Oh no - PETA is upset

PETA Raises Concerns About Lopez's Preakness Ride; Laurel Stewards Reviewing Footage

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has raised concerns about the winning Preakness ride by Paco Lopez on Napoleon Solo, suggesting that Lopez raised his whip above his helmet on three different occasions before striking his horse, in violation of HISA regulations.

HISA announced Monday night that they were investigating the concerns.

“The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) is aware of the concerns raised regarding Paco Lopez's ride in the referenced race at Laurel Park,” the organization wrote in an email. “In accordance with the standard regulatory process, the Stewards at Laurel will review the race footage and all relevant facts to determine whether any action is warranted under HISA's riding crop rules. We will defer to the Stewards' independent review and adjudication process and will not comment further while that review is ongoing.”

Look, I'm not saying I don't care about the horsey. But I am saying PETA is asshoe.

Speaking of asshoe - the NAACP tries to stay relevant

NAACP calls for boycott of Southern college sports programs over voting rights

The NAACP and Congressional Black Caucus are calling on Black athletes and fans to boycott the athletic programs of public universities in states that are taking steps that the nation’s oldest civil rights group says are restricting Black voting rights.

Launched on Tuesday, the NAACP’s “Out of Bounds” campaign urges current and prospective Black athletes, their families, alumni and fans to “withhold athletic and financial support” from major public universities in states that “have moved to limit, weaken or erase Black voting representation.”

If Black athletes participate in the boycott, it could deplete rosters for powerhouse football and basketball programs across the Southeastern Conference and Atlantic Coast Conference.

The NAACP’s campaign calls out Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and South Carolina as states to boycott, arguing that the athletic programs of those states’ major universities are especially reliant on Black athletic talent and should protect Black political interests.

Sorry, NAACP - your race card is denied.

I will work tirelessly to free America from Israel's control. I will help build a left-wing, populist alternative that is completely free of Israel. If I'm backing someone, including a presidential candidate, that means I think they are actual Americans, and not servants of Israel.

Fight them on the left, fight them on the right, fight on the hills and on the beaches. But fight to help free your country. The politicians and the national media are on their side. But I think a united America can defeat the people in power and regain our freedom on our 250th Anniversary. I believe in America."

____________

There are people who were pushed into management positions but have no capacity for it. They would have been better left, without prejudice, doing their former jobs.

My own view is that managers should have three responsibilities.

- Try to understand what their subordinates do.
- Get them the resources to do their jobs.
- Defend them from upper management.

Something's working. I don't know if this California Community College was like this before, but now they can't say "Merit Based" enough in their Nursing Program description.

-----------------

Merit-based admission

All applicants must complete course requirements and meet the merit-based admission criteria to be eligible for enrollment in the Registered Nursing program.

The merit-based admission criteria are:

Overall grade point average (GPA)
Number of science repeats (Anatomy, Physiology, and Microbiology)
Merit-based admissions test
AHCRN* = 1.181 (overall GPA) + 0.160 (Merit-based Admission test) – 0.568 (Number of science repeats)

An applicant with more than four (4) repeats in the sciences (Anatomy, Physiology, and Microbiology) is not eligible to apply to the RN program.

The merit-based admission test ...

--------------

It goes on.

Being a college administrator is a pretty tough gig. The Chancellor and Provost are always breathing down your neck to get things done. Tenured faculty just ignore you. Students (and their parents) are always complaining about something or other. And you never have the resources or support to carry out your mission. The best you can do is coast until retirement.

We had a small aquarium in the boy's bathroom in FL (during the Chimp Era). The fish lived fairly long for fish with flouride. I noticed one day that the youngest had treated them with toothpaste smeared inside the glass.

He was fairly normal and a sweet boy, all things considered. He did get wild one weekend after bronchitis and nebulizer treatments that got him hyper. Of course the in-laws were visiting and I had to tell them he was not normally like this (doing laps around the house). The one weekend of insanity he picked when they were on a visit.

My nursing co-workers loved when they came because I was a wreak. MIL was always giving me household cleaning tips.We were once doing the dishes and she pulled up the rubber seal and said I needed to use an old toothbrush to scrub that (no idea). AND to get some yarn and wrap around a wire coathanger to get the dust off coils under the fridge. Which meant at one point that visit she was on all fours looking under my fridge.

180 (Cont MIL story from above)

I stopped being offended about MIL as the years went on and her neurosis about a spotless house, which I never had. She'd kick all 5 kids out and lock the door to clean and had white carpet when my husband was young.

After FIL died (whom I liked and would tell her to shut it) she was visiting in FL. Boys in college or old enough not to do stupid stuff. I was slugging a gin and tonic and watching her swim laps as I cooked and proud of our lovely and clean home. And how I'd managed not to flip her out that visit.

She came in and asked if I had any steel wool (no), or Ajax (no), and something else. Nope! Called her son and requested this without asking why.

She wanted to clean his grill AND scrub the BOTTOMS of the PVC pool furniture from scrapes of the pool deck. She saw this horror from the pool and looking for anything to clean.

I thought this was hilarious but did not laugh in front of her. Have at it! Clean everything!

Spinrad was just writing a Golden Age sci fi book, and had the rather arch opinion that era of science fiction was pretty fascistic. Which it was, the mindset was of a scientific or scientific minded elite guiding (or rescuing) the world to a better place. I have read a lot of really old stuff and that is about right for everything that wasn't just a Western book with rayguns.

In a way that was the major change that Campbell brought to Astounding, less trope, more science.

The whole thing had a lot of moving parts. Allen Dulles was stationed in Bern, and talking with high level party members who knew the war was lost by early ‘44. The “Unconditional Surrender” was a bit controversial at the time, for one thing it makes people fight to the last. Uncle Joe Stalin didn’t want any negotiated surrender with the West, and the Allies were prepared to let him get away with about anything, for cooperation in the Pacific war.

Posted by: "Perfessor" Squirrel

My experience over the years with academic deans and assistant deans, provosts, etc. were not very positive from an administrative standpoint. Too worried about either a) building a resume to bounce somewhere else, b) always worried about raising funds that never somehow trickled down to the academic departments, and c) currying favor with some chosen faculty members.

None of them were concerned much at my school with educating students, just in avoiding student complaints and reputation loss on their watch. A true STEM college might be different but ours was a large institution by the time I left. As in tens of thousands of students which in turn created a bureaucratic nightmare. Wasn't that way when I started.

Saudi Arabia and other Gulf States are getting involved. I think the problem with getting that dust is risking a lot of American lives and a possible debacle if boots are on the ground. Easier to simply let Iran's petroleum industry shut down bit by bit until no money is left to pay for the IRGC lower ranks.

The Kurds in Northern Iran, as he repeatedly has said, took the weapons and starlink terminals that were supposed to be provided to the resistance--some they sold, some they kept. Frankly asshole behavior.

Sometimes the best of all strategies is to simply wait it out. Not the most political, but the least casualties, least blowback, etc.

Hers or mine? She, for sure, had major OCD. MAJOR.After a huge family dinner she and her two daughters were like machines and would wash everything including pans, dry and put away.

I'm laid back with parties, dinners, and daily life. Not a hoarder. Not filthy with crunchy floors or nasty rooms, but not even close to OCD about anything. Clean enough is my motto.

If I have a big dinner party I will clear the table, throw stuff in the dishwasher and soak pans, etc. Wash china/crystal the next day.

Granted, she put china and crystal in the dishwasher, which is a sin in the South. So maybe I'm the screwed up one.

After a surgery I took care of her for one hell week. She'd fret from bed. Closet needed cleaning (looked fine to me but I did it).

My husband married the opposite of her. And may wish now I was more neurotic but too late now, dude.

That MIGHT'VE skewed the youth vote toward Massie to some extent. It didn't seem to me that there were any hot DEM primaries in KY, but I didn't study up on it. Could be wrong.

250 233 >>>But 55+ was very anti-Massie. About +30 for Gallrein overall, with 65-75 at +35.

An epic battle of generations. And older people vote at higher rates. So even though younger voters skewed much more heavily Massie there weren’t as many of them as older voters.

But 10 years from now, this same race is won by Massie easily as the biggest group of support for Massie will be much smaller

The GOP will be a much different party in the not too distant future if these trends continue.

That was a partially online 'interactive' poll. Thus crap. I think I'll wait for a poll with better methodology as internet based 'invite' polling and open polling produces stupidly bad results.

The problem with polling is Random Digit Dialing is dead because a lot of people no longer pick up the phone for anonymous calls, going door to door is too expensive for media polls, and using the internet to email invites and using texts produces really bad samples of convenience, not random at all.

I started listening to them around the sin after sin album. I never listened to lyrics much because my job was the guitar so I was focused on that, but after a while and an album or so later learning their stuff became second nature and I didn't have to focus as much, and by that time I was jamming with other people. It was around the british steel album I was in a band that was actually playing out, and by then I started hearing the lyrics with a singer physically in the room, and I really started hearing it. I was like hmmm, this isn't right. lol

257 I've been slowly easing back into hiking. It feels good to be back on the trails. Yesterday evening I was part of a group hiking in the Saddleback 'Wilderness'. It was a short 3.5 miles in a little over an hour, with only about 200' of elevation gain. It was Wilderness in name only, most of the time we could hear the cars on Santiago Canyon Road.

Today I had lunch with a group of former colleagues from work. Most retired, some still working. For a couple of hours the years melted away and we were laughing and talking just like when we were supposed to be working....

Looking at actual results, Gallrein won 14 out of 16 counties by substantial margins. He did not win the more urban county or Massie's home county but did respectably.

And Kentucky has closed party primaries that require party switchers to do so at least 28 days in advance or new registrants to do the same. So no last minute surge of new voters or party switchers to save Massie.

265 Right now, I see a divergence in yutes--those that are college track are probably distinct from those working or seeking jobs that do not require a college degree. I think due to the disappearance of illegals in a lot of places, jobs are opening up in construction, restaurants, etc., probably now truck driving, and so on.

Those college bound or in college are scared to death of outsourcing and H1Bs as well as AI taking or preventing them from getting good jobs in the future. And if they are male, they have been shit on in their education throughout the years. I don't think they see Trump as helping them much as it is taking time to kill DEI, decrease H1Bs, spin up new industries, and the question whether AI is going to kill the white collar middle class jobs is up for grabs.

Planning takes months, they had to continue with all the logistics and everything that entails, and not place hopes in a secret weapon that hadn’t been proved out yet.

My uncle was in the ETO and said the boys were not happy with the idea of being redeployed to the Pacific. They believed they had done their part, and it was time to go home. There was even some talk about going Awol. But a million troops is a lot of guys, they gotta come from somewhere.

I simply do not know. North Carolina is an odd state and even former popular Dem governors have gotten defeated by the right candidate and that was running against Jesse Helms. Dunno if Whatley is that right candidate or not.

277 My honest estimation is that not using A-bombs on Japan would have lead to the total destruction of Japan. If we would have stayed our hand and proceeded with Operation Olympic and Operation Coronet, we would have incurred a million casualties, but at the cost of the lives of twenty million Japanese men, women, and children. Remember, the Japanese brass wanted to give children sharpened bamboo poles to hold off invading forces. Japan as a nation would not have recovered from a loss of that magnitude. It would have become something else, something no longer Japanese. Just my opinion.
