This week's episode: Retired Gangster! Cat Women of the Moon! Have we seen Cat Women of the Moon before? So, I haven't been writing any reviews for a while as I have found myself hanging with some old favorites that I have reviewed previously. I figured no one wanted to reread the same stuff so the typewriter has been silent. But I figured it was time to bring things up to date. "Well Dio, what have I been sticking with?" you ask. Well, first is the Romeo Y Julieta 1875 Reserve. A classic for me and I tend to refer to it as Old Reliable. Always a good smoke. Balanced and smooth with no surprises. My "Go To" cigar. Then there was the San Cristobal Elegancia. Just a really fine mild cigar with a pleasant aroma from Nicaraguan tobaccos and an easy draw. And finally, there was the Cohiba...the standard by which so many are judged. I don't necessarily go along with all of that, but the Cohoba has never been a disappointment. I have several examples but lately I have enjoyed the Rubicon. It offers a blend of several Dominican, Honduran, and Nicaraguan filler tobaccos that produce a fine taste, easy smoke and pleasant experience. And at about $6-7 it doesn't terrorize the wallet. But into every nice day, a bit of rain must fall. So it was with a corojo-based cigar sold at the local golf course. Sealed in individual tubes "for freshness" they said, it was a pleasant looking cigar that should never have been taken from the tube. This stick was sold as a Specialty Cigar made exclusively for the golf course so I could not find the source supplier. More the pity as it would have earned them a strongly worded letter! A mild cigar, it was difficult to light, hard to keep lit, and a pain in the ass to relight. A tight draw, and uneven ash contributed to the regret of wasting $8 that would have been better spent on a beer. A shame too as I've had other brands of corojo tobacco and they were fine. But... lesson learned. Never buy a cigar from the Pro shop at the golf course.Excellent update, Diogenes! Thank you! The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid Anyone have others to include? This was the last day of organized shooting at the Tug Bar until winter. For 1/2 of a beef, so it fits both the gun thread and the food thread, I suppose. Summer shooting would be silly since the traffic at the bar just about quadruples in the summer and there are kids all over the place as well. DH has yet to partake of shooting there, but we've watched a fair bit of it and those folks have an awful lot of fun.

We were at an event Friday evening, and as we were enjoying catered Mission BBQ and an open bar, sra blaster looks at the line and says "isn't that that YouTube guy?"
I looked - and yes, it was that YouTube guy. Brandon Herrera. (He has painfully good hair by the way.) At first I went up and told him I am going to totally fanboy and can I get a selfie and he obliged. Later I saw he and Eli (also of the Unsubscribe podcast) were hanging out and he was not mobbed with fans. So sra blaster and I talked to him for a good while. Watched our Friend the Starter Motor. I have nits to pick. One, the magnetic pole of a current-carrying loop are not in the plane of the loop, but perpendicular to it. Two, they should have used a 2-pole starter for their demonstration. Four poles just complicates things, and might lead viewers to believe that starters need to have four poles. Most don't.

So...shooty stuff.
I went to the range on Monday to zero a new scope on the Winchester. I got there and realized I had forgotten my rear bag. No bueno. Older guy on the range who had a lovely Sharps rifle, offered to let me borrow one of his. Shortly after that, he realized that he had forgotten...his ammo. So I returned the bag and proceeded to zero. Was my shit wobbly? Yes...yes, it was. Did I feel bad about that in comparison? No...no, I didn't. Some sad news. Mike Beliveau who does the Duelist1954 channel on YT had a post. He had fluid in his lungs and blood clots. That's being treated but he may also have cancer of the liver. The cancer is still not sure. He'll probably have to step away from the channel for a while.
I've followed his videos for years. He deals mostly with black powder stuff, which is what caught my attention originally. He also does excellent episodes about the history and development of iconic guns like the Garand, '03 Springfield and Colt and S and W revolvers. If any of you follow Mike's channel, a few prayers would be appreciated. He is a genuinely good guy. Posted by: lin-duh is offended at April 26, 2026 07:50 PM (VCgbV) I recommend getting one with dual recoil springs (like Colt's M45A1) or retrofit one with the same. This does reduce felt recoil at the cost of requiring more grip strength to manipulate the slide. A full length guide rod is supposed to improve accuracy, but it makes the pistol significantly more difficult to reassemble after field stripping for cleaning. I don't think it's worth the additional hassle. Posted by: Ed L at April 26, 2026 07:57 PM (BCwQW) 73

Hey Diogenes that's a useful cigar round-up. I've not yet tried the R y J 1875 Reserve - have tried the 1875 Nicaragua (reviewed here, very nice) and the 1875 Connecticut (also nice, want to try again before writing it up).
The San Cristobal Elegancia I tried once, bought and smoked at my local store. My notes show it was a bit of a fizzle for me, but I needed to try again. This is something I've noticed more and more with new-to-me sticks. Need to give them 2-3 tries, because individual cigars sometimes aren't a good representative of their type. Have yet to try any Cohiba, but Rubicon is on the list. As I've told Weasel, lately I've been on a long string of "meh" new-to-mes, and these are mostly very high-reputation My Fathers and EP Carrillos (now Casa Carrillo). However I've hit paydirt with the last two, with reviews sitting in Weasel's inbox. Posted by: rhomboid at April 26, 2026 07:58 PM (U/Byj) 75
Lin-duh - 1911 in 45 or 2011 in 9mm?
Posted by: blaster - Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat at April 26, 2026 07:59 PM (NlEaG) 76
Thanks for that video about ammo storage. I thought the comment about keeping primers dry and at stable temperatures was the most important tip for reloaders. That's why I keep primers in the house instead of in the garage. Given the cost of ammo these days as well as components, a bit of effort to keep them dry and stable is worth it.
I have ammo cans, metal and plastic, picked up on sale or used. Even Tupperware or plastic sealer bags will work, especially with desiccant packs. I am careful to make sure the containers are labeled, especially for reloads: date, caliber, powder used, powder charge, and bullet weight. If the load was designed for a specific gun, I include that as well. Posted by: JTB at April 26, 2026 08:00 PM (yTvNw) 77

Posted by: The Grateful - Acta Non Verba at April 26, 2026 07:10 PM (IQ6Gq) Kid's gainin'. We take him one weekend a month these days, so he gets a nice peaceful few days in the country. Sleeps like.... a baby. And I get to show him off to the ladies at church, so there's that. The boy lost his job, but has a new one, supposedly. We get behavior complaints from the HOA at his condo, which of course, we own. At some point, it will probably cost us money. He sometimes pays a little rent, sometimes not. But, at least he isn't in jail. No idea why the mom wants to farm the kid out so much. Neither does she lift a finger to clean the condo. I guess grandbaby spends days and nights at her dad and step-mom's place, too. Step-mom is a manipulative bitch who thinks my son is the entire problem. Had to remind her that it takes two to tango. But grandboy is wonderfully easy to care for, and I think he likes the peace and quiet out here, rather than the constant zoo of that condo. He totally digs sleeping on DH's arm. It is his happy place. Posted by: tcn in AK at April 26, 2026 08:00 PM (DwqWV) 78

Then try it with a new-to-me (but very conventional) load of 230g plated bullets. Switching from 200g lead SWCs (my standard load for a decade) cuz 1) had some weird jams with the 1911 last few times I used it 2) I found plated 230s for the same price as my Missouri Bullet standard SWCs.
Haven't worked up a new load in a while, but this will be easy. I typically use a charge that's just enough to reliably cycle whichever semi-auto pistol I'm loading for, with a small margin of extra. Posted by: rhomboid at April 26, 2026 08:04 PM (U/Byj) 84

One of the great advantages of low humidity (almost always here) is ease of storage. I do use those re-chargeable dessicant things just for overkill. Also put one in each firearm storage container.
I did leave one of my die sets on the press 2 years ago and got some unpleasant light corrosion on parts of them (we had a humid week or so, very late summer, happens once in a while). Plan to brush and tumble to make 'em purty again. I try to wipe down and put NuFinish wax on my dies every once in a while (use the wax in my tumbling media too). Or you can go w/ Tisas or another retro import if budget is a factor. Colt's primary advantage is still its future resale value. The prancing pony still goes for a premium for that reason. Posted by: Schnorflepuppy (OT but harmless) at April 26, 2026 08:07 PM (t2oSI) Yikes, maybe you should put son through mechanic training. I have to say that all those things sound like they could have been caught sooner, and done for less money. This is why I like to drive older vehicles that have plentiful parts in the aftermarket. Also, an older vehicle that you paid cash for does require mandatory collision insurance, so a money savings there. And if you need a 4-figure repair on a 4-figure car, you have the option of saying, "fuck it, I'm done with this one", and sell it or donate to charity (for a tax writeoff, even), and buy another 4-figure car. IMO: For straight 1911's the Kimber Custom Shop guns are very nice and are midway on the cost scale. spawn shot sra blasters Kimber Raptor II as her first 1911. Shot it well, of course. Its an iron sight gun and it is extremely accurate. Retail is $1400-$1500 (oof just looked it up WAS that price now about $1750).
In the DMV MGC we also have a couple of Aegis Elite Custom OIs. They come with a Vortex Red Dot on it - 1 in 45 (Hrothgar) and 1 in 9mm (swa). Those things are like laser guns. swa's 9mm is like a cheat code for shooting. And btw Bass Pro/Cabela's has them on sale for $1397 right now. Given the difference in price and the fact that the dot is included, one would have to presume the Aegis Elite has a good bit less in the gun - but honestly I have not seen any difference in the firearms. I have been encouraging him to pursue that career path -- even have him job-shadow the senior mechanic at a shop a friend owns. Haven't yet been able to set the hook, though. JTB I also like to do more casual reloading prep (resize/prime) separate from charging/seating for certain calibers. 9mm, 30 carbine, 30-06 all involve lube, so there's a natural progression of separate steps. Pricey, and, options may vary, but good. Retail on a box of Red Dot Robusto, put them at over $25 a stick. They are nice, but there is a much better way to do it, but you have to sift through a TON of e-mails… Sign up with the major retailers. JR, Cogars Intl, and Thompsons. They have sampler packs, where you can get these for $5 a stick, along with some other stogies. I love the Red Dot, but their Nicaraguan (gray band) is spectacular. My favorite of all Cohibas. Again, these go on sale in 5-packs. Just saw an ad…Cohiba Spectre 2025. Ridiculously priced at $1,499 for 8 or 10. Can’t remember. But… you absolutely need to check it out. YouTube has a couple vids. A Baer is a Gucci gun for sure. I guess the threshold question is what level of accuracy do you actually need for the intended use? If the answer is "Baer level" then you'll wind up paying Baer level prices. If it's somewhat less, maybe look for a Springfield Range Officer. They're out of production for a few years now but they were pretty decent for the price and had adjustable sights which I would consider non-negotiable for any sort of target work. They shoot center fire that can also hold more than 10 rounds but the rules state you can only load 10 rounds max regardless of how many the mag will hold. The shot timer will detect if you shoot more than 10 in a string and that is grounds for disqualification. Posted by: lin-duh is offended at April 26, 2026 08:26 PM (VCgbV) 139
Thanks Gunslinger. I am not usually in the market for a stick above $20 (or, usually, close to that). But for "special occasion" cigars, it can happen.
The samplers or "smash packs" (usually 5 each of two somewhat similar cigars from different brands) on some sites are tremendous bargains. The sticks will be half price or less, compared to their regular price. I reco CigarPage for this. And Atlantic regularly has 10-packs that are 1/2 or less of the usual price. I sort of feast on those, almost always some cigars from such 10-packs in my tupperdors. Espinosa 601 Blue Maduro, Montecristo White and Espada Oscuro, Oliva Serie G - all quality stuff at a deep discount. Posted by: rhomboid at April 26, 2026 08:28 PM (U/Byj) 140

Diogenes, for golf cigars I used to always have a brick of Quorums. They're actually pretty decent cigars, but bundle pricing makes them perfect for the course. Have not been on the links for a while (expect that to change in the future), but now I'd use either those (they now come in 3 wrappers, vs. back when I bought them regularly for golf).
See my review here a few weeks back on bundle options. When they have them, Atlantic's Artisan Tabak barber poles are great for this. Using sales and deals, lately I've been getting non-bundle stuff at bundle prices, so my definition of "bundle" cigars has become a little more fluid. 9 Thanks Gunslinger. I am not usually in the market for a stick above $20 (or, usually, close to that). But for "special occasion" cigars, it can happen.
Yeah, I never pay over 6 or 7 bucks a stick, no matter what. But the 5 packs for excellent cigars are a total steal, if you can tolerate the volume of e-mails. I’m a 2 buck-a-cigar guy. I smoke a lot of them! Have found some great ones, and have experienced some complete dog turds. But failure brings knowledge, right? Posted by: Gunslinger at April 26, 2026 08:34 PM (HZfH/) 152

Actually, there's a really nice 9mm Range Officer on gunbroker right now for $860 (plus cc fee and shipping). Not a steal but not bad.
If you need an FFL in Austin to receive a gun for you, I recommend Central Texas Gun Works down on Ben White. The owner is Michael Cargill of the SCOTUS case Garland v Cargill and deserves support. Lin-duh - Tisas Nightstalker.
Here is what the google ai overview says: The Tisas 1911 Night Stalker SF is a feature-rich, budget-friendly 1911-style pistol ($599-$899), featuring a forged steel frame/slide with a distinctive Platinum Grey Cerakote finish. Available in 9mm, 10mm, or .45 ACP, it includes a 5-inch threaded barrel, optic-ready slide, integrated Picatinny rail, and tritium front night sights There are 2 - one has a compensator and one without. I have a friend with one and it is a very good shooter. I would say about 90%+ the gun the Kimbers are at half the price. Lin-duh, don't forget magazines. My two cents: Wilson Combat or Chip McCormick. These magazines are more expensive than the competition. But they do a much better job of tolerating the abuse that comes with competition work (dropping on the ground, etc.). There's a reason why the USMC specified Wilson Combat magazines for the final 1911 accepted for military service, the M45A1.

I didn't get to the range this week. I did last week. I've got some muscle and tendon damage in my left shoulder and some nerve thing going on in my neck, and I've been concerned that it's going to mess up my fundamentals. However, I overcame my resistance last week and headed for the Texas Gun Club to do 100 rounds or so.

Was considering replacing the springs on the Wilson mags as part of my NASA-like investigation of the 1911 mega-jams. When I talk to people interested in learning to reload ammo I always stress single stage processing both to keep things simple and, above all, for safety reasons. The other advice is to get manuals for the process and the specific loads. The ABCs of Reloading and Richard Lee's Modern Reloading are a good start. The various powder and bullet manufacturers all have their manuals for each caliber. The one I use the most is the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook.

But as for .45....for 1911's....I gotta suggest sticking with 230 gr ball for max reliability. Maybe grind down the tip to make it flat, but that's it. So many 1911 have feeding problems with JHP.
If you have a pistol that has a good, throated chamber, then JHP rounds are even better. I go back and forth between the 200 and 185 JHP rounds. Not sure which is better. The data is a bit friendly to the 185...but at that point...why are you carrying a .45? Might as well go 10mm and increase capacity. I use a turret press (Lee 4-hole), which of course becomes single-stage by removing the little bar. I use in turret mode for everything except 30-06, though I do break up the process with 9mm and 30 carbine due to lube use during resizing (I tumble post-resizing to remove lube). I typically will prime/charge/seat with every caliber except 30-06, which is strictly batch, with about 3 visual inspections of each round (after cleaning, after resizing, after loading).
