The owner of a Minneapolis day care featured in a viral video by Nick Shirley exposing fraud has been federally charged with wire fraud and conspiracy for allegedly stealing over $4.6 million through false claims to federal nutrition and state childcare assistance programs.
Fahima Egeh Mahamud, CEO of Future Leaders Early Learning near George Floyd Square, is charged with falsely claiming to serve thousands of meals through Feeding our Future while defrauding Minnesota's Child Care Assistance Program.
The day care allegedly pocketed more than $4.6 million in fraudulent claims before closing in January following state investigations triggered by a viral Nick Shirley video in December.

David Strom links this embarrassing act of anti-journalism from CNN, in which an anti-journalist attempted to debunk a plainly true story by calling up the pirates and asking them "Are you doing a piracy?" When they said "no," CNN said "Ah-ha, we have disproven the racism!"

The CNN “reporter” on the phone in the hotel wasn’t even interested in the fraud — she was interested in investigating Nick Shirley and “his claims."

She was hoping to discredit Shirley. It was utterly pathetic.

2) Someone answers every call and returns every message.
3) If you are a prospective parent, and show up at the door, we'll let you in and give you a tour of the place. People film the tours all the time, to show to their husbands and relatives - where to place your kid is a big decision. It's how we get our new customers, since the kids constantly age out of the program.
4) we have all sorts of brochures to hand out to people interested in bringing their kids there.

The behavior of these people is NOT normal in any way. It doesn't even make business sense - why would you threaten visitors? Let them in and show them around. At most you might ask them not to film the children for privacy issues.

States can try by information--that is at a pretrial hearing, law enforcement and prosecutors state probable cause and provide enough information to the judge to meet that standard. Pretty quick.

All federal felony charges MUST by the Constitution go through the grand jury process for an indictment. States have the option of either but often choose to try by information as faster and cheaper.

The first takes the longest if the perps decide to cooperate, then it is much shorter. Lawyers for the defendants know that the feds don't take unwinnable cases to court and that conviction is 95 percent plus for the feds. So most defendants take pleas rather than fight it--and if you are taking a plea, why not shorten your sentence by ratting out others to make it shorter.

So the second, third, and subsequent indictments of others come faster as a result of the first scalp. And those defendants best have some other schmucks to turn in as the deals get stingier as time goes on. Best to throw yourself on the mercy of the courts because the Fed control over money information flows is damned good to the point that Fincen is a key weapon to fight terrorism and corruption. Follow the money.

I think Trump has already figured in that Congress is unlikely to do jack shit until after the primaries and elections this year. If all they do is vote through nominees, that is about par for the course in an election year for the best of presidents.

John Ringo's book The Last Centurion has a great explanation of high-trust vs low-trust cultures. Low-trust is basically "Are you family? No? Then fuck you." And there's a funny bit where he explains the relationship by looking at what happens when a hypothetical liberal ass-wipe from a high-trust culture loans his lawn mower to a low-trust dickhead. If he gets the mower back at all, it's returned with missing parts, totally inoperable and worn out because the guy who borrowed it used it to mow the whole neighborhood's lawns to make money.
