Monday still gets letters 50 years after saving American flag from being burned Fifty years ago on Saturday, an innocuous fourth inning at Dodger Stadium gave way to an indelible moment in baseball -- and American -- history. On April 25, 1976, the Dodgers hosted the Cubs in the rubber match of a three-game series. In the bottom of the fourth inning, two fans jumped the left-center field fence and hurried onto the outfield grass. Chicago center fielder Rick Monday noted a sound that didn’t match the rhythm of the game. He glanced to his right and saw the trespassers huddled over, unfurling an American flag. “I can see the guy pull out something real shiny,” Monday told the LA Times in a story published last Sunday. “It turned out to be one of those gigantic cans of lighter fluid. They were dousing it.”Seriously - would any of today's players do this under similar circumstances? ----- Speaking of baseball, this struck me as pretty kewl! ![]() From Sovey on X Did you know home plate used to be an actual plate? April feels like a bridge between collections and major events. There is plenty of pre-Met anticipation, but we must get to May for the Met itself. What April has delivered is a wave of exciting collaborations with joyful prints, beachside luxury, and fun silhouettes. Here’s a closer look at four standout partnerships making waves right now. Le Sirenuse: 75th Anniversary Resort Vibes with Emporio Sirenuse Expansion The iconic Positano hotel Le Sirenuse is celebrating its 75th anniversary in style with the opening of Le Sirenuse Mare, a new standalone beach club in Nerano on the Amalfi Coast (opened April 23, 2026). This passion project from the Sersale family blends contemporary design, artisanal details, and Mediterranean glamour. Highlights include sun-lounging terraces, a 180-cover restaurant, three bars, and—most exciting for fashion lovers—the first Emporio Sirenuse flagship boutique outside Positano. Expect signature chintz prints, date palm motifs on embroidered cabana fabrics, resort wear, and home collections that distill the brand’s “new dolce vita” ethos. It’s the ultimate fusion of hospitality and lifestyle, perfect for channeling effortless Italian coastal chic.
![]() Giorgio Armani: Armani/Archivio Capsule Revives 1979–1994 Icons In a heartfelt tribute to the late designer’s legacy, Giorgio Armani has launched the second chapter of Armani/Archivio. This capsule reproduces 13 men’s and women’s looks from collections spanning 1979 to 1994, making archival pieces available for purchase (rolling out in select stores from early May). Shot by ERL founder Eli Russell Linnetz, the campaign emphasizes timeless tailoring, essential construction, and the iconic Armani jacket as a defining element. Presented during Milan Design Week with a custom installation, it’s a beautiful bridge between heritage and contemporary culture—proving Mr. Armani’s designs remain eternally relevant.
![]() Barbour x FARM Rio: British Heritage Meets Brazilian Joy This dynamic duo has reunited for a second collection (following last year’s hit), bringing Barbour’s waxed jackets and countryside classics together with FARM Rio’s vibrant, hand-painted prints and tropical energy. The Spring/Summer 2026 drop includes quilted jackets, showerproof trench coats, floral midi dresses, graphic tees, and accessories—think daisies and cornflowers reimagined in bold, dopamine-boosting motifs. Available now across the UK, EU, US, and for the first time in Brazil, it celebrates shared values of nature, craftsmanship, and expressive design. Perfect for layering joy into spring outerwear.
![]() (I have already grabbed this!) Dolce & Gabbana x Ray-Ban: Reimagined Aviators with Italian Flair Just in time for sunnier days, Dolce & Gabbana has teamed up with Ray-Ban to reinterpret the legendary Aviator silhouette (nearing its 90th anniversary). The collection features fresh takes on the Shooter and Outdoorsman II models, infused with D&G’s bold Italian heritage—think premium details, distinctive frames, and that unmistakable glamorous edge. Launched mid-April, these sunglasses blend timeless cool with contemporary attitude, making them a must-have accessory for the season. ![]() These collaborations highlight fashion’s love for meaningful crossovers: celebrating anniversaries, preserving legacies, and mixing cultural energies for something fresh and wearable. Stay tuned for a wedding season trend edition, and of course the Met itself. ----- Thanks, Piper! Although I'm kinda surprised you didn't mention Melania in tonight's fashion segment. Billy Idol. A few (must be almost 20 now!) years ago he released an album and a new single. There was a video, about 15 minutes long, released along with it. Back when cable TV had music video channels and on demand.
The video was all about how Billy had gotten clean and it had taken him some time. And now he was back to doing music. They kept teasing little 1-2 second clips of the new single, something about a Lemon Tree. They got to the end and played the new song in total - it was like Baby Baby 1-2-3 I want to climb your lemon tree! All I could think was Billy get back on the Horse. Attended a fundraiser for our Catholic grade school in Oak Ridge last night. It's run by the Dominican nuns. Since Oak Ridge is full to the brim with Federally employed STEM Ph.Ds and contractors, St. Mary's is heavily STEM oriented also. Monstrously so.
In talks with one of the nuns, I learned they have scrapped homework assignments, other than reading, almost totally. Instead, they have the students write by hand, in cursive, all reports and papers during their class time. According to the head nun, this solves a boatload of issues. Namely, no papers dreamt up by AI, no electronics at all in the classroom, and cursive promotes all sorts of learning and physical benefits for each of the students. These kids' standardized test scores are incredible. It was very interesting. Posted by: Tonypete at April 26, 2026 10:13 PM (Kyh8Y) 30
I didn't sleep well my last night in Salina, but caught about ninety minutes' nap this afternoon. Since our hostess at this little hotel does not set out the coffee, bagels, etc., until about 6:30, I don't want to wake much earlier than 6. A little melatonin will probably help.
Tomorrow will be a slog: mostly Interstate driving on good roads, but it's about a six-hour drive -- which for me, with pit stops and obeying speed limits, means seven or a bit more. Gasoline in KS seemed about .30 cheaper per gallon than in Da Swamp. That one company, JumpStart, which offered premium (93) at $3.09 in Salina? My car has lost gas mileage on it. Maybe it has more than 10% ethanol, or my car just does not run optimally on premium (it's rated for 87). I did see a Sinclair station with a large plaster dinosaur model, painted green, and gassed up there this morning just because. Never bought any, and would not buy a bottle with a worm in it. The worm may be dead, but there will be dissolved worm guck in the liquor. Who needs that? And it's not like the worm got there honestly, from being in the mash made from the agave. Yeah, there may be some in the mash, but it gets fermented, and then put in a still to get the resulting alcohol. No solids are supposed to come over. Bar I used to frequent in my youth had a mezcal worm eating contest. Who could eat the most worms in a year, and by eating them, it meant getting to the bottom of the bottle. Sometimes you got lucky and the bottle was almost empty. Other times, not. The guy that won it ate something like 32 worms. The second place contestant ate like 12. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 26, 2026 10:13 PM (fcdZC) Here in Iowa, in the past year or so, E15 seems to have replaced the E10 that was typically the cheapest blend commonly available. Maybe that's what you got into. A few years ago, we took a road trip out west, and I noticed that I got a couple MPG better mileage. Possibly because I was cruising on the highway, but also probably because they had pure gasoline without the shitty ethanol. Around here you can get pure gas, with no ethanol, but it's a lot more expensive. I buy that for the mower and snow blower. Posted by: a.moron at April 26, 2026 10:26 PM (X5Jzz) 74

Posted by: 496 at April 26, 2026 10:21 PM (Ouiyj) Except gasoline is not made made from dinosaurs. The source material is single-celled marine life, both plants and animals. That is the only category of organic matter available in sufficient quantity to account for the vast amounts of oil and gas bound up in the Earth's crust. The higher up the food chain you go, the smaller the total mass of critters on that level. There is plenty of oil production from rocks both more ancient and rocks younger than the Mesozoic rocks laid down during the age of the dinosaurs. This is a profound, transcendent spiritual experience the vast majority (but not all) of astronauts experience at some point when they view the earth. It happens in LEO big time, but for the 24 men, now 28 people who've travelled for enough to see the "Blue Marble" with their own eyes, earth as small blue "oasis in nothingness", the effect is really something. Edgar Mitchell, Apollo 14, had perhaps the most profound experience of all. A reporter asked the Artemis crew if they experienced this: https://is.gd/oxrYjO Reid Wiseman said "Yes...". The first thing he did when he got on the recovery ship was to ask the captain if he could speak with the chaplain. Many years ago, I assumed that the huge majority of people would have some sort of epiphany or whatever, and “come around” when they would eventually see with their own eyes that a lot of what they were taught was pure malevolent bullshit. Growing up and maturing and seeing the real world and the rest of it. That was a … mistake.
What’s concerning to me is that, generally speaking, people don’t come back. You’ll see historical interviews with elderly Soviets or Nazis or Cubans or whatever, and they are completely unrepentant and still believe in the righteousness of their cause. >>So, types, deletes, and all that, but this is not going to stop until the Left is afraid that it will happen to them.
I agree. But what the party leaders fear more than anything is losing power. Violence has worked for them for a number of years but I think they are running out of runway. - Making the Party leaders learn some fear is fine but that doesn't fix the situation. They talk, but what gets the one guy to act is the multitudes of their rank and file all repeating it and trying to talk some courage into *someone*. A change in behavior by the leaders won't change the crazies or the nameless minions that encourage them. It may get their ire directed at the leaders for a while for being insufficiently pure. But that only relieves the problem for us until they get new, acceptable leaders. For the situation to change, it is the rank and file of the Democrats' support that needs to be afraid of the consequences of all the demonization. Karen needs to feel less secure in mindlessly repeating her bile. Posted by: Methos at April 26, 2026 10:52 PM (vSvIl) 168

Believe first "replacement" VP was Ford, when Agnew resigned. LBJ couldn't have had one, there was no mechanism to make it happen at that time.
Speaker of the House, President pro tem of the Senate were next in line. Now it occurs to me that after those two, I am not sure there was a line of succession defined back then either. All this was a big deal during the Cold War. When I was working on nukyler-related stuff in the early 80s there was much harumphing and opining and experting on line of succession, and "war termination" and other exotic topics, and I think this is when it got set up beyond the Senate pro tem. Think I recall the humorous observation was that the Sec. of Education (brand new at the time) was 13th in the line of succession, or something. Its a reasonable argument, obviously it would be nice to see prominent lefties say something like, "Come on Trump's a moderate Democrat from the 90s, we need to stop calling him a NAZI even if we've gone further left" but the response amusing me. 90% "it was staged" and 10% "we need better aim guys!" Read the shooters "manifesto"". It's typical leftist bullshit and none it is true. But they hear it constantly on MSNBC, CNN, Bluesky and every other leftist site because that's what is put out from the top of today's Democrat Party.
- That is true, and it doesn't help that they are continuing to hear it. What I'm saying is they *have* heard it, and they now believe it, and there's no quick way, if any way at all, to undo that. I had Grok go over the history. The '60s - '70s saw a big fad of ESP and general "parapsychology" research -- there was a Perry Mason episode revolving around that. And US govt as well as the Rooskies did indeed do a lot of research into it, but they're all pretty embarrassed about it now, as nothing (at least they claim ....cue up X-files theme... came of it). And a lot of it was each side got worried the other side might stumble on something and there would be "pyschic gap", which drove a lot of it. We got afraid the Russians might come up with some physic spies, with mind control and telekinesis, so we'd better look into this ourselves... And the Russians were worried we might get the edge. Now there are plenty of people agreeing, but I see a number of "well I got the shot and I didn't get myocarditis either" and...it should be noted the argument FOR the clot shot was that a significant portion of those without it would die from COVID. And yet here we are, with the data saying the clot shot made you marginally more likely to die from COVID, and much more likely to die from a host of other issues. The retard carpet sniffer's manifesto is pathetic.
I don't think he even knows what he was doing in his protest to be martyr. Rode cross country in his choo choo train. I guess that's when he wrote it and sent to family. I especially liked the end part of "turning the other cheek" as I think he'll be doing a lot of that in prison. The best part of his outrage, other than obviously not killing President Trump or others, were the photos of buck nekkid in his metallic hypothermia blanket. Face down and cuffed like the trussed turkey he is. Obviously not wearing a bomb vest, but here's hoping he got reamed out in the event of a condom of plastic explosives. And also to get him used to prison. Later an ugly protester got arrested in her keffiyeh scarf, which rounded out the night for me. Thankful President Trump and all his men (and Melania and Karoline) are fine. Security will be improved from this day forward and was lax for whatever reason. Thankful this halfwit was not professional with his buckshot. And no, it did not work out too well. Sulla begat Caesar in a lot of ways. I don't agree with Duncan that Sulla was trying to turn the clock back to a Rome that rightfully did not exist anymore. The things that made the Republic work duty, honor, diligence were still just as valid. It is just that success fucked them. The loss of an existential threat turned people fucktarded. And the sad thing is Caesar did NOT follow Sulla's example and murder his enemies. He tried to do the more conciliatory(?) Thing and believe he could defeat his enemies on the battlefield but then once defeated, they would all work together to reform the system.
And he got murdered by those same enemies. Who then unleashed Marc Antony and Octavian (Augustus( who had no such qualms. Posted by: Aetius451AD work phone at April 27, 2026 12:30 AM (zZu0s) 348

Republicans job is simply to make sure it stays that way Posted by: Common Tater at April 26, 2026 11:13 PM (J48Co) Like in Europe, many on the Right (politicians) believe their job is to manage a massive, intrusive, powerful, profligate State BETTER. >> Captured asteroids by the looks of it. Mr. Hall had a good eye.
Two main theories. The other is impact. Big SMOD hit Mars and kicked up a debris ring that coalesced into Phobos and Deimos. Neither of those can be ruled out now. A third has popped up, and that's that Mars had a larger moon in the distant past, and that got broken up by an impact itself. What can rule them in or out is compositional analysis, determing the exact composition and isotope ratios of Phobos and Deimos vs Mars. JAXA has an upcoming mission to land on Phobos, with a planned launch date this year. It's a sample return mission, which will return a capsule of samples back to earth in 2031.
