This week's episode: Psycho Killer! Battle Of The Worlds! Cigar of the Week ![]() Most premium cigars with American leaf get that from Connecticut shade or broadleaf, or Pennsylvania broadleaf. A few however use tobacco from other states, and one of those is Drew Estate's 20 Acre Farm, whose fillers include leaf grown in Florida. On top of that is binder from Honduras and a beautiful golden brown connecticut shade wrapper from Ecuador. I tried the toro (6 X 52). The draw was just right. Due to breezy conditions I sort of botched the light-up, scorching up the side of the wrapper in one area. As an experiment I let the burn line correct itself - which it did - and it didn't require much management after. Smoke, as always with a Drew Estate cigar, was plentiful. To me a nice version of the classic connecticut shade cigar - mild profile, hints of sweetness and sweeter flavors throughout, some light wood or cedar in the background. More perceptive reviewers find coffee bean, citrus, and vanilla. Very pleasant smoke. This cigar is available online for $11 and up.Excellent as always, rhomboid! Thank you! The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid Anyone have others to include? The new Colt Python's stainless steel finish is just a bit less shiny than the old school "Bright Stainless Steel" finish of yesteryear. For a production line finish, I think it's pretty good. It's fair to say that today's Python finish will never be as good as those done by the old school craftsmen Colt had 50-60 years ago. But the modern finish is more durable than that old school polishing done by those craftsmen.

Good evening.
Well, my ability to hit stuff at long ranges continues to improve. We ran a match, 1,000 yard, KYL @ 1020 and turkey silhouettes @1185 yards. Due to a tactical mistake on my part, I went from second to fourth place and just out of getting a medal for my efforts. Darn. By the way, going 3 for 5 @ 1020 yards (12", 10" and 8" plate) is difficult. (technically, I went 4 for 5 but one shot didn't count because I hit the same plate twice) The tactical mistake? I used the wrong target for sighting @ 1185. I didn't get the correct feedback to really judge wind, etc. Live and learn. Posted by: RI Red Just video clips I've seen. You need a heavier buffer tube spring. Tippmann Paintball came out with a marker called the A5 RT. (Reactive Trigger) The FRT works the same way from what I understand. If you pull the trigger hard, you get semi auto. If you pull it just right, you hit the sweet spot and it fires really really quick. Some say you need a third position switch, some say you don't. Posted by: rickb223 at May 03, 2026 07:34 PM (DSLf3) 53
RI Red. I looked into forced reset triggers years ago and have never done one for two reasons. One the legal BS that can come with one and two, I really don't see much benefit to it.

DMV MGC meetup today. For a change of pace, I brought combat silhouette targets for Sharon to shoot vice bullseye targets. These targets are designed for police qualifications at 25 feet. I had Sharon shoot her Glock w/ optic at 30 feet, first two handed, then one handed. With two hands she scored 24/25. With one hand, she shot 16/25. Both were shot with five shot groups.

I did do something useful this week. I put lights in my gun safes using 10’ LED strips and plunger switches from Amazon. It was pretty simple, just required a bit of redneck engineering to figure out how to mount the switches without drilling steel. The hardest part was splicing the switches into the power cords since the wires are finer than frog hair and break if you look at them too hard. Anyway it works and I’m so inordinately proud of myself that I keep opening the door just to see the light come on.

It's in the narrow very late serial range of the 1,000 or so the OSS bought in 1943, and has the small 'star' stamped on the rear of the cylinder, for the OSS contract. Range report: Had help from the Horde a few weeks back on improving my trigger squeeze while managing a hand tremor.
I shot the S&W Bodyguard 2.0 (.38 acp) this week and kept it on paper, but did not shoot well while trying slight modifications to my grip and mental processes. Some people opined that I probably also have pretty weak grip strength at this point - with which I agree. So I decided to test this theory and see how much worse a heavier trigger pull would affect my aim. I believe the BG 2.0 has about a 5.5# trigger weight. I grabbed my truck gun, which probably has at least an 8# trigger weight. It also happens to be a Hi-Point .45 that weighs 45 ounces unloaded! Surprisingly, having that much weight in my hands actually "loaded" my muscles a little and minimized my tremor. I shot the cheap gun with the heavier trigger weight more accurately! I don't know if that result is due to small sample size, but I did feel a bit steadier firing an anvil compared to a compact pistol. I have opened up a pistol range at our farm, so I can keep experimenting, before I switch over to pounding fundamentals. Thanks for all of the help everyone! My Massachusetts based daughter took possession of a 20 gauge Baretta with a skeet choke this weekend. To own it she had to put in a gun safe (my rule) and get a couple of friends to tell the chief of police she isn't crazy (Massachusetts rule). Presto! Her gun club should offer storage as an option, imo, but I guess their insurance company disagrees.

Also we continue to work with this Kimber CDS9.
It is probably about broken in now. It seems to be settling down and it will go where you point it now. But it has a problem with getting dirty. Gets a carbon buildup on the rails and the slide will hang going back into battery. I cleaned it today before the range and gave it a light lube and after about 100 rounds it started again. BUT - I found this behavior could be defeated if I fully extended and locked my elbows. Anything else it acted like it was limp-wristed. Going to clean it again and just try running it wet. My first revolver was one of the last Colt Detective Specials, bought in 1994 for $250. I had no idea at the time that it was the end of the line for this classic snubby. Oh, and swa was ON FIRE today with shooting. She shot the CDS9 really well even though she had to tap the slide back into battery after each shot. Really well meaning 5 in the center dot of the target at 5 yards.
And then she took her purple Glock with the Holosun and put 5 in a 50 cent piece sized circle at 7 yards. Earlier she was shooting her Kimber Aegis Elite (a gun we all recognize as a cheat code for shooting) and the RSO came by "Ma'am it looks like you are holding it this way and that's a heavy gun and blah blah blah blah." So she just plugged the target and he said "Well, okay, I guess I don't need to tell you how to shoot." Posted by: blaster - Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat at May 03, 2026 08:23 PM (NlEaG) 104

138 136 Whig, eesh.
Prayer up. Hope you recover soon. Posted by: Bulg I knew the problems going it. But, I had to have surgery as I was losing feeling, strength, and function in both arms and hands. Peripheral nerves were getting severely compressed off the spine. But, when you fuse one part of the spine, it changes the weight distribution on the rest of it due to gravity and that is what is provoking the pain and back spasms. Eventually I hope a new equilibrium will be reached but nsaids, steroids, and other tricks are no go until the surgeon is sure that the cage implant is bonding to the bone. Otherwise, I risk him going back in (about one in eight chance of the implants not bonding normally for multilevel cage type fusion). So enforced idleness, weight limits on carrying, and constantly ensuring proper posture when sitting and walking. Has me going through my music collection and ready to digitize all my albums (down to 600 or so). Preparing to make a music streaming server out of some old desktops for the whole house. FWIW, the pistol group analysis chart is a good self diagnosis for fundamentals. And you can check using a weapons mounted laser during dry fire practice at the zero you set.
You can see the laser light moving in exactly the same way a bullet would at normal 7 yards or less range as you work the trigger using your grip. Sometimes dry fire is about all one can do to keep up practice and a laser mounted helps if you don't buy the more expensive laser training systems. Nice! A lot of people overlook the training value of .22's!
Posted by: Weasel Plus, there’s so much fun to be had shooting overripe produce at 25-50 yards in the woods. No clean up required but the brass and plinking in the woods is THE BEST PLINKING! Posted by: nurse ratched at May 03, 2026 09:32 PM (A5RD0) 164

I find it hard to see Claude Rains in any other role than that of Dr. Jack Griffin.
And most people just couldn't see him in that role. Posted by: BeckoningChasm at May 03, 2026 09:43 PM (CHHv1) 166

Claude Rains was also perfect as Mr Dryden of the Arab Bureau in Lawrence of Arabia.

FRT: I bought a used heavy barrel "Varmint" AR-15 that was described as having a Giessle match trigger. When it came in it had a Franklin trigger with a 3-position safety installed.
I think I made money on the deal. I can always swap out the trigger. I just hope the previous owner didn't burn out the barrel throat doing mag dumps. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at May 03, 2026 09:52 PM (mjROD) 171
Shootin' match yesterday was fun. Six stages, seems I "warm up" (mentally) as the morning goes on, so by Stage 4 I'm not making gross mental mistakes (umm, how does the first string of a 3-string stage, each with 6 shots, end up with 5 shots on the first string? Fair amount of laughter ensued).
Haven't been shooting much and basic technique sloppy (I can see my sights moving around). One thing is I shoot while moving whenever possible, don't do much static shooting. But with longer days I plan to do some movin'/shootin' practice after hours at my range. Posted by: rhomboid at May 03, 2026 09:54 PM (U/Byj) 172
General Allenby to Mr Dryden:
"Well, do we have any intentions in Arabia, Dryden?" Dryden (steepling fingers): "Complicated question". One of the zillion classic lines/exchanges in that masterpiece. Posted by: rhomboid at May 03, 2026 09:55 PM (U/Byj) 173

But the reloading operation is finally back in action. Filled the 9mm can (shot about 130 of it yesterday at the match). Tumbling all my dirty 9mm brass. Finished off about 60 rounds of 30 carbine. Now bench is set up to charge/seat about 120 rounds of 30-06 food for the M1s.
1911 needs full disassembly and cleaning. M1 No. 2 needs the same. After that, 45 Colt, .380, and 38sp. American manufacturing is on the rise, even in garages. Posted by: rhomboid at May 03, 2026 09:58 PM (U/Byj) 175

One guy had an S&W M&P FPC, their (new to me) 9mm pistol caliber carbine. Pretty sweet. Folding stock, light, so very handy. Keep thinking about something like this for 1) home defense 2) something the boss will enjoy shooting (she's great with the M1 carbine).
Still wondering about the point/fun quotient of using one of these - with a dot sight - at a handgun match. As I recall when scoring his paper targets - yep, all "As". Duh. Anyway. Posted by: rhomboid at May 03, 2026 10:07 PM (U/Byj) Processing 0.16, elapsed 0.1339 seconds. |
