Economy Grows By Decent 2% Annualized Rate Despite Fuel Price Inflation; New Jobless Claims Fall to Near Record Lows
Via Ed Morrissey. It's a decent growth figure, rebounding from the weak 0.5% in the fourth quarter of 2025.
Real gross domestic product (GDP) increased at an annual rate of 2.0 percent in the first quarter of 2026 (January, February, and March), according to the advance estimate released today by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. In the fourth quarter of 2025, real GDP increased 0.5 percent. The contributors to the increase in real GDP in the first quarter were investment, exports, consumer spending, and government spending. Imports, which are a subtraction in the calculation of GDP, also increased. ... Real final sales to private domestic purchasers, the sum of consumer spending and gross private fixed investment, increased 2.5 percent in the first quarter, compared with an increase of 1.8 percent in the fourth quarter.The nominal rate of growth -- unadjusted for inflation -- came in a huge 5.6%. That's a good sign, because the current inflation is temporary due to Iran throttling the Strait of America.

Well...we were getting flat jobs numbers for like a year. Still are, actually.
Which, in a country with, at best, flat population growth and very likely population decreases on net, means that the job market is actually fairly healthy.
The jobless claims released today is about people losing jobs and not getting new ones. Lowest in decades means a solid job market for those with jobs.

This is being matched with increased production from America and effective increased production from the Middle East as more countries find ways around the strait (UAE broke ground on a new pipeline 3 weeks ago that should be done by late summer or so to bypass the strait...all while it's pledging increased production overall).

The price of beef is high because of the confluence of two things.
The first is the 3 years ago, the Biden AG limited the size of herds. And then, there was a draught.
It takes 3 years for a calf to become big enough to slaughter for beef. So, we're dealing with one of the smallest beef herds per capita in modern American history.
It won't get fixed in the next few months. We will, though, see historically low beef prices by the 2028 election, though.

The lawsuit against Cloudera explains why. I suspect a lot more of those are coming in going after the H1B pipeline providers and the big hirers that rig job applications so as to approve H1B to replace American workers. The other work visas are also now under sustained scrutiny.
And the second reason is that with companies going to AI for a lot of generic coding issues, the demand for coders is going to go down.
If one is wise, jump to the security side as AI is going to reveal so many ancient and new exploits in code that there will be a surge in demand for those capable of patching security hole ridden software.

Hassett seems somewhat prone to dumbass statements, but he's correct here - the brightest signs are the ones not even typically discussed, especially guvamint employment.
The dead-flat economy under the vegetable administration only barely (or did it, even?) managed to avoid disastrous negative macro numbers thanks to insane wasteful harmful govt. spending and hiring.
It took 2 years to really begin to revive the real economy under Trump 1.0. This time there's a substantial and healthy reduction in govt. spending and hiring, absent the first time. Just hope for the sake of the pathetic electorate that the macro is really starting to move by late summer.

Because in red states, a lot of state legislators and lesser officials are actually stealth moderate Democrats in ideology.
They can't run as who they really are so they hide and call themselves Republicans and conservatives. And the big donors in many states are more liberal than the base voters and so they fund these types of "That is Not Who We Are" type candidates.

From other analysis this is a serious challenge to President Scheinbaum and the Morena ruling party as it implicates the entire government. I ended up becoming an unofficial jobs counselor for our department advisees because most of my colleagues were the sort to go directly to grad school rather than work. I spent years after undergrad working in different jobs including the military before I went into academia.
FWIW, every career field goes through slumps, sometimes for years, though not all are as screwed up as IT because of the cheap labor visa pipelines and outsourcing.
But one of the key things is being willing to relocate to get that initial job and often doing scutwork for a couple of years.

Young adults learning consequences of their own actions from the outside world and recovering from those builds character. Yet, it will still hurt a good parent to see their kids suffer. All you can do is be supportive and try to help keep the episode in perspective for the kid.

I had a GF who started out in Chip Fabs as a trainer and wound up after a dislocation doing biotech stuff. (And by that I mean running a wet bench for a lab)

Yep, masses of illegals are deadweight and caused a spike in inflationary spending as they consume more than they produce. Capital investment is spiking in the US BECAUSE of tariffs and uncertainty in maintaining global supply chains and that will result in us living better, producing more, with less inputs. Plus jobs. And reshoring and producing oil and gas provides jobs, keeps inflation and price spikes minimal even with the Gulf being affected.
Demand-pull used by Trump works to our favor; Democrat demand-push economic policies doesn't. Trump gets rid of useless government policies while doing useful ones and allows the markets to work creating demand that pulls investment.
Democrats instead mandate economic policies like wages, work conditions, DEI that push the markets to try to fix what the Dems have broken. EV is an example of push type policies that the Dems have done.

I am not cognizant of you and your daughter's situation, but in my own situation, there was a time when I regarded our daughter as the bane of this household. If there was something stupid to do, she would do it without devoting any thought to how the outcome from having done so could redound to her detriment.
What irked me most about such goings on was how she steadfastly refused to see that her subsequent travails were brought upon her by her. I would not accept any "whaddabouttas" or "itwasnotmyfault" utterances from her an so we would clash.
A decade or more down the line, with her out on her own, she has largely shed that mindset and instead deals with the path that her actions and inactions have laid out for her. That she has a partner who is more grounded in what's real has helped, too. Our relationship is improved. I have dropped worrying about her in any small matters in favor of trying to help her see where she can exercise her talents in ways that benefit both her and those important to her in her life.

Do watch though for alcohol and other substance abuse signs. That is where females in particular can go off the rails. Especially given other medications handed out as candy as alcohol reacts with a lot of them. It often becomes a self medicating process for our sometimes personal and societal depression causing events.
Once I was diagnosed with inflammatory arthritis, I stopped drinking totally simply because of drug interactions and to be honest, some depression due to infirmities.
One trick I used to do to maintain conviviality at faculty and social events and driving afterwards is get sparkling soda with a twist of lime which resembles a G&T. You can drink all you want of those with no risk except maybe to going to the bathroom a bit and yet look like you are not being a party pooper.
Not really safe in this day and age to get blottoed anyway in public--too many predators hang around inside and outside of bars.

Thanks and very true that there are a number of substitutes that add no calories and are even healthful (eg a Bloody Mary with no alcohol).
I still use wine and beer for cooking and for the most part, cheap box wine works just fine for something like coq a vin. Also keep Marsala and Sherry around for specific dishes. Very useful for flavoring and sauces and since you don't care if it tends toward becoming vinegary from storage in the refrigerator, keeps for a long time but you don't WANT to drink it.

I spent enough time drinking in my youth to know my rather high limits but have no interest in drinking other than a very occasional glass of wine on special dinners with my wife at home.
Illegal drugs or even abusing prescription drugs never appealed to me. I end up throwing out most of those prescribed after operations. I have to take enough pills nowadays, I don't want more of them.
