Saturday Evening Movie Post [moviegique]: Over Your Dead Body

The Boy and I had a blast at this violent Jorma Taccone (MacGruber) black-comedy, but I couldn't help but notice this was the second romantic-dark-comedy in a row, after The Drama. Is Hollywood maybe inching its way back toward the perennial crowd-pleasing romcom genre, but can't find a straight path?

I have no idea.

When the movie opens, we see sad sack Dan (Jason Segel) being bullied on the set of the commercial he's directing, and he's very ostentatiously telling everyone within earshot about how he's going up to the cabin with his wife Lisa (Samara Weaving), and how she's insisting—insisting!—on going on this very dangerous hike by herself.

OK, so, obviously, he's planning to kill her.

When he gets home, one of his wife's girlfriends is leaving, and she smiles at him and says, "Happy hunting!" which is perplexing because of course he's not any kind of a hunter.

So, somewhat less obviously, she's planning to kill him.

1.jpg

Somewhat more obviously.

This movie does a really excellent job of seeding little things throughout and then recontextualizing them through flashbacks. This is done for laughs, primarily, but Taccone manages—despite the mix of relationship dysfunction, serious violence and comedy—to give the film a pitch-perfect tone that treats its characters with respect—and, like The Drama, is weirdly, cautiously optimistic. Buried in the shenanigans is a fairly profound statement about how we exaggerate our neuroses, and it's only when we come up against some hard psychosis that we straighten out.

Where R Patz and Zendaya (in The Drama) are dealing with near lethal levels of cringe, Segel and Weaving are working on a much more primal level, and this is both more fun and more satisfying. Also more preposterous, but who cares?

Part of the non-working dynamic between Dan and Lisa is that Lisa, an actress, married Dan, a director, because as an older man with a vision, he had a clear path forward for his life. Seven years later, he's making pop-up ads, and he's encouraged (coerced?) her into being an actress in community theater, which has resulted in them burning up all their money. Dan is a spendthrift, impress-your-colleagues-with-reckless-spending kind of guy.

I had a little trouble with Lisa being only ten years younger than Dan, because Weaving is a younger, prettier, better acting Margot Robbie and Segel is halfway to being the crypt-keeper.

Seriously, this is The Muppets guy? I mean, accounting for acting, lighting, makeup—he still looks like he's melting, and he's, like, 45.

2.jpg

Sorry, dude. I look way older than nearly 29, myself.

Weaving, whom I've primarily seen covered in blood from the Ready or Not movies, looks like she's comfortably in her 20s. She's 34. Nonetheless, both she and Segel are by turns despicable, petty, cruel, sympathetic, pathetic—oddly real feeling for a movie like this.

Rounding out the cast is Timothy Olyphant, who's way prettier than Segel (and 12 years older) to say nothing of a haggard Juliette Lewis (who's right between Olyphant and Segel in age) and Keith Jardine, reprising his career-long role as a goon. He's funny in this. Paul Guillfoyle is Segel's I'm-Very-Disappointed-In-You-Son father, who thinks the problem with the younger generation (this would be X) is that they didn't have a Vietnam.

Guillfoyle, besides being a good actor you've seen in a dozen different things, has a relatively small part that really illustrates how well the story is constructed, and its attention to detail. As Michael, Dan's dad in the old-folks home, you could see his rambling as out of touch and just comic relief. But it's his cabin, and his guns in the cabin, and there's a great bit where he's driving a tricked out Honda or something and he can't get the radio to stop playing techno, which is very old folks, but then he starts to really dig the music, and you realize that, like every other aspect of this movie, nothing was "just a joke". It all contributes to story, to character and to an ultimate payoff.

3.jpg

It's very hard to find images of this film that aren't spoilers. So, let's just enjoy Weaving's high-waisted jeans which, at some points during the film, come up to nearly her armpits.

It's weird when someone seems to know what he's doing, and it's weird that it's weird. We've been seeing more competence in storytelling lately, and we're beside ourselves.

The writing, editing and direction are terrific. The camera moves purposely and without that sense of clichéd, pre-canned motions most films use these days. The music (both diagetic and not) also contributes to the story, as when Lisa and Dan can't decide on a streaming channel.

The only thing that would keep me from recommending it is the violence. It is increasingly brutal and graphic. The way Taccone uses this to maintain the tone is the sort of thing few Westerners can pull off. Early on, we are told to take the characters' intentions sincerely. They mean to do each other harm—they're just not very competent. But this incompetence leads to serious injury. And the movie takes increasingly dark turns without losing either its sense of humor or its earnestness.

It is, in some ways, much easier to watch than the very awkward The Drama, and certainly more fun—if you can stomach it.

They did the meme!

One very good foreign movie recommendation
15 Minutes of War, a French movie from Fred Grivios
Bssed on a real hostages crisis in Somalia, terrorists kidnapping a bus load of French kids in 1976.

7 How would you have liked Kevin Kline as Taggert in Galaxy Quest? Just found out he was the first choice when Harold Ramis was the chosen director .

After Ramis quit and they continued to cast , Bruce Willis was one they thought of pursuing. The actor who wanted the part was Alec Baldwin.

I actually could see Bruce Willis in the part.

9 The key to GQ is its sincerity. Kline could do that. Ramis, too. But Allen was kind of perfect. Willis is too in-on-the-joke. Baldwin...maybe?

Where we got lucky, I think, is in what a good job Dean Parsiot did as director. It's far-and-away his best feature.

He changed up the script to make it just as much a drama as a comedy. Ramis and the studio started off as having it more slap stick comedy.

12 Just finished watching "The Creator". Gorgeous as hell and dumber than a box of rocks. Imagine a mash-up of "Avatar", "Independence Day" and "I, Robot", and just as dumb. The script is a series of Ryan George's "Super easy! Barely an inconvenience!" Every character - and I mean every character - does laughably stupid things (like a cop who sits in the back of a police van with two prisoners WHO ARE NOT RESTRAINED IN ANY WAY. And TURNS HIS BACK ON THEM, with predictable - and very convenient for the plot - results).

The Critical Drinker liked it, with reservations. One of the few times I've disagreed with him. It's a very pretty batch of meh.

13 Popping in to say I'm in the middle of the newest Jurassic movie (having skipped 3, 4, 5, and 6, but this was supposed to be a good jump on point...and it is...but)...

Why ON EARTH did they do this "family on a pleasure sail" subplot - at an hour in, I'd happily see them all die. They serve no real purpose for me, and take away from the "dangerous mission" vibe the rest of the movie has.

I don't really care how their plot ends b/c they were jammed into this movie like they jammed "Iron Heart" into Black Panther 2...they just wanted a cute kid in danger for a summer movie and teens to draw teen audience...and I'm so not here for it.

14 If I had any say in Hollywood, it'll be good mid-range movies for adults, event movies for niche audiences (SF, musicals), cheap but experimental horror, and animation.

Streaming shows can be brilliant, but too many of them pad the storyline. That's why I love the old 1.5-3.00 hour format. It requires disciplined storytelling.

I can also recommend it.
I feel like it would go well with "The Hellbound Heart". No spoilers but let's just say that Jane Doe isn't as dead as she looks. Also the Cenobites don't arrive to save anybody. The undertaker and his son/apprentice are wholly on their own.

Sunstroke, a Russian movie with subtitles it was very good, but from beginning knew it wouldn't end well. Follows a junior Czarist officer after the Russian Revolution is over so he is a prisoner. Netflix dictats are that they be "screen friendly" as in "you can look at your phone without missing anything."

Pardon my French but Fuck That Noise. I'm not watching something that's designed to NOT be watched. For that matter, I will be very cautious watching any MOVIE with "Netflix" on it, because the same dictat applies.

27 "The French Connection" was highly original when it came out, less so today because it's been so much copied.

Hackman's Popeye Doyle was the original one-man good cop / bad cop. He was picked for the role after everyone else turned it down, often because the pay wasn't enough.

Bill Hickman was the stunt driver in Bullitt, The French Connection and The Seven-Ups. He played the Fed that Popeye shoots at the end.

31 I'm with you, Eris @ 14. I'd lean more toward 1.5-2.00 hour format. Think I've mentioned George Roy Hill's comment to William Goldman here before -- 'If you can't tell your story in an hour and 40 minutes, you'd better be David Lean." We're fresh out of David Leans (and Hill himself didn't often meet that standard IIRC).

So what did I binge on over the last few weeks? The Wire, which ignores the 1.5-2.00, or 3.00, or even 8.00 mark, and makes it work anyway.

If I had dictatorial powers, a third or half the movies to be produced over the next five years would have to be adaptations of good novels (chosen by me, of course) and the writers would have to be faithful to the story, and ditto the directors and actors who would not be allowed to 'make the material their own' -- any variations subject to the novelist's approval. Violations would be punishable by the Shirley Jackson method, with the offender being stoned to death at Hollywood and Vine by the novelist or his representatives.

Well, the cheap-but-experimental horror is one of the few safe bets. You don't always win, but you can beat the house over time.

Mid-range movies for adults, which used to be pretty good at topping the BO, are probably a no-go now. Current adults did not grow up seeing them in theaters.

Can't agree. Tim Allen is perfect as the egocentric star of a cheesy TV sci-fi show, and his mimicry of William Shatner is spot on. Also, he's not that well known to movie fans (I'd never seen him before I saw "GQ"), while Bruce Willis will always be Bruce Willis to moviegoers.

I'm sure Willis would have done a creditable job, but the casting of Allen (as well as everyone else in the movie) is brilliant.

"Weapons" is a horror film.

And it didn't really "blow up the BO". It was a solid hit, and Creggers has a following that will serve him as long as he manages to keep the budget around $50M.

It came in around #17 for the year, with about $150M domestic. To put this in perspective, that's about what #17 was making 15 years ago--not adjusting for inflation.

If you adjust for inflation, it would come in around #50. Which is interesting for those of us who would like to continue to go see movies but wonder if it can be an viable concern in the future.

115 > It's not that they can't make them, either. They do not WANT to.

Well, I have a saying about that, that I regularly apply to journalists: You can't just suddenly start being good.

Also: Politics makes people stupid.

The relevance of the latter is that, once you've decided you're against something (like heterosexuality), and you've made yourself stupid about it, you can't just then go "Oh, all the money's in romcoms. We'll make those."

No, you won't. You don't know how to make them anymore. You made yourself so stupid, you can't see other people at all.

This is why your TV shows turn left. Why your movie studios turn left. Why everything, eventually, turns left: Because the decision was made that something trumped quality, keeping the customer satisfied--and that slope of stupidity is one that's nigh impossible to climb back up.
