41 I saw a comprehensive exhibit of this dude's ouvre in Brussels about 28 years ago. Appropriately, it was held in a train station. Artist had an intense experience in a train station as a boy. Almost all his paintings feature trains and many of them have nudes as well. Don't know what it all means but the guy could paint. He was roughly contemporary with Magritte.

68 From wiki:

Night train-

Delvaux painted this artwork at a time when he felt trapped in a loveless marriage. He wished "to paint boredom, sadness and the desire to get away from it all... There is this nostalgic aspect about waiting rooms where people pass by briefly before leaving... I tried to capture the beauty of the waiting room in an empty station. People are not necessary, for a station has its own life"

According to Christie's, this work is "a powerful poetic expression of the overwhelming sense of paralysis and imprisonment Delvaux was experiencing at the time":

Depicting the stillness and ennui of a station waiting room infused with the languid erotic mystery of a sleeping nude and a lone train pulling into a station, the picture's main subject seems to be the articulation of a terrifying emptiness. The moonlit station clock and the empty gaze of the upright receptionist sitting to attention at her desk, echoed by her reflection in the mirror, seem to emphasize the frozen nature of time and space extending into infinity, while the nude lies bored and restless underneath a bleak sign advertising the endless cycle of arrivals and departures.[1

162 Hate speech from Marco Rubio.

My hope for America is what it's always been. I think it's the hope I hope we all share.

We want it to continue to be the place where anyone from anywhere can achieve anything. Where you're not limited by the circumstances of your birth, by the color of your skin, by your ethnicity, but frankly it's a place where you are able to overcome challenges and achieve your full potential.

I think that should be the goal of every country in the world, frankly, but I think in the U.S. we're not perfect, our history is not one of perfection, but it's still better than anybody else's history; and ours is a story of perpetual improvement. Each generation has left the next generation of Americans freer, more prosperous, safer, and that is our goal as well.

But it is a unique and exceptional country, and as we come upon this 250-year anniversary, I think we have a lot to learn and be proud of in our history. It is one of perpetual and continuous improvement where each generation has done its part to bring us closer to fulfilling the vision that the founders of this country had upon its founding.

217 No one here thought Trump would go after Iran, not like he did.
I'm willing to give some grace on how he chooses to close it off.
Trump is a lot of things but poor negotiator is not one of those things, he knows what he wants out of this and he will not blink before getting it.
I'm even open to the possibility that Iran isn't the only focus in this action, and by only concerning oneself with Iran one could be missing something.

The IRGC is running Iran now. The IRGC will continue to run Iran until they are taken out violently. The Mullahs are already finished, and those left are IRGC hand puppets.

"Supreme Leader" Mojtaba has been dead for weeks. It suits the IRGC very nicely to have a Supreme Leader made out of cardboard, especially when they're the ones with all the guns.

220 ICE agents storm Disney cruise docking in California and arrest multiple staff in front of stunned passengers

But either way, the story is nice!

The “stunned” passenger reporting this, Dharma Mehta, is a bit “meta”.
I suppose that’s a bit cruel, too.

Ah, reminds me: had a family member graduate Harvard Law in the 90's. For the main graduation ceremony (there were also several separate ones for the law students), Ted Turner was the guest speaker. He was totally unprepared, and spent a lot of the "speech" recounting the diarrhea he had on the plane trip to MA. Absolute a$$hole behavior!

The IRGC didn't import its Iraqi militias because it felt like it was strong.

And every indication is that the IRGC, the Basij, and militias are being targeted by guerillas within the country.

The oppression ramped up, but so has the counter reaction.

I was always a fan of the old black & white classic films -- likely because we only had a black & white television growing up.

We killed cable over two decades ago, but I did enjoy watching that channel -- especially when directors like Sydney Pollack would host and comment on the various old films aired.

I assume TCM is still around?

WB was going to shut it down. It caused some controversy. Apparently it was one of the only profitable parts of the company.

It's still around.

Some major directors took to some guest curating and introductions like Scorsese and Anderson.

The IRGC has been the de facto government in Iran for decades. "Supreme Leader" is just Iranian horseshit for projecting some sort of legitimacy.

Went on our first cruise (to Alaska) a couple years ago. Most of the workers (on Holland America) appeared to be Dot Indian -- even the bartenders. They all spoke English and were polite, good, hard workers.

I got an "indentured servant" vibe, and even though automatic tips were included in the "all-inclusive" price -- I still tipped generously, especially the couple of young men who kept our room clean and never stole anything.

247 Yeah life as a cruise worker sucks from everything I’ve read. It’s shitty pay, long hours and out at sea for months on end. Plus unless they’re manager types, they share small rooms with no windows below deck.
