The Morning Report — 5/ 4/26

GrouchyKarl.jpg

Good morning kids. Sad to have to kick off a new week and fist full week of May with this troubling news:

“Mayor Rudy Giuliani is currently in the hospital, where he remains in critical but stable condition, the spokesperson said in a statement. “Mayor Giuliani is a fighter who has faced every challenge in his life with unwavering strength, and he’s fighting with that same level of strength as we speak. We do ask that you join us in prayer for America’s Mayor – Rudy Giuliani.” It’s unclear what ailment the 81-year-old ex-mayor and former Trump attorney is being treated for while in the care of a Florida hospital.

Considering who and what is occupying City Hall these days the parallels and metaphors are in your face self-evident.

New Yorkers, you’ve been slacking — so the mayor wants to organize you. Mayor Zohran Mamdani isn’t happy that only 400 people showed up to last year’s Rent Guidelines Board hearings. In response, last Wednesday, he launched Organize NYC, a supposed volunteer effort to have New Yorkers participate in local government... Taken straight from the Democratic Socialists of America’s community-organizing playbook, Mamdani is calling it “a long-term initiative to bring mass public participation into the work of governing.”

Don’t be fooled. Organize NYC is a thinly veiled, taxpayer-funded effort to embed campaign-style political organizing inside city government, dress it up as civic virtue and deliver Mamdani’s campaign promise under a veneer of official neutrality.

Having been born and raised in New York, and coming of age during bad old days of grime and crime in the 60s and 70s, the Giuliani years were absolutely miraculous both in terms of making it America's nd arguably the world's premier city and a truly great place to live. Considering the city's long-standing status as a Democrat/Liberal if not necessarily hardcore leftist bastion (a few isolated pockets and a couple college campuses notwithstanding) Rudy's election and incredible success was somewhat miraculous all things considered, and a perpetually uktra-liberal/leftist city council underscores that.

And so when NYC was on life support it rebounded spectacularly. Perhaps both Rudy and the city itself can one day come back once again. Momdani is going to lay waste to Gotham, but this time around will there be an electorate that rises up to elect another Rudy or are the younger generations so brainwashed and self-absorbed as to make that utterly impossible. I fear that to be the case since as the saner/older cohort of the baby boomers pass away leaving nothing but the younger generations who have no real collective memory nor desire for America as founded and sane Western Judeo/Christian values, since they were barely if at all taught and raised with them.

From this we go to the alleged deathbed "confession" if you will of someone who is a complete polar opposite of Rudy Giuliani:

Former Rep. Barney Frank spent decades as one of the Democrat Party’s most recognizable left-wing figures. Now, in what may be one of his final public warnings, he is telling Democrats that their loudest activists have pushed the party into territory the public simply is not buying. Frank’s warning, delivered as he enters hospice, is blunt. He is not attacking the left from the right. He is saying the left has made a strategic mess of things by turning its most controversial causes into purity tests and then acting surprised when voters balk. . . That is a polite Washington way of saying the fringe has taken over the message and made the party look reckless. Frank also sees a broader pattern in Democrat politics, one that should worry anyone who thinks slogans are a substitute for results. By his telling, too many Democrats have fallen in love with whatever the current thing is, regardless of how radical it is.

Well, as we have seen when (or if) voters balk then the Democrats wield molotov cocktails and rent-a-mobs along with assassins. Funny how he's complaining about the very thing that allowed him to be elected in the first place. In a way perhaps there is a sea change taking place insofar as the DOnald Trump MAGA revolution could not have taken place were it not for the utter disasters engendered by Clinton(s), and the Bushes and GOP-e are in the mix here, make no mistake, and then of course the insanity of Obama and Biden. Nixon's silent or not-so-silent anymore majority must still exist at least to a level that keeps things in check, but how long will that last and will the Socialist-loving Yoots take over the asylum or will America, that is Can America be reborn as we approach 250, or are we destined to fall?

On that cheery note... Here's wishing for a full and speedy recovery for Mayor Giuliani.

Have a good day!

16 A United flight from Venice to NYC was doing fine, right up until it tried to land. It hit a light pole, pushing the pole into a jeep on the highway, and it crushed the top of a truck, sending the driver to the hospital. Well, I've finished my spreadsheet on Lacey's show career:

http://soyaraborzoi.com/LaceyCareer.htm

The late Bea Godsol said, "All dogs have faults, but the great ones wear them well." That's Lacey to a T. She didn't have the prettiest head nor the strongest front, but she could move like nothing else and just oozed charisma.

In every one of her 378 shows as a special, she was handled by Her Majesty, who knew how to get the best out of her. Lacey loved to show and roared into the ring saying, "Here I am. Adore me!" And it was borne out by her record as the biggest-winning breeder-owner-handled Borzoi bitch ever.

So when I looked at who beat her in some of the shows where she lost, I just had to shake my head and say to the (likely now departed) judge, "What the hell were you thinking?"

There’s good news and bad news in that; the good news is that this claim by the Iranians is a pathetic fantasy.

And so on to chronicling Dutch's specials career, a more melancholy story. Dutch was built like a brick shithouse with both doors open. On examining his front, one judge asked Her Majesty, "Is this all him?" And for a huge dog, the Beeg Boy was amazingly light on his feet (nothing worse than a heavy-footed Borzoi).

But Dutch was more complex. He liked showing but not traveling. Little things bothered him. He would do what we wanted but no more than was asked. And all that is reflected in his record.

134 Ready to have your mind blown

It costs over $100,000 on average to build a single family home in California just in fees

This isn’t building, labor, or materials, this is just bureaucracy

- Pure building permit + plan review fees for a new single-family home are often in the $20,000 - $40,000 range
- Total “soft costs,” meaning permits + impact fees, school fees, utility connections, environmental reviews, traffic mitigation, parks, etc often reach $100,000+ in major cities and counties
- One home in Fremont cost $160,000 just in government fees before any building started

Contrast this with Texas

Texas base building permits for a new single-family home are typically $1,000–$3,000. Impact and development fees average under $1,000 per unit

San Francisco planned on spending $1.7 million to build a public toilet, after extreme backlash online they were able to build it for around $200,000 and it’s now open

Aside from a little pain in the pump, not as bad as it was under Biden, what changes in our lives has the war made? If the media wasn't constantly bleating that Trump is losing would most Americans even know there was a war going on?

Iran, on the other hand, is watching their economy implode and haven't got a prayer of getting out of this militarily. Everyday this blockade goes on they get closer to the edge.

There's a cost to destroying Iran that doesn't get talked about much. I don't see Trump being a nation builder but someone has to do it. And if that happens gas is likely to be higher for a long time. I suspect Trump is ready to attack when he feels he has to but I don't think we are there yet.

In large part because every one in the ME views negotiations as a sign of weakness and a willingness to surrender. The Iranian leadership quite clearly believe that the US does not have the nerve to continue the fight, and are openly mocking us now because of that.

Waiting 6 months for the shipping shutdown to have an effect is a fine tactical plan, but horrible politically. If the US is to retain any credibility, the Straits must now be reopened by force.

167 My observation is, there is an ebb and flow to politics and something changed radically. Within the last couple decades Democrats no longer had to moderate their message or tack to the center or compromise on anything. Just full speed ahead on Crazy.

Are they completely insane? Well - yes, but the only rational explanation really is a well entrenched system of election fraud.

They don’t care about polling or citizens or public opinion because they no longer have to. While many constantly shorthand things like “50% of the country thinks X is great!!?” it’s nowhere near that. America has been subjected to the most sophisticated gaslighting in world history, it’s not even close.

Frank was an incrementalist. And that's why we're in this situation. I can acknowledge his individual tremendous successes while criticizing his overall work.

The two specific issues he mentions in the article are “defund the police” and “open borders”,[/b[ which of course are not Democratic policies. Hopefully he articulates a more nuanced position in the book and it’s not just the same talking points people have heard a million times.

Is it really? I dont see the signs of suffering and it seems the oil is being stored or moved somewhere. The wells aren’t being shutdown and we were told three days ago that would happen already. It’s kinda like the deadlines the president keeps setting- nonsense. Russia is helping them arm up and providing them more manpads like the one that shot down our F-15. The idea that Iran can be completely destroyed, and thats what we are talking about if the mullahs don't surrender, is a painless exercise is a fantasy.”

The pain from the loss of oil is not from Iranian oil alone; for the first time since the Gulf Wars, Kuwait last month exported no oil at all, because the straits were closed. There is far more capacity taken offline right now than just Iranian exports, that is why it is having such an impact.

Iran does not have to be destroyed; but the Straits must be reopened militarily. This will almost certainly require the use of amphibious troops to seize and occupy all of the small islands in the straits, which serve as observation posts and weapons platforms for the Iranians.

This should have already been done, which leads me to suspect (although of course I don’t know) that this is the step that Trump is balking at.

The effort, known as Operation Economic Fury, is aimed at crippling Tehran’s financial lifelines by seizing Iranian assets, freezing bank accounts and pressuring foreign governments to cut ties with the nation.

"We are freezing bank accounts everywhere. More importantly, we are making people less willing to deal with the regime," Bessent said.

"We can see that every day, it is more pressure on the regime. The retirement funds that they thought that they had outside of Iran, we are freezing. We're holding those for the Iranian people. Same with all their villas in the south of France and all over the world, and we are going to track them down."

215 I’m a lot less sanguine about a resolution in Iran unless there is some kind of major movement this week. Should we restart military action the stakes are higher. Russia has been providing armaments during the pause, and helping them understand which sites have been surveilled. They are also rebuilding infrastructure. So they are moving assets and hardening defenses. That increased our military risk factors. Remaining leadership has gone underground which will make them harder to reach. All doable but potentially more costly. A kinetic restart is an admission our intervening efforts have failed and only succeeded in helping the enemy reinvigorate their defenses. Personally I think it was a huge tactical mistake from which all current downstream impacts like gas prices and the strait closure flows. YMMV.

228 CAF training platoon with 83% non-citizens devolved into ethnic infighting

A confidential Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School report has revealed a complete breakdown in basic officer training following a surge in permanent resident enrolment.

One French-language platoon, which had over 80 per cent non-citizens, was reportedly wracked by an inability to communicate fluently, a lack of respect towards female CAF members and infighting between Cameroonian and Côte d’Ivoire candidates.

The Quebec platoon saw fewer than one in two recruits graduate, while allegations of racial discrimination were made in multiple directions, from candidates against staff and between candidates of opposing ethnic blocs themselves. Additionally, command saw “challenges” in training permanent residents as they lacked “respect towards women” peers and superiors.
