Glad to hear you are on the mend. I seem to have had a brush with mycocarditis, first time since my Cardiac Event in 2019. Went to the ER, found I wasn't having a full-on attack, taking it easy and scheduling follow-up appointments with primary and cardiologist. The rest is helping, and because I've been sidelined, the kids have stepped up and are cleaning and reorganizing the house, telling me to just chill. I think they finally realize how much I hate the current mess, and that leaving me to do it alone pretty much guarantees I'll work myself back into the hospital, same as in 2019. As was the case then, this is a blessing in disguise. Lots more time to read St. Augustine! Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at May 02, 2026 08:23 AM (ZOv7s) 26

But now, the errands you *had* to run on Saturday (or Sunday) because you were occupied M-F can be dealt with on any day. So those errands days will seem like your old Saturday, and if you choose to do nothing on your actual Saturday, it will seem like a vacation day in the old times. Finished a long and utterly pointless (save from the historical perspective) project imaginable. I went through every show that our late, great Lacey appeared in as a special and squared up all the records, all 379 of them. Date, show, link to the AKC results, entry, results in breed and group and who she lost to. The searchable results on the AKC site only go back 10 years and Lacey was shown between 2000 and 2005. If a judge dies or goes inactive, or if a club ceases to exist, they're purged from the AKC site. So it required some inventiveness to gather everything up accurately. But it was done. The Daily Mail article on coffee: In the top paragraphs, the implication is that drinking coffee is bad.
"They found regular coffee drinkers experienced more impulsive behaviour and emotional reactivity than people who did not drink coffee. But after coffee drinkers gave up their habit for a fortnight, both measures fell." Then they go on to tell you how re-introducing coffee lowered anxiety and psychological distress, and coffee consumption improves gut biome and reduces inflammation. But that's okay. Posted by: Tonypete at May 02, 2026 08:26 AM (Kyh8Y) --- Alternate take: they had a racy lives back in the day, and as they feel their end coming, many memories are coming back to them and they seek consolation when recalling a lifetime's worth of sin. I am much more conscientious than I was before I turned 29, and my confessions often turn to confronting the shame I now feel for what I did. What seemed praiseworthy and "wild" was in reality depraved and I was too blind to see it. Looking back with clear moral teaching, I shudder, especially as I help raise the grandchildren to avoid those sins. I do find much consolation in that my kids literally cannot conceive of me having a sordid past - not because I am a hypocrite, but because I raised them with strong guardrails that they have (for the most part) respected. I wish my parents had given me that gift instead of what they imagined to be "freedom." Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at May 02, 2026 08:50 AM (ZOv7s) 74

On the good news front: I secured the services of a Franciscan group to lead our commemoration of the death of St. Francis of Assisi from this life into eternal life with God (Transitus). It will held on the evening of October 3 - the vigil of his Feast Day.
Our Bishop has announced our parish is an authorized pilgrimage site this year and we are trying to put together activities for the year. We observe the Transitus as a way to remember his holy death and renew our commitment to the Gospel life Francis lived. Posted by: Tonypete at May 02, 2026 09:04 AM (Kyh8Y) 83

What seemed praiseworthy and "wild" was in reality depraved and I was too blind to see it. ___________ I suppose the troubles I have are twofold. My life is such an embarrassment to me that I seek to repress memories of my sordid past. I suppose the troubles I have are twofold. My life is such an embarrassment to me that I seek to repress memories of my sordid past. The other is that while I'm sorry I did those things, have never done them again and have amended my life, I can't quite renounce the pleasure I got from them at that time.
Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at May 02, 2026 09:04 AM (HdYcL) --- The interesting thing is that they had very much faded when I entered the Church, and I was untroubled by them for a long time. The birth of my grandchildren really brought it all back, in part because unlike when I was a parent, juggling a job, the Guard and other children, now I had more time to reflect and was reminded of my kids as well as my childhood and growing up. I also began talking to my father more often, and our conversations often turned to things that happened when I was little and never understood. It has brough healing and understanding, and we are closer than ever, but it also provoked a reckoning of sorts. My main point was we really can't know why people seek Reconciliation, and the most outwardly pious and seemingly bland people often had a very different nature when they were young. When I was scheduling my appointment and gave the reason, I mentioned myocarditis and then added "seems like everyone is doing it now, but I had it before it was fashionable!"
The receptionist laughed and said "You know, that's true." Acute myocarditis presents like a heart attack and the treatment was the same. In my case, there was no damage to the heart whatsoever, because what happened was that the heart was compressed by surrounding tissue, so when that compression relented, I felt better. Recovery took a few weeks, and the strangest thing was how I would just sort of stop when I had become overexerted. I mean that literally, I would come to an abrupt halt and have to immediately seek rest. It was like an invisible leash. With time, it got longer and longer and finally disappeared. My current bout involves mild chest pain and higher blood pressure, but no hard stop. I just stop myself when I feel it because I don't want things to get worse. I also think my blood pressure meds contribute to greater BP sensitivity. Muldoon could probably explain why. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at May 02, 2026 09:32 AM (ZOv7s) 127

Black Tea and Coffee are excellent when “dieting” or fasting. Tannins (polyphenols) have a good effect on the critters in our guts, too.
I’ve surmised a lot of the distress we complained about is caused by excessive glucose. It might be a bit simplistic (maybe not) but lab techs ex., use Agar to feed bacteria on slides for study. A huge load of sugars in our guts probably creates an imbalance, if chronic. Posted by: Common Tater at May 02, 2026 09:33 AM (HhTfM) 131

I’m reading “Age of Jackson” by Schlesinger.
Not much has changed. The question then as well, something along the lines of how can Democracy work? Can’t have the wealthy or “natural aristocracy” run everything. Farmers, tradesman, working people should have a say too, or they will become dispossessed. The election of Andy Jackson really freaked a lot of people out. Now guys like Hamilton thought it perfectly natural that big government and big business should work together. Others were concerned that the large banks would become the de facto government, and run everything. Nothing ever changes it seems, just the names maybe. HONOLULU (Island News) -- A newly-formed coalition on Oʻahu is asking the public to help document immigration enforcement activity, launching a hotline to report sightings of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
Posted by: Common Tater at May 02, 2026 09:33 AM (HhTfM) Food has nothing to do with stress. Our priest that is an excellent confessor gives very theologically-oriented homilies. They put Mrs. Cop to sleep, but since I'm a lay Dominican (Study is one of charisms of the Order of Preachers) I find them interesting but not exciting. Our new-ish Nigerian priest probably gives the most enthusiastic homilies. He's very animated and does not just stand at the ambo. He can be funny, too. He made a comment, "My married brother told me that as a married man he can either be right, or be happy and just agree with his wife." I used to have a feeling of permanence in my life; it’s comforting. But no more… lots of changes some not at all pleasant (like the passing of dear relatives).
We should just turn all decisions over to AI and stop worrying. Posted by: Retired Buckeye Cop is now an engineer at May 02, 2026 09:52 AM (ksbjf) --- Yes, and some people feel more comfortable confessing outside of their parish. During Advent and Lent, there are Penance Services where lots of priests from other parishes participate. At the same time, people tend to stay local. My parish is somewhat unique in that there are two locations that were once separate and have been merged, and there remains a "student" and "townie" identity at each one, though it is fading over time. The liberal Catholics (overwhelmingly Boomers) still identify with the student parish, even though many now live in other parishes. The upshot is the the Church is far from monolithic, even within the Roman Rite. For example, there are parishes sponsored by various orders who exist outside the territorial diocesan structure. All I’m getting at, gut problems and related chronic TMI issues are very much remedied or improved by cutting out excessive sugar, carbs, glucose.
Starve ‘em out, and a more healthy balance will automagically occur, and fairly rapidly. Tannins are especially helpful in this regard, (though probably not when loaded with cream and sugar). Tea especially is under study for this, and also oral health and gum disease. The “bad” bacteria do not like polyphenols. Posted by: Common Tater at May 02, 2026 10:01 AM (HhTfM) 197

Posted by: Skip at May 02, 2026 10:01 AM (Ia/+0) --- There's an article in the archives of First Things that suggests the Sexual Revolution was the result of the collapsed birth rates during WW II. Women typically marry older men rather then exact contemporaries, and so by the late 1960s, there was a massive shortage of marriageable men vs the number of women, because the Early Boomer women were seeking mates among War Baby men, a shortfall in the millions. This meant that men had a target-rich environment, and could high-grade the women, so those left behind resorted to more promiscuity as a way of securing commitment. When men realized they could have the milk without buying the cow, they exploited this, and that was where abortion suddenly became the Most Important Thing Ever, because "nice girls" would never carry condoms or use The Pill, and if an "accident" happened, a single mother would likely never find a decent man. This is why, to this very day, feminists describe children as a "punishment," which in a way it was for their moral transgression. (cont) Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Prayers up for those that know they need them but have not asked us for them; Prayers up for those that need them but don’t know it yet; and Prayers up for those who pray alone, asking for help in silence, and whose prayers are known but to God! Prayers up even for all "our" politicians who have decided that their 10% graft and power are still far more desirable than their honor or integrity, may they see the error of their ways, repent, and become true representatives of we the people! And lastly, prayers up for President Trump, keep him and our beloved country safe from harm and may the many forces of corruption and evil arrayed against both him and our country be rendered ineffective and their plans come to naught! (cont) By the same token, according to the article, the collapse of the Hayes Code and the "burn your bra" movement were the result of "leftover women" who were now on the brink of 30 who were reduced to pulling out all the stops - and yes, this would have applied in Hollywood, too.
What this did was undercut younger women who tried to retain traditional morality, and one sees this plainly by the 1980s where mainstream entertainment essentially mocks virginity until marriage as archaic and lame. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at May 02, 2026 10:17 AM (ZOv7s) 223

Exercise does not extend life as much as it extends the quality of life while you live.
Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at May 02, 2026 10:18 AM (Lw/3D) --- I disagree. I think exercise extends life in several ways. The first is that you avoid a ton of hazards like diabetes and the complications that come from a sedentary/obese lifestyle. You also gain resilience. I have been repeatedly told that my overall good health, which is maintained by frequent exercise, has helped me pull through health complications that would have killed someone with a lower CON score. Posted by: Braenyard ======== Far too many doctors spout studies that they themselves have not conducted. It is probably safe to say that roughly 50 percent of all studies including medical are garbage and 50 percent represent some form of the 'truth'. Dietary studies are particularly bad because a) you cannot feed people a controlled diet for decades, b) they rely then on self reporting, c) too many extraneous variables outside the study exist, d) sampling errors and panel study survival (they keep in the study over time). But unless you actually conducted the study yourself, everything else is basically appeal to authority in our society. Too complex for even the autodidact to do more than take a stab at figuring out what is truth and what is garbage. Basically, we will all die sometime and our individual circumstances have more to do our lifespan than general nostrums and prognostications by our 'informed' betters.
