Wednesday Night ONT - May 6, 2026 [TRex]

St-Bartholomew-Konigssee.jpg

Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans. The bar is open.

Welcome to the Wednesday night ONT which means another edition of random overnight fun and games. Pull up a chair and sit a spell. Good will offerings of amusing puns are happily accepted. Pants are optional. Be nice to your fellow commenters and AoS contributors. This is a Tucker, Candace and Megyn free zone. Please.

Will you be smarter after reading this ONT? Will you be better looking? Will you be more fun at parties? Will you lose weight? Will you be wealthier? Will you be more fashionable? If you skip the content, you'll never know!

Secret Service agent: "Sir, I KNOW it is time for the Wednesday ONT. I AM hitting refresh!"

Pete Hesgeth thinking "We have all this military technology, but we're never fast enough to post first! How do they do it?"

JD Vance thinking "I want to see why tankdemon is late again."

Marco Rubio thinking "I'm just glad that nobody asked me to write the ONT."

The collapse of teen fertility in the digital era

Teen fertility collapsed globally starting around 2007. This affected countries across the income and policy spectrum. This paper argues that smartphones changed how teens spend time with each other, and that this change in turn drove the collapse in teen fertility. Once enough teens are on the phone, being on the phone is where the peer network is; in-person time falls sharply, and with it the unstructured contact in which most unintended teen conceptions occur.

The model predicts that the shift towards the phone-mediated equilibrium affects multiple aspects of teen behavior. The same instrument that produces a collapse in teen fertility produces a surge in teen suicides.

Yikes. Isn't there a happy medium somewhere?

Starting in the 80s, pop culture began to disparage and ridicule virginity. It went from being a virtue to carrying a stigma.

The term "incel" is the final form of this Satanic invocation. It posits that the worst thing in the world to is lust and be incapable of acting upon it.

Ironically, the people who seem to invoke it the most are usually dedicated Onanists.

——

Publius - the Apollo crews were scheduled by Donald “Deke” Slayton, head of the astronaut office. I’m sure you know the basic rotation scheme he had set down. But it sure got screwed around a lot, and swapped around, as personnel got killed, injuries, mission changes etc. What I’m getting at, the crews that were assigned weren’t too sure who would get what mission, it was all very tentative and subject to change, so I’m not sure it’s possible to even say Armstrong was specifically “picked” to be the first lunar commander based on his Mad Skilz. It’s just the way it all shook out after years of shuffles, sometimes due to tragic events like Charlie Bassett and Elliot See auguring in, etc. The truth is, I think, any of the crews could have accomplished any of the missions. It was certainly a team effort par excellance with all those guys in mission control and basically every contractor and subcontractor on call for support. MIT and IBM and a gazillion others.

161 I stopped wearing white socks years ago. I mostly have black or gray ankle socks, but have a few pair of festive dress socks. At my son's wedding I wore my suit and calf-length Mystery Science Theater socks. Son, his bride, and friends approved. A bit of whimsy.

I also have some Looney Tunes socks.

I'm not sure how accurate it is. I-95 in south Florida was not complete until the 1980's.There was a gap between WPB and Boca Raton until the 1970's and the portion between WPB and Fort Pierce wasn't completed until the late 1980's or 1990's. Even today, the portion between WPB and Fort Pierce veers sharply inland due to some agreement dating back to the 1950's that no competing road would be built east of the turnpike.

181 Ted Turner spoke at my college once. This was late 80's when he was colorizing all those black and white movies. Some whiny student went up during the Q&A and asked him 'how dare you'? Ted said that first of all, they only colorize a copy of the film, not the original. "Second, there's this little know on your TV that you can use to adjust I to black and white. The kid looked and surely felt like a complete idiot.

At another point Turner tried to deflect some quip by saying "Hey, I ain't Ivan Boesky." Unfortunately, Boesky's daughter went to my school. She stormed out of the auditorium.

Turner was entertaining.
