Assertion: While more died in WWII, the carnage in WWI was much more concentrated (with some exceptions, e.g. Stalingrad). Thus, paintings of the latter are grimmer than those of the former. Posted by: Archimedes at April 23, 2026 09:35 AM (Riz8t) 27

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. Im always ill-timed for the book thread. But I just read a very interesting book, Crosses in the Wind, about the Grave Registration Services in World War II, especially at Margraten. The author is very clearly not a professional writer and did not have a ghost writer (I hope), but thats not always a bad thing (although he really did need a copyeditor). It means that this is a very different view of how the cemeteries were created and how the dead were handled while the war was going on than what you might get from a professional. This kind of scene, that Tolkien lived through, must have served as the basis for the Dead Marshes and Mordor in LOTR.
If the artist intended to create a sense of horror and despair in the viewer, he succeeded. A soldier, dead and alone, is sinking into the mud and lifeless landscape. Even the earth has been upheaved with the explosive force of war and death. The final touch is the hint of pain and a scream in the jagged tree stump. It is horrifically effective. There was a very good documentary a couple decades ago (before the BBC went woke) on Edward the VII (Formerly Prince Albert) He was King from 1901 to 1910, and it showed how he used that part of his life tirelessly visiting European Capitols and using his personal influence and diplomatic skills (which were first rate) to negotiate between the European powers and stave off any violent conflict. He was according to all accounts, a master at it. He was on a first name basis with Bismark and all the French leaders; Wilhelm and Nicholas of Russia were his nephews.
When he died, his son George V took over, but he had none of the skills or international respect that his father had, and Europe began a descent into the inevitable war that had been looming for a decade. Posted by: Tom Servo at April 23, 2026 10:10 AM (rGqqI) 177

definitely true but it was just as bad when I lived in town the only area that's a tad worse is the Parkway and that's because they built on the areas the hobos used to live in. so in a way it's actually much better. glad you enjoyed Laser Wolf! any other plans? going up to Fishtown? that's quite a transformation up there tbh it used to be the nabes were bad but CC was good (but not as good as CC is now). now we have these amazing upgraded neigborhoods like Fishtown and Brewerytown and Fairmount! so overall there's no question things are better. the dumb vehicular takeover thing needs to stop tho. that is terrible (mostly for people who live in CC) Posted by: BlackOrchid (j+aD2) at April 23, 2026 10:10 AM (j+aD2) 178

no no I agree the homeless thing .. it's bad the city has problems no doubt we shouldn't shy from talking about them and fixing them! Philly is a very ... conservative city in a way. it resists change. which is in fact what I love about it. if your hotel is on the Parkway, you are close to Ranstead Room. so after dinner as the driver to take you to 20th and Ranstead. it's a bit hidden but it's on Ranstead (a small street) there. Newsroom (another speakeasy) is also not far from you at all - still, take a cab to that one maybe - but usually requires reservations. that one is a bit more "instagram-cool" so will be more crowded than Ranstead. but it's really nice. Sir William Orpen Wikipedia, in part - is an oil-on-canvas painting created in 1918 by the Irish artist William Orpen. It was one of the series of paintings that he made when he was British official war artist in World War I. It belongs to the collection of the Tate, in London.[1] This painting takes his name from the municipality of Zonnebeke, in Flanders, Belgium, which had been completely destroyed as part of the Passchendaele campaign, from June to November 1917. The offensive took a massive toil of British and German lives, while the Allies had just advanced five miles at the end of the campaign. The painting depicts the desolate landscape of a battlefield, with grey skies, the remains of the trenches filled with water, and a corpse lying at the right, while a heavily damaged tree is at the left.[1][2] ..... "‘ "‘I remember an officer saying to me, Paint the Somme? I could do it from memory – just a flat horizon line and mud-holes and water, and the stumps of a few battered trees.’ but one could not paint the smell.".[3] (More) Interesting painting but I'd be ambivalent about hanging it. Thanks. Posted by: L - No nic, another fine day at April 23, 2026 10:55 AM (NFX2v) 300

__________ Mostly for the allies. The Germans took the high ground where they could after the Somme retreat. In some areas, the Brits had to build up their trenches with sandbags and whatnot above ground because of the water table. Posted by: Biff Pocoroba at April 23, 2026 10:56 AM (XvL8K) 301
