The New York Times' attempt to wring sympathy out of us for people who should have had these fake "jobs" in the first place, and are now actually forced to work for a living instead of just relying on their Democrat contacts to give them well-paid, no-work political sinecures, is absurd.

People have plowed through savings, cashed out retirement funds and moved in with relatives. Former U.S.A.I.D. workers estimate that less than half have found full-time work. She was fired by email while on maternity leave, given 24 hours to clear out her desk and left with three days of health insurance and no severance pay. She had worked for the U.S. Agency for International Development or related groups for more than two decades. She made $175,000 a year. That was Jan. 28, 2025. Today Amy Uccello and her husband, who also lost his job when U.S.A.I.D. funding for his nonprofit dried up, rely on food stamps, Medicaid and a supplemental nutrition program for women and children that helps with their now 19-month-old daughter. The mortgage on their home in Washington was until recently in forbearance, meaning they negotiated to pay less than they owed each month. But the bank has now cut them off and suggested they apply for a low-income mortgage program. "We don't know if we'll qualify," Ms. Uccello said. She and her husband have applied for more than 100 jobs with no luck. Most of their friends don't have jobs either.

That's way more than than wife and I made combined in any given year but we managed to pay off our 30 year mortgage 19 years early and put a huge chunk of $$$$ into our savings account, enough that we could survive for 6-8 months if all of our money was cut off.

I read awhile ago that it was just Too Difficult for CIA people to actually live in the countries that they are supposed to be covering, so what they increasingly do is live in Northern Virginia, and spend a month or so a year in Ghana or whatever place they are responsible for.

Basically, the entire DC and NoVa and Montgomery County MD economies depend on fake spending - well the spending is real but the purpose of the dollars is hugely fake.
If there were a real audit - the entire ecosystem would collapse. And it would go back to some shacks around a swamp.

No, not really. At first, prices levelled off instead of continuing to rise as they had done, and then they even fell some, although not uniformly. It took quite a number of years for the houses in my neighborhood to regain their 2008 level.

My guess is at easily about 500-1 trillion per year since 2009 deficit is from fraud. With interest, probably about half the current debt came from fraud, waste, and abuse with the additional interest to service that debt.
