======== See, I long ago advocated for studios to take these kinds of risks with their IP. Not everything needs to be a $250 million blockbuster. Clayface, with his Batman connections, is well-known enough of an IP to take some kind of risk with while assuming strong enough box office to justify smaller risks. Clayface reportedly only costs about $40 million. Combine that brand recognition with the horror genre, and DCU has a guaranteed return on investment here. James Gunn is smart. The Rogues Gallery from Batman is ripe for cinematic adaptations if done right.
Many of them have sympathetic backgrounds, which can garner sympathy from the audience. However, to show them *right* you have to demonstrate they are psychologically incapable of redemption. That's why they are villains within the DCU. Kind of like the Darklords from the Ravenloft D&D setting. They are all complete monsters, no matter their background, because they will never, ever atone for the crimes that sent them down the path of becoming a Darklord. To each their own and I'm not intending what I'm about to say as judgment on other posters, so I'm clear here.
I am unable to comprehend how so many people have the physical time in their day to both consume as much media (Esp. movies and TV) as they do, and to also CARE so much about it. Maybe I'm just at a place in my life where I don't feel like I have either the time or the mental energy to fit it in. I get up, work all day, sit down for a few minutes, cook dinner, feed the family, clean up sometimes, maybe do some laundry or whatever else needs doing, then at the end of the day I have about an hour before it's time for bed. And I'm not spending my weekends going out of my way to see Hollywood squeeze yet another drop of blood out of the stones that are all of the current IPs they've been throat-fucking for 20 years. Here's something interesting.
Roger Avery has been trying to make an adaptation of Paradise Lost for years. He's finally gotten it greenlit... By a small AI studio that's going to make what supposedly will look like a $300 million film for about $10 million. I'm actually intrigued. Now...what can we say of John Milton's "Paradise Lost"? ...Certainly we know that he was trying to describe the struggle between good and evil, right? (picks up an apple from his desk) Okay. The most intriguing character, as we all know from our reading, was Satan. Now, was Milton trying to tell us that being bad was more fun than being good? Okay...don't write this down, but I find Milton probably as boring as you find Milton. Mrs. Milton found him boring, too. He, uh, he's a little bit long-winded, he doesn't translate very well into our generation, and his jokes are terrible. But that does not relieve you from your responsibility for this material! Now, I'm waiting for reports from some of you! (students pay no attention to him) Listen, I'm not joking! This is my job! Posted by: Professor Jennings at May 01, 2026 04:39 PM (Riz8t) 90

I was barely into DC Comics in the 80s, was much more into Marvel, so I had never heard of Clayface until I came across this movie coming out.
It doesn’t appeal much to me. I’ll check out Spider-Noire for the same reasons as Ace. The rest on the list don’t seem too appealing, either. Coyote vs. ACME might be OK but I’ll wait to see some reviews to come to a conclusion about ever watching it. Dog Stars might be alright, I always took a liking to apocalypse flicks since Mad Max, but this one looks like it will only be marginally more interesting than The Road which was so tedious and boring I’ve forgotten most of it. The key to Lovecraftian horror is the whole setting, the cinematic universe they live in, and that setting is here and now, our rational, logical, deterministic, observable universe. The characters are just like us because they are here with us and share our understanding of everything. And when the story shatters the veil between the character's tiny world and the vast cosmic horror it puts a few cracks into our's as well.
It feels a bit dangerous. But I think that can be mitigated in part by a nice Cthulhu plushi you can squeeze and hug. Posted by: banana Dream at May 01, 2026 04:56 PM (3uBP9) 154

Hollywood continues to try and appeal to the lowest common demominator of humanity. It seems to me that every one of these potential cluster F*cks are aimed squarely at the narrow-minded, self-indulgent, stereotype loving half wits whose freetime is spent trying to convince normal people of their superiority. They wouldn't know originality if it took a healthy dump on their face....and would spend their limited energy trying to be offended by that originality.
I hereby remove "entertainment" from the Hollywood library and replace it with MUNDANEMENT™ . Posted by: Orson at May 01, 2026 04:59 PM (dIske) 167

Zebras evolved in subsaharan Africa with lions, human hunters, and hyenas. The Brits scoffed at the locals for not domesticating the zebra and then they tried domesticating them and ... also failed. Mostly.
I think a few were able to be hitched to wagons but only if the other three equids were actual imported equus. tl;dr zebras are assholes. Humans have literally had better luck domesticating the cheetah, which is a big housecat that wants skritches and treats. Posted by: gKWVE at May 01, 2026 05:02 PM (gKWVE) 173

>They are making references to Hungry Hungry Hippos
It's either a contractual obligation (as _Battleship_ was) or another of the intentionally bad horror movies based on a character that's just lapsed into the public domain. >a horror movie in which characters make sensible, logical decisions. Most horror movies generally show people making reasonable decisions given what they know at the time. Also, viewers sitting in a comfortable, safe movie theater severely underestimate the irrationality of people who are in shock and scared for their lives. In general, most movies don't have the plot holes or idiot ball problems the average viewer thinks they do because the viewer is only half paying attention and ignores most of what they're shown on screen. I think there's a similar graph to the girlfriend Crazy/Hot one but for animals. And that is Cute/Deadly.
Pandas? They are bears still I think. Pretty cute, probably could still eat you if they wanted but they are kind of dorks. So more towards cute than deadly. .75 cute, .3 deadly. Kittens are .95 cute, .04 deadly, I'd recon. But hippos? They are the very pareto front of cute, deadly optimization. Results of studies of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), which is inherited only from the mother, showed a great deal of diversity among individuals and strongly supported the idea that wild horses from many different geographic areas contributed to the domestic horse. The mtDNA data clearly indicated that there were multiple sites of domestication, with a large number of mares in the first populations, and that genetic input from local wild horses had been introduced into the domestic gene pool as domesticated horses spread.
The mtDNA data also showed that the modern horse is a mixture of ancient lineages, all of which can be traced back to an “Ancestral Mare,” which lived 130,000 to 160,000 years ago; thus, there is no clear mtDNA signature for modern horse breeds.
