"For right now, the total blockade is the least expensive route."

There was a total blockade on the German Empire in WW1 and the impact was felt primarily on the civilian population. That makes sense, actually. Those with weapons will take what is needed from those that don't have weapons.

That's why we cannot allow food convoys to travel to Iran (whatever food that would be in the ships will end up in IRGC hands) nor can we attempt airdropped supplies of food for the same reason. Delivering food via any clandestine pipelines that deliver weapons will expose those pipelines (by the more well fed members of the pipeline or those members of the pipeline that magically have food to give/sell).

26 Pakistan has opened at least 6 new land trade routes going into Iran, so there will be no total blockade. Still I don’t think they really matters, because the blockade was never about stopping food from going in. It is about stopping oil from going out, and destroying Iran’s economy by starving it of operating funds. And all Iranian oil has to through Kharg, and the straits.

Still, while this will work over time, it may take several months to work. Politically, Trump probably doesn’t have that much time, for we have become a very impatient people. That’s why the Iranians are acting so cocky right now, they think they can wait him out.

Posted by: Tom Servo at May 01, 2026 05:28 AM (H1WUE)

27 I think right now Trump is just waiting to see if running out of storage space and having to stop pumping oil will scare some sense into them, and if it doesn't, then that will probably be the end of the cease-fire, and he will resume correcting their mindset by blowing them up.

It might be possible to export oil via trains given that "a single 100-car train can transport approximately 3 million gallons of crude oil" (https://tinyurl.com/387aacdf has the google query).

37 "Oh, my mistake. They're up 49 times over the same period last year."

Samsung is a Chaebol*. SK Hynix is part of the SK Group (another Chaebol.)

I learned about Chaebols when listening to a fellow on YouTube who goes by "Asian Boss" in a video where he was talking about South Korean's obsession with American burgers. There's a chapter about Chaebols and how they work. I'll link to the video cued up to that chapter:

https://youtu.be/WBregydMsqw

Anyway... This whole Chaebol thing strikes me as family run where family is a lot like the mafia. Are they going to shake down the market and price fix like wild every chance they get? Absolutely. The convictions of the big three in past for price fixing pretty much indicates that they'll do it again because it works, and they don't really care if they get caught.

Even if they opened rail lines I cannot imagine where they would find enough tank cars to make a difference. Tank cars that are very easy to spot and destroy.

Yes, there are rail connections between Pakistan and Iran. But I don’t believe Pakistan has the docking facilities to transfer any oil to ships to be sold internationally, which is what Iran needs,.

Also, 3 million gallons sounds like a lot, until you realize that the average long range tanker carries 15 million to 25 million gallons. (But oil transport is usually mentioned in terms of 42 gallon barrels)

63 The Pulitzer. The Man Booker. One would hope the fiction books winning these prizes would be good reads. Memorable. Moving.

I'd hoped that print would be better than films, but the judges for both are of the same woke mindset, so there's a lot of trash involving "fascism," "systemic racism," "toxic" this or that, and "queer."

And far too many that are boring fucking grinds through someone's stupid life of poverty.

McCarthy's "Blood Meridian" was a grind, but a good one. "The Orphan Master's Son" was, too, but OMG it is cinematic.

I'm wading through "Flesh," the 2025 Man Booker winner, by some Hungarian guy, and it's OK, but when I'm done, if I finish it, I think I'll re-read Moby Dick for the dozenth or so time. I have the Modern Library print of it which is illustrated by Rockwell Kent. Call me Ishmael.

64 Aside from working out, I need to pick up a couple of things at the store, and am thinking of passing by the nearby Capital One bank branch to ask about higher-interest savings accounts. The bank I've been using for years is great, but the yield is only .4%. According to what I've seen on the 'Net, Cap One offers 3%. They have CDs too, as does my current savings bank, but I don't want to tie up my money for six months to several years.

There are higher-yield online banks, but I'm not sure I trust them. Have any of you used an online bank?

Excellent point; I have been blind to the difference between gallons and barrels. The former is much smaller than the latter.

Since I don't believe the Russians are willing to prioritize Iranian oil above their own, I don't see the Caspian sea as a way for the IRGC to meaningfully export oil.
