lebanon. There are reports of new late night/early morning (local time) military strikes by the US over Iran. The US military carried out new strikes inside Iran after intercepting multiple Iranian drones, according to Reuters. An American official said the targeted Iranian military site was assessed to pose a threat to both American forces and commercial shipping operating near the Strait of Hormuz.
Reuters further reported that the intercepted drones had been launched from Iran, marking another escalation in tensions as Washington moves to counter perceived threats to regional maritime traffic and its military presence. Just prior to this confirmation, CNN described mystery explosions along Iran's coast: Three explosions were heard to the east of Bandar Abbas, a strategic Iranian port city and naval base near the Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency reported in the early hours of Thursday. The blasts were reported at around 1:30 a.m. local time and caused the air defense systems of Bandar Abbas to be briefly activated, according to Fars, a media outlet with links to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The Soviets took the very first images of the far side of the Moon.
But they used American film! They had captured it from a crashed satellite or spy plane or somesuch. They couldn’t make film as thin as we could, or something like that. If I remember correctly they took the shots, developed the film on the satellite itself, and then slow scanned the images via radio to the ground. The earliest US spy satellites did a similar Rube Goldberg kind of thing, the film lacks being ejected by parachute and snatched up by airplanes. It was a big deal once they stopped using film. A lot of times, whatever they were trying to get intelligence on, the information was hopelessly stale or outdated by the time it had been retrieved, developed, and pored over by the spooks.
