As yours truly ages finely like a fine bottle of wine. I'm so happy to have The Fabulous at my side.

The warning signs have been there for decades. Back in 1983, American author Barbara Ehrenreich wrote a powerful book — The Hearts of Men: American Dreams and the Flight from Commitment — arguing that a male revolt was underway. Since the 1950s, she suggested, men had begun rebelling against the breadwinner ethic, inspired by Playboy culture, the counterculture and a desire for personal freedom. They were rejecting the cultural ideology that had shamed them into tying the knot and becoming a good provider, lest they be seen as immature, irresponsible and less than a real man.

Ehrenreich understood that marriage was the mechanism by which society harnessed male productivity. Remove the shame and the yoke comes off.

Forty years on, the yoke has disappeared. In April 2026, the American male labour force participation rate hit its lowest level since records began in the 1940s, according to the US Bureau of Labour Statistics. One in three American men — roughly 33% — were not working or actively looking for work. The overall male participation rate for men aged 16 and over stood at just 67%, down from 73.5% two decades ago and from 87% in the postwar years when Ehrenreich’s story begins.

The trend is not confined to America. Similar declines — though less dramatic than in the United States — have occurred in the UK, Australia and Canada.

The marriage collapse runs in lockstep with the workforce data. According to US Census Bureau data, married-couple households made up 71% of all US households in 1970; today it’s just 47%. As University of Virginia sociologist Brad Wilcox documents in his 2024 book Get Married, the marriage rate has fallen 65% in the last half century.

I wonder if the dog's name is Murphy? Genius Award Winner.

Shortly after noon on Saturday, officers with the Scottsbluff Police Department responded to Short Stop, located at 2002 Avenue I, after receiving a report that an individual had been shot by a BB gun. While officers were en route, updated information indicated that the incident involved a shotgun.

Upon arrival, officers located a truck with an attached camper. The passenger side door panel of the vehicle had sustained damage consistent with a shotgun blast.

Through the preliminary investigation, officers determined that the owner of the truck had pulled into the convenience store to purchase merchandise. While the passenger of the truck was standing near the front passenger side door, a dog in the back seat moved from one side of the vehicle to the other. During that movement, the dog triggered a shotgun that had a live shell in the chamber, causing the firearm to discharge.

Generally, your spouse had to give you permission to get a divorce. Or put another way, both parties had to agree. And apparently there was some sort of sketchy workaround, called a “Mexican divorce”, maybe they had a different take on it in Mexico.

51 Marriage was decidedly not some sort of patriarchal enslavement plot. It serves a function in society in the hopes of a stable community, among other things. It both intends to prevent females of the species from being left alone and unaided to raise children, and males from being forced to provide for children that aren’t theirs. Notice that both are a huge problem now, and “the state” is now Daddy Provider, meaning the taxpayer is on the hook for all the dysfunction that results.

The family of course is the basic building block of civilization, so it should he no surprise that it has been targeted for destruction by the usual suspects.

72 From last thread:
>> There is a little known reinforced underground concrete bunker at the 39A launch site or thereabouts. In theory the astronauts could have unassed the spacecraft in an emergency via a zip line and taken refuge there. They had survival supplies and such inside.

There were actually two different things. The zip line or slidewire system was added later. The first system installed from the beginning was the so-called "Rubber Room". This was a massive bunker under the pad designed to handle the full explosion of a Saturn V on the pad. Access was via a high speed elevator, into a long slide that led to a padded rubber landing pad which then led to a massive blast door to get inside the bunker.

The slidewire basket system was added later, being setup and tested somewhere around Apollo 9. That became the preferred on, although the rubber room was still available.

79 One in three American men — roughly 33% — were not working or actively looking for work.

A non-trivial amount of that is the fact that if you're white, male, and a US citizen you probably aren't getting any bites on your resume unless you say on it that you're gay. Insty had a thing earlier that 2/3rds of Silicon Valley jobs are held by foreigners, mostly Indian and Chi-Com.

87 Wishing for a pleasant, albeit solemn Memorial Day Monday.

My father used to display his father's flag on today & Veteran's day...

But my father has since passed. Eldest inherited the flag & prefers to keep it a tri-fold keepsake box.

88 Remembering 2LT William D White USCMR E CO, 2 BN, 7th Marines. KIA while fighting the enemy at "Outpost Vegas," South Korea on March 29, 1953. Born Teaneck, New Jersey, hometown Englewood, New Jersey.

Dad always talked about LT White. White and a visiting Major were KIA during a Chinese heavy mortar or artillery barrage. Dad went to render aid but there were very little remains of either.

He's intolerable. But he is the only one there who links to Ace, so I give him limited kudos. It may have been one of his links that first led me here 15+ years ago.

90 Ehrenreich was full of it. It's not men rejecting the role of men. It's women rejecting the role of men.

Just another haggard old boomer feminist who fucked up the world and then blamed the world for haggard old boomer feminist fuckups.

92 A non-trivial amount of that is the fact that if you're white, male, and a US citizen you probably aren't getting any bites on your resume unless you say on it that you're gay. Insty had a thing earlier that 2/3rds of Silicon Valley jobs are held by foreigners, mostly Indian and Chi-Com.

And if you're in the other 1/3rd, you work 24 hours a day to make up for the poor efforts of that 2/3rds, and have no time for marriage or kids. If you're lucky, you get the Elon Musk harem route.

93 That's lovely, Mis Hum. Quite a change in your style. I like the new MisHum.

94 Thank you Mike Hammer. I have been reading the posts on X of the names of our lost. I won’t forget, even if I never knew their names.

I read Insty, but it's now pretty bad among Reynolds, Driscoll and Green. As for their commenters, they make us look like a Louis XV salon.

97 SGT Albert Medas USMC KIA

(from my Dad's notebooks)

Sgt. Medas was wounded during the Vegas-Carson-Reno outpost battles at the end of March, 1953. I was also wounded during those actions and was evacuated to Yokuska Naval Hosp. During my recovery I saw Medas being wheeled through my ward. I hollered at him but he gave no response. He had suffered a grave head wound and had stroke-like symptoms. He did not recognize me. The orderly came over and asked if I knew him and I told him yes, he was in my outfit. The next day a nurse came to interview me concerning the Sgt. She told me he had lost his tags and ID during the battle or evacuation and arrived at the hospital listed as "unknown" as he could not identify himself.
Medas was one mean, tough Marine.

He never left the hospital. Medas DOW in September 1953.

98 "It's a crazy world at the gas station."

As I keep trying to say, maybe it wasn't such a great idea to destroy so much of the oil industry in the 20-teens; the oilfield in Louisiana was wrecked and what was left got buried by covid.

What is the law at Instapundit? Not to complain about another overlinked Driscoll post full of boring crap. Are we not MEN?
