Every GOP hold in a special election that's an underperformance is evidence of the GOP not turning out in anything but with Trump on the ballot.

This election (which might be the most prominent special election of the 2025-26 cycle) where the GOP overperformed 2024 by 3 points is not evidence of anything except that the GOP loses everything no matter what, and we should all just blackpill.

It begins,
Albert Houthuesen artist
Albert Houthuesen was born in 1903 in Amsterdam, moving to London with his mother and siblings in 1912, following the sudden death of his artist father. Houthuesen studied at St Martin's School of Art and the Royal College of Art, afterwards earning a living through part-time teaching at the Working Men's College. Despite creating art throughout the 1930s–50s, and the Tate Gallery acquiring a number of his paintings in the late 1930s, Houthuesen became recognised only later in his life, following a solo exhibition at Reid Gallery in London in 1961.

Albert Houthuesen's biography follows, and is worth reading imho.

Likely wouldn't hang today's art selection, but I wasn't familiar with this artist and his story is quite interesting.

You are correct about special elections and to some extent off year elections. Comes from misapplication of by-elections from parliamentary systems to the US.

By-elections and aggregated local council elections in the UK do have some predictive value aka swing because of a unified central government and relatively high turnout.

In the US, not so much. Part of it is election fatigue, we have more elections for different levels of government that parliamentary systems. All sorts of referenda, initiatives, special elections, off year municipal elections, school boards, runoff elections, primary elections, and general elections.

So you get voter fatigue in the US and special elections for the US House are often hurry up affairs requiring an existing party and candidate to spin up a campaign on short notice to try to take advantage of an opportunity. Many of which are in noncompetitive seats.

That said if anyone is on a political blog to read all good news and talk about how wonderful the world is, I question their judgment. People are mostly here to bitch and moan because that's what keeps them invested in dopey politics.

Monty, like me, applied standard economics to the problems of government spending but both of us did not perceive how global flows of US dollars from being a reserve currency helped bolster the US from directly feeling the effects of inflation and implicit devaluation of the dollar.

I would have predicted the EU's collapse for similar reasons by now and Japan/China are in the realm of 200-300 debt to GDP level with faster aging populations than the US.

Standard economic theory right now is similar to the standard model in cosmology. Observances we see in the real world do not correspond with how the std. theory predicts them to be.

Doesn't seem that Modern Monetary Theory works either (closest are Biden, Zimbabwe, and now Iran). The piecemeal Friedman idea that money essentially is a product subject to demand and supply works but the Keynesian system that Friedman's observances come from increasingly do not seem relevant to today's global economy.

And the Austrian school would have us dead and buried sometime during the Obama administration by now.

Globalization is probably the reason.

217 And you engage in a cheap rhetorical tactic of your own: ignoring the point and building a strawman.

There are plenty of people who I heartily agree with here who nevertheless look at everything with a sense of glom and doom, why bother, our defeat by (pick opponent) is inevitable, blah blah blah. Whether or not I agree with someone is different from their attitude towards things.

Posted by: Cow Demon at April 22, 2026 10:48 AM (E6xSb)

Fine. I take back that you are referring only to people you disagree with. That was a leap and I will own it and apologize for going there.

That said, there is little to be gained from labeling some phantom set of people here as "defeatist", which is an intentional slur or at least a thoughtless label, other than controlling or otherwise directing the flow of conversation to something more palatable to you. That is not how forums work. Unless you are a moderator.

See how this went? I apologized to you with sincerity, and your response was to take it further and personally attack me.

IOW my apology wasn't good enough. It didn't give you the satisfaction of doing what you were doing. Which is labeling and controlling. You want submission and you are looking I'm the wrong place. Apply to be a moderator, it suits you.
