The Morning Rant: NATO...An Idea Whose Time Is Past

punk-monkey.jpg

The population of the countries comprising NATO is about 980 million people. If one subtracts the population of the United States, it is about 635 million people, or 1.8X the population of the United States. Yet the NATO countries spend far less per capita on their militaries (≈$975) than does the USA (≈$2,800), and far less in absolute terms; the USA spends about 1.6X what the rest of NATO spends. And it is actually worse, because a portion of America's defense budget is spent in Europe, maintaining our bases and paying our personnel, whereas Europe's infrastructure and personnel expenditure is primarily domestic.

Of course they use the money we spend and they don't on a cradle-to-grave welfare state that has crippled most of Europe and turned a once great region into a post-modern mess of accommodation, hatred of nationalism and patriotism, massive guilt for their previous success, and worst of all, a simmering hatred of all things American ... including our military!

In addition to the ridiculous imbalance in defense spending, not all of the member states of NATO are comfortable with its mutual defense requirements. In fact, Spain is unabashedly anti-American, and refused use of its American bases for the effort against the mad Mullahs of Iran. Turkey's loyalties are suspect because of its close relationships with countries and movements that are explicitly anti-American, anti-West, and support Islamic expansionism. Italy has also refused the use of Sigonella Air Base in Sicily, and France has restricted flights over its territory.

The reality is that NATO and Europe are happy to benefit from our underwriting of their defense, but are unwilling to perform the basic functions of allies, including even pro forma participation in an effort to destroy the nuclear aspirations of a country that is an avowed enemy of the West and has stated explicitly for the last 47 years that its goal is the destruction of the West and the ushering in of an Islamic state. And let us not forget its less lofty goals of supporting Islamic terrorism across the world that has killed thousands, including in Europe!

The benefit of NATO for America has clearly faded, and the costs are simply too much to bear. The original function has been subsumed in a mass of bureaucratic waste, competing national priorities, and most of all the shrinking of the world-wide Soviet threat into a regional player that can't project its military might more than 100 miles into its neighbor.

Should we leave NATO? Yes. Is it politically possible? Probably not, but the administration, through the Department of War can reorient our NATO effort to one more focused on real strategic threats and in countries that are less virulently and reflexively anti-American. In other words...punish our enemies and reward our friends. And if that means moving our bases from Spain and the UK and Italy to Israel and Poland, then so be it.

It is no longer the responsibility of the American taxpayer to buttress European defense. Their economies are successful enough to fund it without our assistance, although they are welcome to purchase our military technology if they are capable of keeping it out of the hands of the Chinese and the Russians.

Perhaps we can sell them our bases!

The Royal Navy is ceding some of its build slots for Type 26 frigates to Norway. It is looking like Slot #3 which should have been HMS Belfast will instead go to Norway. The UK and its Royal Navy is no longer a serious military force.

Canada has ordered 15 Type 26s as the River class destroyer. Australia is also buying the Type 26.

19 I'm sure everyone here is in favor of scaling back or eliminating the military assistance we give to NATO, at least in Old Europe. Another question is the extent to which a surprise mass attack is even possible any more.

It was clear that Russian intended to attack Ukraine long before it happened. There simply wasn't the political will to do anything about it. Likewise, if China went after Taiwan, we'd know about it long in advance - long enough to move assets to counter it.

In the age of satellites, drones, and loyal wingmen, political will is a lot more important than assets on the ground.

Nonetheless, I'd like to move our current NATO assets to the front line states - they at least are taking the Russian threat seriously.

The timing here could be interesting. 37 NATO was formed in '49, a year after 1948's Marshall Plan.

Since the Trump administration essentially (finally, in most ways) ended the latter last year -- dismantling foreign aid programs, incorporating USAID into the State Department (and eventually killing it), opposing international development goals, emphasizing bilateral reciprocity over multilateral cooperation, considering withdrawing from global institutions like the World Bank & IMF, et. al. -- it follows that we should essentially end the former this year.

Norway sued NHI over the high operating costs and lack of capability stemming from the purchase with support contract of 14 NH90 helicopters. NHI has taken back the thirteen that were delivered and repaying some of the money. Norway has ordered Blackhawk variant to replace the NH90.

Belgium has retired four of its eight NH90s. After two crashes, one fatal, and other issues; Australia has retired and scrapped its entire NH90 fleet. Australia's MoD said they tried to sell them but no one wanted to buy them.

Germany has found the loading ramp of the NH90 to be weak and the floor in the troop compartment can be damaged by combat boots.

44 "No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth!"

-Ronald Reagan

That last glib comment is funny, but bureaucracies actually aren't immortal, because of that first statement of "voluntarily reduc(ing) itself".

As parasites, bureaucracies always weaken their host until the host is defeated by outside forces. It's why economists found that defeated countries (in this case, Germany and Japan) grow at ASTOUNDING rates, because the vested interest groups and entrenched bureaucracies had been ground into dust.

I'm not saying losing a war is good for a country, because there has never been a victor as magnanimous as the US, but destroying bureaucracies ought to be the aim of every patriot.

As bad as the Western Eurotrash cockfags are, the worst of them is the Frogs. DeGaulle took one look at a map and realized that Frogpatch didn't need to join the military branch of NATO to enjoy the defense advantages. But since NATO was stupid enough to form the political branch in such a way that a nation could join that part of the organization separately, the Frogs took advantage of it. So they got to have a rather substantial role in setting the direction of NATO policy, without having to commit their military to NATO command.

Left them the resources to attempt a post-war reconstruction of the French colonial empire. But, being Frogs, they fucked it up and lost the two big jewels in the empire within 15 years: Indochina and Algeria. Not that either place is much of a jewel.

Every city councilman, school board member, the police chief, the mayor....All muslham men. The city documents are in arabic, ads are run in arabic and stores area all catering to the muslhams. Police recruiting posters are in arabic and the female officers wear the hijab.

82 Kind of reminds me of the discussion we had last night at my sewing/knitting circle. We all go to one of two churches in the same denomination, but we found out that the nitty-gritty of church committees is very different between the two churches. Our church has a one-time new membership "class" (a Sunday lunch at the pastor's house with a meeting including him and two council members beforehand), and the other church doesn't. Our "class" lays out the church's stance on certain issues, but more pertinent to our discussion, the expectations of new members. New members are given a grace period of about a year, and then the council will include them in the phone calls in June to ask people to be on committees. The elder at our meeting warned us that if we don't say "no" to the phone call or text, that is an automatic "yes." We were asked what our strengths and weaknesses were so they could figure out where to put us.

All this is to say that our church has stated very clearly that as long as you are able, we *will* be using your talents. Maybe NATO should consider that concept.

99 None of the rest of NATO have enough transport planes.
They have to catch rides on American C-17s & C-130s.
They have no logistics beyond their own borders.

Any NATO armed forces outside of the U.S., are only good for local operations without our planes moving troops & materiel around.

So Europe is only good to defend Europe, and Canada is only good to defend Canada. And they can't even effectively do that right now outside of possibly France and Poland.

I don't see then gaining the will to improve that situation in the near future, either, due to so many of these nations deliberately gimping their own armed forces and their own industrial and energy sectors.

That isn't even mentioning the Great Barbarian Invasion western Europe has facilitated against itself.

As we've seen that would basically be money pissed away. But that's better then what Europe and especially Germany spent their time doing in our actual history since WWI.

One could imagine then that the world ends up not with a competition between freedom and communism, but freedom and old style European aristocracy which I think is a better and clearer debate to have.

Russia Could Attack a NATO Country Within Months, Polish Prime Minister Warns. “This is something really serious. I’m talking about short-term perspectives, rather months than years,” he said.

apparently the follwing has to be repeated over and over again: The west is not afraid of Russia winning a war against us. We are afraid of them *trying*!

This is like "IRAN IS ABOUT TO MAKE A NUCLEAR WEAPON" threat that Nethanyahu's been saying for the last 20 years at least once every 6 months

Ukraine been dominating them for weeks and just got huge money boost. Second: the russian army been in worse condition week by week recently, so wtf could they even do?

Randomly invite whole NATO into war to totally get anhiliated?

This means eu and nato can justify new laws and regulations. Did muricans visited Polska lately or something? Sounds like there's a massive spending waiting. So just in case if peeps ain't happy with how prices are going up and up and probably will get way worse soon - be afraid! ruzkis could come!

Lol, just ordered a box of Skilcraft Liquid Impressions Ultra Fine Point pens. Could be the best writing pens I've used in a while.

In the government building where I worked, we had paper towel dispensers in the bathrooms. They were made by the blind. It was physically impossible to extract a towel intact. It was at that point that I began to suspect the government of incompetence.

183 apparently the follwing has to be repeated over and over again: The west is not afraid of Russia winning a war against us. We are afraid of them *trying*!

One of Reagan's arguments was that we were more likely to have peace if we had a strong enough military to make the Soviets fear the outcome of any military conflict.

The left at the time called him a warmonger and argued that if you pay for a military you will end up using it.

Glad to see they are 100% reversed here though I still don't get the argument. The US military is sufficient to defeat Russia in an invasion into NATO even without the rest of NATO. Add in Poland and whatever scraps the rest of Europe puts together and the picture is even better.

But...then the logical answer would be Europe should dramatically increase defense spending, *beyond* American levels, AND agree to the reasonable terms Trump has been asking for to keep the US in the alliance and committed to it - not just spending more but sending ships to the Gulf and so on.

In the Navy, it was "a good sailor always has a pen on him."

223 If he did shoot him, he's betting his career and his freedom that the person he's shooting is armed and intending to kill the President, not a parent chasing a kid, not a speaker about to be late, not any of a dozen innocent but 'looks really bad in the moment' reasons.

The idea that agents can just shoot people for running is not correct.

Dude was running with a shotgun in his hand. lol

No SS agent would be disciplined for shooting him dead. Probably get an award and nice letter from Sean Curran in his service jacket.

He would have to be impeached, and neither side in Congress loves him much.
I would suspect there would be regular calls for recusal from the parties in front of the bench, however.

I don't think that administrative law judges need a law degree.

229 I get it. The WWII vets who served in the Pacific couldn't abide anything Japanese for the rest of their lives.
Slowly but surely Nikon, Sony, Toshiba, Toyota, Honda made it impossible to avoid them.
So they died.

Japan is a very different country today, and I don't believe in blood guilt.

238 SPLC says their "informant" program was not kept secret from law enforcement.

This is called "lying by extraneous inclusion"

1) that's not the crime you're accused of committing. You're accused of fraudulently concealing that you were funding racists and fomenting racists posting and events
2) it's already established you worked with the FBI. But you said "the DOJ" (in your filing) not "the FBI." And, no matter, that doesn't elevate you to a full law enforcement entity.
3) and how much did you disclose to the DOJ? Your filing only say that you let the DOJ know you used confidential informants.
Again, that's not what you are accused of doing.

If that's their best defense, they know they are F'ed.

The Supreme Court, because the qualifications for membership is spelled out quite specifically in the Constitution, is the only court in the US where bar membership is not required.
