Never heard of this artist and I am impressed. The realistic detail of the floor, clothing and furniture makes the viewer feel like they are in the scene. Each person's expression and posture is distinct and individual. The muted colors are natural and don't distract from the people who are the real focus of the painting. But there is subtlety as well. The man standing at the far left is glancing up, noticing the woman and her little boy, not involved but aware. This could be a scene from a Dickens novel. The longer I look at the painting, the more I see and, of course, start to imagine a story about the time and place.
Looking at some of her other works, there is a feel of the Pre-Raphaelite style. That's a good thing. Posted by: JTB at April 21, 2026 09:46 AM (yTvNw) 49

From the bowels of the interwebz:
A woman stands in a print-seller’s shop, beside her a boy, her brother, stands carrying a portfolio under his arm. The black dress and hood she wears tell of a recent loss. She is not wearing a mourning ring though, so she and her brother are probably orphans. Behind the counter to the right is the print-seller, a portly gentlemen, inspecting a small painting, a still life perhaps—the genre that, through lack of access to the life model, tended to be favored by women artists. Technically very nice, but not all that interesting to look at. The commentary on it that Google spit out, which is likely polluted by overlaying modern issues on the Victorian era, is that she's a stronk independent painter who don't need no man and the painting shows her struggling to get men to buy her stuff.

But wait. There's more:
The anxious pose of the woman, her downcast eyes, her left shoulder coiled inwards as though guarding herself against the dealer’s critical gaze and the way, too, her hands toy nervously with a length of string, may lead us to assume that the painting is her own work. Her defensiveness is justified. The chair to the right is empty, the dealer having made no attempt at courtesy by offering her a seat. In the doorway another woman and boy make their way out, some rolled up sheets under the arm of the latter, while outside in the rain a woman is just visible walking along the pavement sheltering herself with an umbrella. Nameless and Friendless.
"The rich man's wealth is his strong city, etc." - Proverbs, x, 15 Emily Mary Osborn Excellent story telling in a painting. I like it a great deal & would hang it. This print reproduces a painting (Tate Britain) exhibited by Osborn at the Royal Academy in 1857. When a subsequent owner lent the work to the International Exhibition in 1862, this related wood engraving was published in the "Illustrated London News." It shows a young woman artist, accompanied by a brother, standing nervously in the shop of an art dealer whom she hopes will buy a work—her black dress suggests the recent loss of parents and their support. Osborn added a Biblical quote to her title, "Nameless and Friendless: 'The rich man’s wealth is his strong city, etc.'—Proverbs, x, 15," to emphasize the plight of women artists who lacked financial means and were denied institutional access. The work should be read as a plea for reform rather than an illustration of personal experience, since Osborn's own family funded her training, and she sold paintings to influential clients such as Queen Victoria. From 1857, Osborn was active in feminist causes, ... (more) Posted by: L - No nic, another fine day at April 21, 2026 10:09 AM (NFX2v) 96

Artist has a real skill for chairs, faces, and floor tiles.
But the perspective seems way off. Look at the boy in the back, and he seems taller than than the one in front, but so far away. Judging from the tiles, or the counter, the figures in rear should be smaller. Same with clerk and guy on ladder. just all confusing. I can't tell if this is widow selling stuff to survive, or female painter. I lean toward the latter, but why she also looks to be in mourning. Not sure. And who is the kid? My understanding, for that era, most female painters were wealthy and did not need to sell prints. Yet she looks to be in need. A needy woman would be doing needlework, not painting -- there is no money in painting. Again, confusing.

I think the door is the main problem -- it is too large, and too light. I guess artist did that to show the street, but a large glass door like that, in that era would be unlikely. It would be smaller and have a large wooden frame. To make such a large glass door (it looms over the shop!) it would need to be tempered glass and have a steel frame (any flexing of hinge points would shatter it) so it just doesn't work.It makes the entire perspective fail.
Posted by: bob (moron incognitus) at April 21, 2026 10:24 AM (53GQo) Posted by: L - No nic, another fine day at April 21, 2026 10:27 AM (NFX2v) 135
I found this commentary on the door:
"Like a continuous narrative (where we see more than one moment of time within a single canvas), do these peripheral figures hint at what awaits the woman and her brother, who, failing to sell her work, will soon be back walking the street? The orthogonal lines in the painting would seem to support this view, pointing conspicuously to the door as they do. So too, of course, does the title of the work, Nameless and Friendless, suggesting that without the necessary connections, a woman artist stands little chance of finding professional success." One of Imperial Germany's other great aces, Werner Voss with 48 victories, did die in a dogfight on Sept 23, 1917, where it was eight or more against just him.
Instead of fleeing, Voss chose to not only fight but attack. Before he was finally killed, he had managed to damage several enemy fighters forcing them out of the fight. His Fokker Triplane fatally stuck and Voss probably also, dived straight into the ground. He was honored not only by his fellow German pilots but also by British pilots. -- The actual, intentional Nazi running in Maine has a line that's getting much applause. Some BS how, in the 80's there were less than 100 billionaires in the US and now there's near 1,000. He goes on--because his audience is mathematically and logically mal-literate--to bemoan that "but you're not 10 times richer!" That's why I'm calling it "Billionaires stole my Lambo!" These greedy dullards actually believe that the scrap of paper they spent $200k+ obtaining from the education collectives entitles them to a life of luxury. And the only reason they don't have that is because billionaires stole it from them. They'd rather live in a country of zero billionaires, and peck shit with the chickens, than in a country of 1k, where they can live a life of luxury that kings 200 years ago would envy. Popping in to share how Congressional Hearings are going -
"An ActBlue spokesperson insists that it has "always been forthcoming with Congress." That’s a rather dubious claim, considering the evidence and the fact that the company’s employees invoked the Fifth Amendment 146 times. It’s also important to note that these allegations aren’t just coming from the GOP. As the report notes, “It is not only the Committees that allege this — it is what ActBlue’s own outside lawyers found during a legal review of the platform’s fraud-prevention practices and statements to Congress.” The committees put it bluntly in their report: "The crux of this misconduct is simple: ActBlue appears to have accepted illegal foreign donations en masse and tried to cover it up, lying to and withholding information from Congress in the process." - I wonder what the odds are that ActBlue gets shut down, and that another, identical and illegal system will replace it. There were a lot of Mexicans sick of Tony the L's bullshit by then as well. Less well known than the humiliating San Jacinto armistice (which Tony went backsies on) is that a bunch of other northern provinces revolted on his retreat. Tony had to reconquer Nuevo Leon, half Coahuila, Tamaulipas and the rest.
I say "half Coahuila" because Tony considered Texas the other half. He couldn't do much about it north of Nueces though, especially once Sam Houston (aka Sam the Great) was in charge of defending it. Posted by: gKWVE at April 21, 2026 11:04 AM (gKWVE) 234
