Fifty years ago on Saturday, an innocuous fourth inning at Dodger Stadium gave way to an indelible moment in baseball -- and American -- history. He glanced to his right and saw the trespassers huddled over, unfurling an American flag. “I can see the guy pull out something real shiny,” Monday told the LA Times in a story published last Sunday. “It turned out to be one of those gigantic cans of lighter fluid. Did you know home plate used to be an actual plate? In early baseball, players sometimes used dinner plates as markers, which is how “home plate” got its name. In talks with one of the nuns, I learned they have scrapped homework assignments, other than reading, almost totally. Instead, they have the students write by hand, in cursive, all reports and papers during their class time. According to the head nun, this solves a boatload of issues. Namely, no papers dreamt up by AI, no electronics at all in the classroom, and cursive promotes all sorts of learning and physical benefits for each of the students. These kids' standardized test scores are incredible.

Tomorrow will be a slog: mostly Interstate driving on good roads, but it's about a six-hour drive -- which for me, with pit stops and obeying speed limits, means seven or a bit more.
Gasoline in KS seemed about .30 cheaper per gallon than in Da Swamp. That one company, JumpStart, which offered premium (93) at $3.09 in Salina? My car has lost gas mileage on it. Maybe it has more than 10% ethanol, or my car just does not run optimally on premium (it's rated for 87).
I did see a Sinclair station with a large plaster dinosaur model, painted green, and gassed up there this morning just because.

I don't think I have ever had mezcal. Never bought any, and would not buy a bottle with a worm in it. The worm may be dead, but there will be dissolved worm guck in the liquor. Who needs that?
And it's not like the worm got there honestly, from being in the mash made from the agave. Yeah, there may be some in the mash, but it gets fermented, and then put in a still to get the resulting alcohol. No solids are supposed to come over. You don't get potato bugs in vodka, or corn borers in bourbon.

They were all over Denver in '97-'01. We used to have some in the suburbs of Da Swamp -- I seem to recall seeing one on Airline Highway, U.S. 61, when I was a teen -- but like Gulf and Amoco, and our old local supplier Tenneco, they're long gone.

Bar I used to frequent in my youth had a mezcal worm eating contest. Who could eat the most worms in a year, and by eating them, it meant getting to the bottom of the bottle. Sometimes you got lucky and the bottle was almost empty. Other times, not.
The guy that won it ate something like 32 worms. The second place contestant ate like 12. No idea whether he is still alive or not. Or just permanently pickled.

Here in Iowa, in the past year or so, E15 seems to have replaced the E10 that was typically the cheapest blend commonly available. Maybe that's what you got into. A few years ago, we took a road trip out west, and I noticed that I got a couple MPG better mileage. Possibly because I was cruising on the highway, but also probably because they had pure gasoline without the shitty ethanol. Around here you can get pure gas, with no ethanol, but it's a lot more expensive. I buy that for the mower and snow blower.

I can get E0 at an Exxon convenience store near my house. Usually it's .70/gal. more than the E10 regular. But the week before I left, it was the *same* price as the 87!

Decompressing after RV 'camping'* at San Clemente State Beach with long time friends this weekend. Yesterday evening some of our adult kids joined us for dinner. It was a fun few days. Weather was warm sunny days, cool nights and some rain overnight last night which is kind of unusual but not unheard of this time of year.

I agree. But what the party leaders fear more than anything is losing power. Violence has worked for them for a number of years but I think they are running out of runway.
I've been watching the reaction to last nights attempted assassination on X and it just feels different. Anger and disgust with the left is building and they know it.

Except gasoline is not made made from dinosaurs. The source material is single-celled marine life, both plants and animals. That is the only category of organic matter available in sufficient quantity to account for the vast amounts of oil and gas bound up in the Earth's crust. The higher up the food chain you go, the smaller the total mass of critters on that level.
There is plenty of oil production from rocks both more ancient and rocks younger than the Mesozoic rocks laid down during the age of the dinosaurs.

But the Dems are right now saying when we win we are coming after you. To put you in jail. Not just leaders - anyone who "collaborated." Regular rank and file ICE and CBP agents. And they will pack the courts so that they will be perfectly legal to do it. I have yet to see any sign that they think its time to reduce the heat. My state just elected a guy who thinks killing Republicans is just peachy to be the Attorney General.

Around here, when they first switched to E15, they mostly just peeled the "up to 10% ethanol" labels off the pumps, leaving only the warning stickers about "Only for use in vehicles newer than . . ." blah blah blah. Now they all seem to be calling E-15, with 15% ethanol, "Unleaded 88", because it carries an 88 octane rating instead of the typical 87 octane for regular. Not to be confused with E-85, which is 85% ethanol.

He has not changed it since I set it up about 4 years ago. It's his own router, and it has moved to different apartments a few times over that period. When he moved in with his girlfriend, I thought she'd make him change it, but she thought it was a clever. She's a keeper!

Making the Party leaders learn some fear is fine but that doesn't fix the situation. They talk, but what gets the one guy to act is the multitudes of their rank and file all repeating it and trying to talk some courage into *someone*.
A change in behavior by the leaders won't change the crazies or the nameless minions that encourage them. It may get their ire directed at the leaders for a while for being insufficiently pure. But that only relieves the problem for us until they get new, acceptable leaders.
For the situation to change, it is the rank and file of the Democrats' support that needs to be afraid of the consequences of all the demonization. Karen needs to feel less secure in mindlessly repeating her bile.

All this was a big deal during the Cold War. When I was working on nukyler-related stuff in the early 80s there was much harumphing and opining and experting on line of succession, and "war termination" and other exotic topics, and I think this is when it got set up beyond the Senate pro tem.
Think I recall the humorous observation was that the Sec. of Education (brand new at the time) was 13th in the line of succession, or something.

I think the best job by far is Ambassador to the Czech Republic. Not many duties, and the Ambassador gets to live in a 65 room Neo-Baroque palace that the US ended up with title to after WW2.
