Random music trivia: Rick James only won one Grammy - and it was for songwriting credit on MC Hammer's "U Can't Touch This."

The irony is that songwriting credit did not come without a fight. The song samples the opening riff of "Super Freak."

What about Lebanons? Depends how you count. Fadi BouKaram is a Lebanese photographer who took a five-month road trip across the U.S. to find them all. The Brennan Monorail - I will admit that I thought this was a fake when I first saw it. Never heard of it before and the video is clearly a product of AI.

Brennan's Gyro Monorail

The first gyro monorail patent was filed by Irish-Australian engineer Louis Philip Brennan in 1903. He first demonstrated a small working model of his invention to the Army and impressed them so much that the Army Council recommended £10,000 for the development of a full-size vehicle. However, the Financial Department vetoed the idea, but Brennan, with the help of the Army, managed to raise £2,000 from various sources.

Brennan demonstrated the monorail again at the Japan-British Exhibition at the White City, London in 1910. This time the monorail car carried 50 passengers around a circular track at 20 miles per hour. Among the passengers was Winston Churchill, whose presence helped Brennan garner great support for his monorail project. Despite the initial enthusiasm, the monorail failed to attract investors, and Brennan was forced to abandon his dream.

29 Grandfather's old Allis conked out decades ago. The tractor we've used for years actually belongs to the cowboys, and we can't just depend on them. Pro'ly gonna need to get a new one to handle the place. Pro'ly won't be a Deere.🤠

Hear me out on this: if you had, say, a dino replica of a decent size in your yard, you could be endlessly amused by dressing said dino in holiday and seasonal wear. For example, a serape and straw hat for Cinco de Mayo. My brother was "gifted" with two plastic pink flamingos that took up residence in his front yard. Someone dressed the birds for various holidays but brother had no idea who was responsible because the costume changes occurred while he was at work.

Thanks for the scanner! It's an endless source of amusement and bewilderment. But probably not for those who have to deal with the callers.

I did not know that. I saw Dave Mason when he was in Fleetwood Mac in the mid 90s. Saw them in some outdoor club in St Petersburg, FL. They sounded great. Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham were not in this particular iteration of FM, but they still sounded great. Dave Mason and Bekka Bramlett (who is fantastic!) filled in. It was a great show.

I hadn't known the roster was ever anyone but Larry, Moe, and Curly. It was a shock. Sent you an email, OE. Nothing much happened today to report, really, except that I spent money on my headlight and hit up Walmart again for some chow supplies. Oh, and I went out to a AA meeting this evening and met someone from Lousy-ana! Happens almost any time I travel, it seems. Anyway, his brother-in-law is planning to sell his modest home and it might be right for me. He'll give me a call tomorrow.

My realtor and lender are no longer happy with me because I'm questioning the high property tax and insurance rates here. Their emails have gone from encouraging and "We'd be glad to find you something you love!" to rather cool, I think.

Soooo... in the late 80's I was working for Commander Submarine Pacific, in his basement, taking care of all his electronics.

Early one Sunday, I got called in for a weird outage on one of our Satellite Com system... had to call in my other really good tech, and we ended up working all night...

So... we finally resolve the problem about 9:00 AM MONDAY morning, after working close to 24 hours straight.... and as we are kinda celebrating figuring it out, the Song the Curly Shuffle plays on the radio...

So... of course... we start acting like Stooges...

Well.... turns out the Admiral was coming to congratulate us for figuring out the fix... and had hit the top of the Stairs... mid.... Curly Shuffle.... Nyuk nyuk nyuk.

According to his Aide, he stopped at the top of the stairs.... looked at us... shook his head... smiled.. and went back upstairs. He never mentioned it at all... but...

Well, if you are planning a move to escape Da Swamp, would it not be prudent to maybe construct a spreadsheet, with factors like climate, home prices, property tax, income tax, vehicle taxes, and sales taxes included? If your retirement income will be very modest, then marginal income tax rate might not be a deal breaker, but high sales tax and property taxes sure would be. What about some town on the redneck Riviera, say in Alabama or the Florida panhandle? Right on the coast might not be as humid as Nawlins.

Dear God no, AOP. Those are hurricane target areas and are close to water. I really want to get to drier conditions, except for snow, and I want to see some snow every year. Northern AL, well, maybe, but I wouldn't get the snow often.

I have a set of rules about how much I can afford to pay for my housing, i.e., 25% of my monthly net (not gross) income. Everybody is trying to convince me to go to 30-33%. NOOO. The 25% is doable, I think, with the right price, the right (i.e., big) down payment, and the right tax and insurance.

So, the local DA has issued a second degree. murder warrant on the neighbor that we think killed my F-I-L, even without a body. . That bit of news is tempered by credible testimony that the suspect did not go to Texas to be near his mother, but instead actually threatened to kill her if she ratted him out to the cops, way back in 2012 or so. So instead o supporting him she has been hiding from him. There is reason to believe that he stayed in cO, possibly as far back as 2012, after living rough since my F-I-L disappeared in 2008. So we may have been chasing a ghost. Yet to be confirmed. His sister and her husband basically threw him under the bus as "bat shit crazy".

I have a set of rules about how much I can afford to pay for my housing, i.e., 25% of my monthly net (not gross) income. Everybody is trying to convince me to go to 30-33%. NOOO. The 25% is doable, I think, with the right price, the right (i.e., big) down payment, and the right tax and insurance.

My son went to UNC in Chapel Hill. I really liked the triangle-area of NC (Raleigh-Durham-etc). It's got some elevation so not as bad humility wise, far enough north so you get a little snow, but mild winters, far enuf inland that hurricanes aren't a problem - maybe check out higher elevations in Tenn/NC?

A few weeks back we had a terrible wind storm in Cheyenne. I got a picture from inside my fence of 4x4's he had put up to keep it up. His text said he didn't have any long nails to keep them in place. 20 minutes later I got a picture of the 4x4's nailed into place... he'd gone and bought nails.

I get the feeling he used to be a one percenter, but he's the spitting image of Walter White. He's almost 60, all cleaned up, and a great guy. I keep trying to get him to check out this site. He'd lime it

It sparked a life-long tradition of watching '50's B & W 'sci-fi' "horror" movies on Saturday night, much to Mrs ARiK's consternation.

In Austin, Houston and Dallas, they have toll roads. They are easy to avoid. Spare me this “TX has a lot of toll roads”.

By the way, TX has no state income taxes but somehow has the best roads of any state in the union. I remember being 11 years old and my father telling me that in all his travels only two places had good roads - Germany and TX. After my own travels across the state and around the world…I conclude he is right.

Think roll-up doors. You've seen them in all the old tv shows about big cities, I'm sure. They basically shutter the front of the store. NYC evidently wants robbers to be able to window shop after closing hours.

265 My favorite late night show was “Night Flight” in the 80’s, I think it was in the USA network. It would have all kinds of freaky/cool stuff, and sometimes I’d start watching at 11 , just meaning o watch for a few minutes and before I know it’s 4 am and I’m still there.

Except that the State of TX gets exactly zero dollars from property taxes. It merely writes the rules for the property tax system. And localities get a ton of money from local sales taxes that they can use to offset keeping property taxes low - but they don’t, and continually jack up property taxes for local fiefdoms.

268 Possibly unpopular opinion: I like Houston's toll roads (Hardy in particular). I'm essentially paying a premium not to be around uninsured illegals, and the constables are fine with 80 MPH (which is 15 over the limit).

Same here. We got our first color TV in ~1972 or so. I was in 8th or 9th grade.

We never had cable. We had 6 TV stations, One PBS, one CBS, and two each ABC and NBC which showed mostly the same things. I never saw shows from the '50's like Leave it to Beaver or Hazel because the one independent station that showed those old reruns was based in Miami 60 miles south and didn't reach our area.

No UHF channels either until much later.

Head north of Lebanon, KS about one mile or so, then turn west on SH 191 for one mile - you’ll see the monument.
