British Naval historian Drachinifel did a great video on the early WW II torpedo issue. Fascinating what Adm King had to go through to get to the bottom of it and get it fixed. Bad design, no actual practice with them and ass covering by the BUORD. Before the war it was a court martial offense if a captain fired and lost a torpedo. No explosives were aboard them so they could be recovered.

Posted by: BarelyScaryMary Consider some aftermarket sights. They may require some professional fitting as I don't know offhand about what is out there for Henry rifles. Open sights that are mounted in front of the receiver (usually on the barrel) are not useful unless you have good eyes and plan to track your target. Peep sights aka aperture sights are far more accurate for most as they are mounted closer to the eyes. Red dot, prism sights, and scopes, are usually even more accurate and red dot/prisms are probably the fastest for most people to acquire a target and shoot it at reasonable ranges. Posted by: Duncanthrax at May 17, 2026 07:01 PM (0sNs1) I think the videos are more applicable to the Mark 15's carried aboard most USN destroyers, save the WWI era "four pipers" of the Wickes and Clemson classes. Although not as well known as the infamous Mark 14, the Mark 15 was also plagued by problems in the first year of WWII, suffering from duds, going off course, and poor doctrine of use. Not until 1943 did the Mark 15 team up with radar fire control to become a serious threat to the IJN in the Solomons through the battles of Leyte Gulf. Range Report:
Beautiful day in Northern NJ. Took the rifle to the range to zero the scope. Last time I went things were all wobbly. Got a new bipod that made a load of difference and a different bag for the rear. The first 10 shots were at a steel target at 100 yards. Shot at that and noticed where the bullets impacted on the berm and dialed it until I was hitting the steel. That was about 10 shots. Set the target at the 50 yard line, aimed at the bottom left of the lower target and pulled the trigger. Through the scope I saw on the target it was 2 MOA high and 1.25 MOA right. Made adjustment and 2nd shot was .25 MOA lower and further right another MOA. HUH?? Figured out I was stupid and turned the turret the wrong way. 3rd shot was directly below the 1st but elevation was spot on. 4th shot was a flier .5 MOA right of 3rd shot. 5th shot was in the bulls eye. The next 5 rounds were all within 1.5 MOA of each other on the bulls eye. Took the target out to 100 yards. The 1st shot was 2 MOA above the center. The next 4 shots were lined up with a 1 MOA group in the bulls eye. The next 2 shot groups were all perfect on elevation and all within 1MOA. A damn good day. Torpedos cost $10,000 a piece - in 1935 dollars. You could buy a decent house for about $5,000.
Consequently the Navy decided they didn’t really need to test them. Or they didn’t want to anyhow. They had more than one factor or problem causing the frustration. Some skippers discovered that a glancing blow on the target, at an angle, non-intuitively resulted in a better chance of detonation than a dead on straight 90 deg. hit. The magnetic trigger or whatever was pretty unreliable from what I read, and the torpedos wouldn’t run at the depth they were set at. They DID have also a disconcerting habit of circling back around and hitting the boat. Of course, those probably always detonated reliably. I think the Tang was lost with all hands because of this “feature”. Posted by: Common Tater at May 17, 2026 07:23 PM (tM8U8) 26

Posted by: Winston AKA Pops at May 17, 2026 07:12 PM (rFtAF) Clayton Blair's classic "Silent Victory" remains the definitive account of just how frustrating the Mark 14's problems were for the submariners in COMSUBPAC. The official USN submarine force history (mostly written by COMSUBPAC operations officer Rear Admiral Richard Voge in 1945-46) and approved by Vice Admiral Charles Lockwood, COMSUBPAC, is quite candid about the extent of the Mark 14's problems. Blair's book includes declassified material from the 1970s that Voge's official history could not, such as codebreaking. Posted by: Ed L at May 17, 2026 07:23 PM (BCwQW) 28

Posted by: whig at May 17, 2026 07:15 PM (E4rtv) The barge busting missions PT boats were assigned in the Solomons made their torpedoes useless because the barges had too shallow a draft for the torpedoes to hit them. Since there was a shortage of torpedoes (both the WWI era Mark 8 the PTs originally carried, and the Mark 13, which was the primary weapon of the TBF Avenger), no one complained when the PT sailors began rearming their craft with 20mm and 40mm cannons instead of torpedoes. I’ve told this story before, but my Dad was a radar operator on a Diesel boat. He knew nothing about torpedos, other than his bunk was on top of one, and you’d get Cosmoline all over your stuff if not careful.
Anyway, he got tasked to “help” a torpedoman ready a torpedo for the next day’s special op where a bunch of brass on another boat was observing while they shot at a target. He said they worked all throughout the night. And then when the big moment arrived, it was a Dud. Oops. He said he put his hands in his pockets - and there was a bunch of parts left over from the all nighter. Little gears and springs and doo dads. He said he was never so scared in his life, and threw them over the side. LOL Posted by: Common Tater at May 17, 2026 07:30 PM (tM8U8) 39

I don't mind (and have several brushed stainless firearms but they have a matte finish). Ditto for modern electroless nickel finishes.
But Glock's and S&W's tennifer and melonite nitrided steel finishes are tough to beat for longevity. Holsters and carry beats up regular bluing over time and it is not particularly sweat/salt resistant for people living in hot humid climates or around sea coasts. Posted by: Common Tater at May 17, 2026 07:23 PM (tM8U In "Silent Victory," Clayton Blair writes that BUORD wrote a user manual for the Mark 14 torpedo and immediately proceeded to classify it as top secret in the 1930s. The upshot was that the torpedomen on the subs didn't even have a user manual for their torpedoes because the only copy was locked in the secure document vault in Newport, RI. No wonder no one knew what was going on with the Mark 14 in 1941-42 in COMSUBPAC. Posted by: Ed L at May 17, 2026 07:38 PM (BCwQW) 60

Good evening fellow enthusiasts.
Range report: Another great outing by the DMVMGC. Guess what? I finally cleaned the Glock and it worked perfectly! I had couple of jams but more due to adjusting trigger pull. Really fabulous to have shooting buddies who can tell if it is the ammo, the gun or just human needed adjustment. The best part was getting to shoot Sra Blaster's Kimber CDs9.. It just feels right. That is why I got so pissed at Obama when 22 LR suddenly became unavailable with panic buying and hoarding when that jughead kept trying to create unconstitutional workarounds for his peeps and the ATF. I ended up buying some old 32 S&W Long revolvers so I could reload and fire light recoiling firearms at times. 22 LR revolvers, especially snubbies, have a heavier trigger pull than centerfire revolvers because of the need to hit the rim of the cartridge to set them off. MP5s are at the top of the heap for Class III firearms because 1) they're pretty modular, 2) OEM and aftermarket parts and accessories are readily available, and 3) even the Class III versions are out there in decent numbers (relatively speaking). But if the fun switch version is out of reach, the semi-auto version is still a lot of fun suppressed. Even the H&K semi-auto SP5 can be had for about 5% of the Class III version. On deflagerating powder, you can burn it and it burns hot and fast. But unless contained in an airtight container, it won't explode. There is a reason it is kept in plastic containers nowadays as those are designed to pop off when the pressure gets too high.
BP can and does explode to the degree it was used in mining until they came up with nitroglycerine and then dynamite. Smokeless is also less, but not perfectly so, likely to suddenly catch fire from static electricity sparks. If you do have old smokeless powder around or inherit mystery powder, it is actually excellent nitrogen for plants and you can water it in for them. My grandfather worked at the Goat Island facility, usually called the torpedo station or torpedo factory. He was a master tool maker and helped design and build the tools needed to make the weapons, many of which were new. From what he mentioned to us grandkids, what began as a sloppy operation due to neglect between the wars quickly became an effective operation as the need for more and better weapons grew. He was proud of that. Gramps wasn't soft spoken and I suspect the words he used talking to adults about it were softened for us youngsters. Posted by: JTB at May 17, 2026 08:10 PM (yTvNw) 113

About black powder. Yep, it's an explosive. If you remember the Spy vs Spy cartoons in Mad Magazine, the bombs looked like canon balls with a fuse sticking out. Those would use black powder. Modern powders burn rather than explode but have to be contained in a case sealed with a bullet. The burning creates pressure that forces the bullet through the barrel. (Sorry if this is too elementary.) You can pour some modern powder in a clear area, not contained, light it and it will just burn, not blow up.

70 ... "You can usually smell someone that has been firing blackpowder before you see them."
Whig, That made me laugh and it's sort of true. The 'perfume' of shooting black powder does tend to remain for a while. On a calm, humid day the aroma can really stick around. Posted by: JTB at May 17, 2026 08:53 PM (yTvNw) 136

The re-enactor crowd call it “Holy Black” and they generally dislike Pyrodex as it manages to smell worse, more corrosive, and a bit harder to light off.
BP has different HazMat requirements. That’s why it is no longer on the shelf, rather stored in a magazine, all by itself. Consequently it is not as available as it once was, and has insurance associated with it. Thus the Ersatz substitute powders. Posted by: Common Tater at May 17, 2026 08:59 PM (Snw0w) 139
Did hit the range alone.
Nothing fancy, just some PSA Dagger drills. I really need to pick a handgun and focus on it. Seriously. I see again that minor handgun differences mean different points of impact. Oh well. Not much chance of me settling down as I go between loving the accuracy of the CZ P-07 and preferring striker fired fire control units. And that's just me narrowing things to G19-sized pistols.... sra blaster had a migraine and vertigo today not a good combo for shooting. But I took her Kimber CDS9 today to see if I could fix its troubling tendency to not go fully into battery. I had SWA shoot it because it would do it every time for her.
And sure enough it did. I LIBERALLY applied Hoppes lube to it. Literally dripping wet. That took care of it. Anyone who knows sra blaster knows she laughs hard that it has to be lubed up. Posted by: blaster - Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat at May 17, 2026 09:04 PM (NlEaG) 142
Jeez.
A bit off topic but just watched the vid of the two F-18s colliding. Ejecting inverted has to suck. At least on a tank you just have to jump off. Posted by: Diogenes ----- The top jet came in from behind, then pancaked on top of the other plane, then they got stuck together, like the time my friends (male) dog jumped our fence into the neighbor's yard where their bitch was (and in heat). The top plane was impaled on one of the twin tails of the lower. If that had occurred with F-16s, the bottom pilot would be dead, but because they were F-18 Super Hornets the two tails are offset from the centerline, so that the lower plane's canopy was clear. When I saw the 4 chutes, it gave me permission to be a smartass. "Well, there goes some poor Somali's chance to be a success story as another immigrant millionaire, crashing a couple of hundred million bucks that could have gone to a leading center", I said. This has to embarrassing for the Navy. In front of a crowd at an AIR FORCE base. Posted by: buddhaha at May 17, 2026 09:08 PM (Ffkme) 143

So... Capricorn One.
Elliot Gould and James Brolin star. Best known today as being a moon-landing skeptic movie and for posting OJ Simpson on the credits. Da Juice plays a crewmate of Brolin (and of Sam Waterston), and puts in a good acting performance... but he's just there to die. Like Waterston dies. 1969 tech wasn't there to fake a moon landing; but mid-1970s was arguably there, and that's the valley Capricorn One flies through. Independence Day owes much to this movie. The paranoid style, and the ending scene where Gould and Brolin have to flee the deep-state agents sent to cover up the plot.
