Music Thread: Culture Club? Seriously?

Boy George and Culture Club were not on my playlists when they were big, and they aren't now. Except...politics has destroyed my naiveté when it comes to entertainers, so I am in the unpleasant position of minimizing my consumption of certain people's work if they are vociferous in shoving their personal politics in my face. And the converse applies too.

Here is Boy George talking about Jews and Jewish friends. Is he a deep thinker? Uh...no. Clearly not. But he is clear in his rejection of antisemitism, and for that I respect him, and will consume his musical product. Just a little bit though; I am not going to become a born-again 1980s British (or any other) Pop Music aficionado. But I will put him on a playlist or two, and toss him a few ~~cents~~ pence.

Wanted to get a recording of Birgit Nilsson singing the Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde, having been driven nuts by Bernstein's ludicrously sluggish tempo with Behrens. The one with Böhm was too fast, the one with Ludwig too slow and I finally settled on the one with Knappertsbusch.

Nilsson - in my opinion the only good thing to come from Sweden - had a huge voice that cut like diamond, like the Ethel Merman of opera. She was pretty down to earth. She was born on a farm and milked cows the morning of her first audition. She married a vet and they were together for 59 years.

Nilsson and Karajan worked together but didn't like each other much. She wore a miner's helmet with wings to a typically underlit Karajan production of Die Walküre. She responded to his detailed telegram of suggestions with "Busy. Birgit." In turn, Karajan said she could perform Scarpia without makeup.

They don't make them like that anymore.

He even got sued by Dave Geffen, for not putting out an album that was … I guess it wasn’t like Harvest or whatever. Geff said he needed to put out a “Rock and Roll” album at least.

So Neil formed the Pink Cadillacs or whatever, and put out an album of 1950s doo-wop stuff, kinda. That really pissed everyone off.

You might remember “Wonderin’” from 1980s MTV. Actually a tune he had written and recorded many times back in the 60s, revamped for the 80s skinny ties and short hair crowd.

He’s kind of a flake sometimes and his politics is out there, but I like his attitude generally. He screwed over his bandmates one too many times, however.

Favorite thing about this one: MiladyJo was in a recording studio in Chicago in Spring, 2001, and recorded this song. Afterward, a woman there came up to her and said, admiringly, "I haven't heard that in years. I love that song!" She had taken it to be an "old standard" of some sort. Ha! Margie was there and we were sort of talking when the needle slammed into the first beat of "Pump It Up". We both started dancing, and cranked it up. We adjourned into the hallway later grabbed the floor and spent the rest of the time talking and laughing. She lived across town, went to a rival school, but I got her number anyway. Jeanne and Paul were amazed, since I was a true hippie geek...and I didn't have a car. Which reduced my real chances with her to a single date and a bit of necking.

I wonder if she even remembers that party....

Some tunes are really fun to play on guitar, for some reason. That is one of them. She was a good guitarist, actually. Made use of alternate tunings in a big way, mainly because standard tuning chords are hard to finger and can be painful, she had a case of Polio growing up so she focused on open tunings. She came up with a kind of unique tuning nomenclature to make it easy to switch around tunings. And … she’s a lunatic politically, most likely.

You have to see them on You Tube to get the full effect which is they sound EXACTLY like Blink 182 type music, like perfectly....but they all look like they are in De La Soul. 218 Never understood the appeal of the Dropkick Murphys. Musically they just add a banjo and accordion and yell in a crappy parody of a Ben Affleck south Boston accent and call it "Celtic". As Olson Johnson said "We don't want the Irish!" The fact that they're pretentious assholes just add (or subtracts?) from any appeal they might have had.
