Trains are an odd one. I think for the most part the people fascinated with them (like my Dad, definitely my Dad) are not really thinking of the kind of societal impact of them. It is just an obsession. (I feel it a bit for airships.) There is a romance for people there that is compelling. It is not about the practicality, but something inherent in the thing. During Thanksgiving/Christmas, my uncle will literally just put train switching station webcams on their giant TV and he and my Dad will just sit there and watch.

This. It aids in the three dimensionality of the painting. Without it, the scene would look more flat. This way, it is like you can see the painting stretching back into the middle distance.

A few years back I read a well done essay by someone who rode the train across the country. (Thank goodness the hideous ticket cost was underwritten by some journalistic benefactor.)

He said it was a completely different universe which he playfully named "Amtrakistan."

Densha de Go! is more about directly manipulating a passenger train's acceleration and braking to keep on a tight schedule, with harsh time penalties if you overshoot the platform at stopping points.

81 This is a different scene from Monet, at least in my limited exposure. I didn't know he did any cityscapes. Monet's scenes aren't especially unusual or riveting. But the techniques of pastels and their application along with his color choices is interesting. Today's selection really shows the Impressionistic style.

I didn't used to like Impressionist paintings until I saw a few in person. Being able to stand close and see the techniques then standing back to see the whole effect was eye opening.

63 45 Trains are an odd one.

10 years?

We took the TGV a lot, and it is fantastic. But it is also financed by the government via ridiculously high taxes. And...of course...France is much denser and smaller than the USA, so trains can work. Here it's just a joke.

But longer distances...into central and eastern Europe... are not so great.

I was never a big fan of trains, except-

we lived within walking distance of train tracks when I was a wee tad and my friends and I would occasionally wander down there to place pennies on the track and have the train flatten them.

That was cool.

As was getting the engineer to blow his horn when passing.

On the down side- my folks told me to stay away from the tracks because hobos would occasionally hop off the trains and were dangerous to children.

And in fact we sometimes saw hobos coming away from the train track area.

They always looked pretty grotty so, I suppose the romance of riding the rails was more myth than reality.

You buy a British anvil. It comes from a manufacturer founded in 1743 whose Wikipedia page contains a 4,000-word section titled “Decline.” The casting is genuinely magnificent, the proportions perfected over eleven generations of wheelwrights and naval ironmongers. It arrives three weeks late with a handwritten apology referencing “industrial action at the Crewe distribution hub.” The accompanying booklet is bound in green cloth and contains a foreword by a minor royal. Halfway down page 12 you discover that the company was acquired in 2009 by a private equity firm headquartered in Luxembourg, and that the anvils are now manufactured in a facility outside Katowice. The quality is, against all odds, still excellent. There is a small brass plaque on the side which reads “By Appointment.” It does not specify to whom.

You also have to love the bald, in your face, twerking, booty shaking corruption of it.

Like being motorboated by Stalin.

There was a CA rep in Congress that proposed exactly that some years ago. To save SS of course.

189 166 This is interesting. Washington had a pension plan and raided it and used all the money for other shit:

https://tinyurl.com/3fmrjd3p

The thing that is the most sad about this is that they protest 'It was fully funded! It was going to have a surplus! Why?' and I have to reply 'Why do you think they took it?'
Posted by: Aetius451AD at May 07, 2026 10:34 AM (bss/y)

======

The most significant factor in the demise of private defined benefit pension plans is Howard Metzenbaum's excise tax on reversions to private employers. Washington taking the reversion is not what bugs me; it's that XYZ, Inc. can't without paying an enormous penalty.

Oh sorry..Denominazione d'Origine Protetta, which certifies they are from the Agro Sarnese-Nocerino origin.

It's an authenticator, like for Champagne being from Champagne. The tomatoes from that region are generally superior.

Welp, the GOP should be advertising this little bit of Democrat perfidy everywhere. Especially in blue states.

If they don't, why that just makes the GOP) useless..and who would ever think that?

195 164 There was one label on a jar that had the image of the award presented to the company by Victor Emmanuel III at some festival in Italy, which is a really long time to rest on one's laurels.

They have a facility in Paris, TX.

It's about to switch from soups to cheeses or some such that's going to cut their employee count in half. A LOT are about to lose their jobs.

It's more complicated than that. They literally stole an election in plain site, then pulled a Reichstag fire on the people who showed up to protest. Crickets.

The thing is even then things did not get bad enough for people to overcome the need to not blow up their life to hang them all from lampposts. It is natural.

That is why I think the line has to be at gun confiscation- because after that you won't be able to stop them. But they will try to ease in the dildo of tyranny.

Well, like Oregon, nothing is unconstitutional if the Oregon Supreme Court (which is selected specifically for this) says it is OK.

Dad always swore the Oregon Supreme Court got captured politically when they decided they could be included in the state pension
