Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Morning Rant: Thune Needs To Go!![]() Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., said Tuesday “We don’t have the votes to get rid of the filibuster” as his defense for why he won’t get the SAVE America Act passed. Lucky for Thune, he doesn’t need to “get rid of the filibuster” to pass the SAVE America Act, but he already knows that — he just doesn’t want to pass the legislation at all. If the good people of South Dakota approve of this clown's transparent attempt to supplant a wildly popular bill with his own belief in the correctness of our obviously broken voting systems, then perhaps it is time to revoke its statehood. But my guess is that the people who voted for him are just as disappointed. Cui Bono? Who benefits from our country's slide into 3rd world sh*thole status, courtesy of illegal voting? The Democrat junta obviously. But why would Thune support the continuation of this destruction of our constitutional republic and its conversion into a majority-rule "democracy" without any of the checks and balances that have defended our freedoms for 250 years? Is it as simple as Thune's desire for the status quo, which makes his life quite easy, but will ultimately destroy our republic? If so, he might be even sleazier and amoral than the typical senator, and that is saying a lot. PS. Thune’s public refusal to do anything with the SAVE act helps cover his refusal to promote any presidential appointments, most egregiously is Thune ensuring these appointments can’t be made in recess. This should be a much bigger deal than it is, I think. There’s no functional difference between a Thune or a Schumer majority leadership.

In selecting an appropriate visual symbol of the Senate in its founding period, one might consider an anchor, a fence, or a saucer. Writing to Thomas Jefferson, who had been out of the country during the Constitutional Convention, James Madison explained that the Constitution's framers considered the Senate to be the great "anchor" of the government. To the framers themselves, Madison explained that the Senate would be a "necessary fence" against the "fickleness and passion" that tended to influence the attitudes of the general public and members of the House of Representatives. George Washington is said to have told Jefferson that the framers had created the Senate to "cool" House legislation just as a saucer was used to cool hot tea. I've said it before but having worked there, Senators are lazy sacks of shit. All of them.
They don't write legislation, they don't have spirited debates, and they spend as little time in the Senate chamber as possible. It's 6-year job security and they simply don't give a fuck to do anything other than fundraise and eat nice meals and get drunk with their colleagues and the lobbyists buying the drinks. Doing real, actual work is foreign to most of them because a lot of them haven't had an actual job in 30+ years, if ever. Especially once you get into leadership like Thune, you know you're on easy street until you finally decide to retire much too late (Mitch) or just drop dead while in office, so you have even less incentive to do anything more than jack shit. Posted by: gKWVE at May 14, 2026 11:53 AM (KAw7u) People say things but... No, the Vice President cannot declare the Senate to be in recess. The authority to recess the Senate lies with the Senate itself, typically exercised by unanimous consent or a majority vote, not with the Vice President. While the Vice President serves as the President of the Senate and presides over its sessions, their role is largely ceremonial in day-to-day operations. Senate rules and precedents establish that decisions about adjournment or recess are made by the body through unanimous consent or formal motion. Some sources clarify that the Vice President, as Presiding Officer, can influence legislative timing post-cloture but this does not extend to declaring a recess. The Senate’s ability to control its own proceedings is protected under Article I, Section 5 of the Constitution, which grants each chamber the power to determine its rules and adjournments. Aye. 👍
In South Dakota state politics, Senator John Thune has traditionally maintained a policy of public neutrality in intra-party primary matchups, choosing instead to focus his political support on local defense, agricultural infrastructure, and law enforcement groups. (AI Overview) And this appears to be the last Senate press release Thune/his office posted that discusses the SAVE Act: Recent Press Releases, Thune on DHS Funding and SAVE America Act Progress “[H]opefully we’ll have cooperation from Democrats to end the government shutdown.” March 24, 2026 In part, “Overwhelming support for the SAVE America Act, the Democrats said – Chuck Schumer said out here last week – that they support voter ID. Well, we’re going to give them an opportunity to evidence that by putting it up for a vote. Later, I’ll be filing an amendment that would require photo ID, and we’ll see what the Democrats do." --- Fooled again? Nah. He knows the dems would likely take photo i.d. but they can often be obtained through state Department of Motor Vehicles, or equivalent commissions or agencies, without verification of birth & U.S. citizenship. And appeal to LIV moderate Dems to do the same. Invite a short list of MAGA friendly Republicans to the Party. Explicitly banish any unnamed elected Republican to the outer reaches, never to be acknowledged as a human being, let alone a candidate. Trump did the smart thing, using the name and legacy of the existing party. Same thing the commies have done with both parties.
Any new party immediately gets banned from everything for racism or whatever. Even if it doesn't get banned which it will if it gets remotely viable, it gets branded by the media and fake viral SNL and once that happens forget it. And even if the best happens and it becomes viable you have one or more cycles like what's going on in UK where it merely splits the right and leaves a weakened left still hanging on by default. Think a lot of this voter ID debate comes down to word play and/or interpretation.
Here's wacko Pennsylvania's current system, in brief: Voters generally do not need to provide ID unless they are voting in a district for the first time. Under the SAVE Act, a Pennsylvania driver’s license (including a REAL ID) would no longer suffice on its own to register to vote, as these IDs do not legally prove U.S. citizenship. Citizens would need an ORIGINAL birth certificate or U.S. passport to register. Civic organizations urge rejection of the bill, warning that requiring in-person documentary proof of citizenship would dismantle Pennsylvania’s popular online voter registration program used by millions. It also doesn't want to use a fed data base to id non-citizens on voting lists. -------- Original birth certificates stay in government vaults. A passport or RealID, requires a CERTIFIED birth certificate. That is an official, state-issued copy of that record. It bears an embossed or raised state seal and an authorized signature, and it is the only version accepted for legal purposes like passports, driver's licenses, and employment. See usa dot job/birth certificate. Posted by: L - No nic, another fine day at May 14, 2026 12:47 PM (NFX2v) 125
