MORNING RANT: The EV De-Transition Accelerates as Volkswagen Permanently Cancels EV Production in the U.S.

It was exactly five years ago this week that I published my first anti-EV piece at the Ace of Spades blog. I mocked Volkswagen for putting out a press release to celebrate its new ID.4 electric vehicle being able to drive from New York to Sacramento in just 18 days. I wrote, “Phileas Fogg of ‘Around The World In 80 Days’ might be impressed. I’m not. This isn’t 1872. Heck, the Pony Express was able to get mail from Missouri to Sacramento in only 10 days. In 1860. On horseback. But Volkswagen is very excited about their electric cars. With 21st Century technology they are able to make what was once a 4-day drive with quick and easily-available refueling, into a multi-week ordeal where you must obsess about fuel availability.”

I’ve followed Volkswagen’s EV debacle from a front-row seat here in Tennessee. VW, along with Ford, took the bait as hard as any legacy auto manufacturer during peak-EV hype. Both announced all-new Tennessee EV plants to much fanfare in the late ‘teens and early ‘20s. Both of them built costly new plants, with much Tennessee taxpayer assistance. And both are now left with big, empty plants that do not produce EVs.

Ford officially killed its flagship EV, the F150 ~~Conflagration~~ Lightning pickup truck, a few months ago. And now, Volkswagen just followed suit, killing off U.S. production of its flagship ID.4. Volkswagen fully expected this to be its new mass-market vehicle in the tradition of the Beetle and the Golf. By the time the ID.4 was killed off, it was the slowest selling car in the United States. ID.4 sales are averaging about 100 units per month right now. VW anticipated initial demand of 7,000 units per month, and only growing from there.

Five years ago, an all-EV future was not even considered a hypothesis by most journalists and politicians (including too many Republicans.) They considered it a fait accompli. Their religious fervor in service to the Church of Climate, along with their zeal to stamp out personal liberty, had many people thinking the only question was the timeline to 100% EVs. But some of us chose to fight back, and conservative media played a huge role. But most importantly, conservative consumers came to understand that not buying an EV was an important political act, no matter how much an EV might be subsidized by tax dollars or discounted by the auto manufacturer.

I’m going to make a quick Civil War analogy to the war we have fought against the “EV transition.” The defunding of EV mandates in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act along with the removal of emissions penalties by Lee Zeldin’s EPA were like Gettysburg and Vicksburg. Momentum was reversed, and the new task for the EV army was defensive - to hold out and hold on until the tide turned again. The tide never turned back. When first Ford threw in the towel on EVs, and then Volkswagen followed, it was like the fall of Atlanta and Richmond. Team EV is in a state of total collapse. Perhaps Rivian’s impending cessation of operations will be Appomattox for electric vehicles.

I often hear it said that legacy auto manufacturers had no choice but to try to go all-EV due to government mandates. That is not true. While Joe Biden and his EPA were certainly trying to use the coercive power of government to steer auto manufacturers in that direction, Ford and VW announced their grand EV strategies well before Biden tried to tighten the screws further on gas vehicles. But several mass-market manufacturers resisted. Honda and Toyota received blistering criticism from the left-wing auto media for going slow with EVs, continuing instead to focus on traditional internal combustion vehicles and gas-hybrids instead. The CEOs of Ford and VW, by contrast, were worshipful disciples of Klaus Schwab. They wanted to lead the EV transition. In 2019, VW’s CEO, Herbert Diess, promised an all-electric future for VW, but having nearly destroyed the company in service to his eco-leftist belief system, he was forced out in 2022. Inexplicably, Ford’s destructor, Jim Farley, is still its CEO.

One way I can tell that the morale of Team EV is in shambles is that my hate mail from EV fanboys has evaporated. I’m starting to miss those diatribes instructing me to “educate yourself” on the superiority of EVs, and advising me that they’ll be laughing when I have no choice but to buy an EV.

Another criticism I often hear is that those of us fighting to defeat the EV transition are going to cost a lot of jobs throughout the “electric vehicle belt” in Tennessee, Georgia, and North Carolina. I don’t care. Those were always make-believe jobs in service to a socialist economic model. It required that money be redistributed from taxpayers to government-favored corporations whose business models rely on government subsidization. In addition, the jobs to be created at new EV plants were to be offset by killing-off jobs at legacy auto manufacturers. It was at best a zero-sum game.

But I’ll go even further and state that if a manufacturer is engaged in an evil enterprise, those jobs should not exist. If Volkswagen announced that it was building a new foundry in my town to produce slave shackles, I would oppose it. Once built, I would advocate for it to fail, even though it might cost some people their jobs. The government-funded EV transition was the flagship project to deny people their basic liberties, including freedom of movement. It was also part of a plan to kill off the jobs and wealth-creation of the petroleum industry. Given a trade-off between a job at a Rivian plant or a job in the oil patch, I’ll side with keeping the roughneck employed.

The failure of Ford’s and Volkswagen’s electric vehicle ventures is something to celebrate. Ideally, they’ll both successfully repurpose their EV factories now to build vehicles that real-world consumers want to buy.

29 I think I mentioned this before, but I was at the NYC Auto Show a few weeks ago. There was an almost complete lack of EV pimping and promotion. Sure, there were EVs there, some as show cars, but you almost had to know they were EV. None of the manufacturers were trumpeting "THIS IS EV!"

This is much different than even a few years ago, when everything there was wall-to-wall EV. Hell, even at last year's exotics display there were a few supercar EVs. This year? A quad-turbo V12 that makes 1,800 hp and costs $4 million.

This is telling. The show reflects what car companies think the public is interested in. The whole thing is a bug marketing exercise, duh. The companies clearly have decided that their customers aren't interested in EVs.

That being said, I took a ride in that Lucid Air and the Gravity. Really nice-looking cars, nice interiors, seemed like a good ride. But they're so plagued with electronic issues that owning one is like kicking yourself in the dick. Repeatedly.

Agreed. Give an EV with 5-10 minute recharge time, 300+ mile range (in winter), and most important, not a runaway fire hazard and I'd be very receptive. Having Teslas FSD self driving tech would be a big bonus.

Anyone who thinks owning an EV makes you less of a man can only comprehend manhood through a performative and delicate lens.

EVs existing means they're being forced on people, lab grown meat existing means it's being forced on people, LGTBQ existing means it's being forced on people, the existence of things is an attack on freedom. Meanwhile people who believe these things are mandating the Ten Commandments being posted in schools

EV hate is a mix of mistaken belief that EVs are too expensive (used models are VERY affordable now), and people never having driven one. They drive so much better and smoother than ICE vehicles. 2021, 2022 and 2023 used EVs are all over the place now for like 50% off original MSRP while having under 40k miles

Rivian's CEO said that their sales are 50/50 Republican/Democrat. I think the nuance is gone(never existed) from online conversations that now have a ton of bots stirring up garbage too.

During it, a well-off couple (one an academic, the other in a well-paying job) pushed for the city to mandate every apartment building in town install an electric vehicle charger. Even the buildings from the 1940s and 50s. Someone had the sense to ask if people living in older buildings with lower rent would be able to afford an EV, to which one of them said, "We bought our 2014 used for $10,000." Uh-huh. Way to show you're out of touch.

I'm not far from Glendale and the locals are pretty livid about all this. Of course they allowed the state and local politicos to deceive them, leaving them with a huge tax burden and the surrounding area ruined forever.

They're not in a forgiving mood around here. Although there continues to be a push for datacenters and here's this commercial property just sitting there and nobody is interesting in pursuing that. No, they'd rather take 100 acres of prime farmland somewhere else and ruin that.

So I was in getting my car repaired and I sauntered over to take a look at the Cadillac EVs.

One of them was a very attractive SUVish vehicle both inside and out. They really tried to make the dang thing glamorous. So, you know, good effort.

Then I checked out the price....Yikes! very very pricey. Uncomfortably so. You could buy a top of the line gasoline powered car for that.

Then assuming it had a great (for an EV) performance to justify that price...I took a look and-

Nope. The mileage and general performance were way below average. The IQcky or whatever they were calling it was a-

Go to your nearest Whole Foods and Starbucks car and that's about it.

Sad.

Though if they ever drop below $10K, I test drive one.

Good riddance. If I need to immediately accelerate from a stop at a light or anyplace, for an emergency or other reason, I don't want one extra millisecond delay after my foot presses down the pedal. My 2019 vehicle has a physical button to disable the auto engine stop/start, thankfully. The default when I start the vehicle is ON. I have not found a way in the secret settings to default disable the ON setting.

Also, I cannot believe frequent engine stops/starts in typical urban and suburban traffic is good for the starter and engine. Maybe I'm wrong.

The other big problem with so much of this alternative Rainbows and Unicorns energy is that virtually none of it is a mature technology. None of it is even in hailing distance of the energy density of petroleum, most of it can't produce energy 24/7 so you have to develop an efficient and safe storage technology to make the systems work etc. It's useful for small, remote locations that need electricity, but it can't be scaled up in it's present form.

111 I am a car guy and an engineer - I still say that EVs have a space in the transportation ecosystem. Look at golf carts - there is a reason why that market is much more evenly split between gas and electric.

Obama and that crew sold people on the idea that they would replace ICE vehicles 1-for-1 and everything was positive about it. The lovely and informative Mrs naturalfake told me something interesting that I didn't know:

Car insurance on an EV now requires 2 policies.

One for the car, and a second for the battery apparently because of all the separate issues caused by the EV's batteries.

Replacing a battery runs so $4K-$10K, so that's a big part of the 2nd policy requirement besides, you know, all the other problems like spontaneous freeway BBQing.

I know what you're saying and I'd like to agree but the fact is that the government has been making manufacturers add kill switches to vehicles for decades now.
I had a 2005 Envoy that could be de-rated via the OnStar system, or even shut off. You became a person of interest to both GM and the feds if you were smart enough to know how to disable their ability to disable.
I'm sure all the others are in on this by now either by coersion or willingly.
As far as I know, your gas powered car won't take you right to the federal clink on demand like a self driving car will, so there's that.

Golf carts are the ideal use case for a battery vehicle. Travels mostly a known-ish distance that's well within the range of the battery system and returns to a fixed base with a charger after every use. I love my golf cart lol. Recently switched over to long-range lithium batteries from the old lead-acid ones. I can do about 50 miles before I need a charger.

That said, I think there is a lot of EV hate, and some of it is justified. There is a concerted effort to punish ICE vehicles and move to more electric stuff...probably on the road to making all personal transportation more inconvenient and expensive, so public transportation is more accepted. On the other hand, my wife drives a Chevy Bolt (EV), and it's great...for what it's designed for; Very efficient daily commuting in and around town. I have a hybrid, and we swap cars if she ever needs to take a long trip for some reason.

153 I always said that EVs right now are where battery power tools were 40 years ago. A novelty, no cord, weeee. In reality you got 1/2 hour out of them if you were lucky, and it took 3-4 hours to charge them. It started with drills and screw guns, so while the fancy new shit was being charged for half a day we continued with the corded drills and screw guns. Then we realized they were just more shit to carry onto the job site for no reason since they spend most of the day plugged into a wall socket.

Government, education and healthcare are such odd environments. I remember meeting with an organization in Kentucky whose employees were covered by the Kentucky Public Employees Retirement System (or something like that). KPERS was the worst funded public employee plan in the country. They had the opportunity to exit the plan if they would agree to fund accrued benefits based on assumptions that included a 7% interest rate. I thought the answer was obvious - hell yes, I will agree to shouldering a 3% obligation for a 7% price. But they could not see it.

Also, Chris Farley would have been a better choice as Ford CEO.

Popes get rather unlimited authority to promote cardinals, so a Francis acolyte following Francis is not a huge surprise. There was some Far East cardinal that everyone called Francis II because everyone assumed he'd take the spot afterwards, but I guess they went with Leo because of the Americanism and ties to Catholic Charities which were already seeing government contract losses.

The Catholic Church is going to have to learn how to live without the government contracts at some point. They're still in the process of losing them, so leadership is in pain.

Just to survive, they'll have to try and grow the congregation again to get more natural donations instead of government contracts if it goes on long enough.

So, fingers crossed.

They shifted interior styling on all of their vehicles to reflect an EV esthetic, replacing high-touch physical controls with endless touch screens. New Audis have an option for a third passenger screen to go along with the flat, hideous instrument display and the oversized media and climate display. And it all looks bland, ugly, and cheap.

Couple that with China-centric exterior styling, and they've created a real mess for themselves.

Also, the part where they already know:

A. Eliminating all gas cars will reduce greenhouse gases by maybe 1%? It's a rounding error.

B. Current electrical grids could not come close to handling a complete conversion to evs, so this is really just a giant Cass Sunstein-style "nudge" to move you out or cars into public transportation (and with that, out of rural and suburban living).

I'm actually somewhat sympathetic. Modern cities and urban sprawl aren't very efficient, they do waste space, and cause a whole host of problems. If you could take a modern metro like Dallas, wipe it clean and plot it out SimCity style, it could be amazing.

But you can't, and trying to convert it into something like that is incredibly difficult, and the central planning involved means commies and WEF types will push agendas, and not just more efficient versions of what people want. So, we go with the more organic sprawl and urban decay model.

Aztek concept car was much better looking. The car was approved for production and then 10 different designers and committees fucked the looks to the pig.

As ugly as the Aztek was, it was ahead of its time. It was a small, cute-ish, "crossover" vehicle at a time when there were almost no cars like that in the market. Those kinds of cars now dominate the industry.

I had a '95 S-10, 4.2L V6, 5-speed, extended cab. It was *great*. Got rear ended, insurance totaled it. I wish that I still had it. Great vehicle.

Spent months looking for a replacement. Finally found low mileage Frontier. 4.0 L. V6, six speed,extended cab. It's Ok, but larger and doesn't handle has well as the S-10. Crappy gas mileage.

We are building out the charging infrastructure at breakneck speed. +30% in 2025. 18,000 new fast chargers in 2025. 19,500 expected in 2026. By 2030 or so EV charging networks should achieve parity with gasoline stations.

So, problem 1 is solved.

Problem 2 is cost. EVs are close to parity with gasoline cars. They'd be much cheaper but for 2 things - batteries and chips. Tesla is building the terafab for the chips. Battery prices are falling with sodium ion and solid state. EVS will very soon be much cheaper than gas cars.

Anyhow, we are in the trough of disillusionment, but we'll soon be out the other side. EVs will make up a substantial fraction of the fleet by 2030. And will do so without subsides, mandates, etc.

Nothing wrong with EVs other than government and corporate goons trying to force them down everyone's throat. They are not for everyone.

328 I can understand fighting "transition" to EVs - as if everyone needs to give up their ICE vehicle.

Yet I bought a 1 year old Tesla Model Y for $36K (14K miles) and it is by far the best car I ever owned.

I know, I know, they all say that.

But if I had to point at just one thing...I'd say the top-end acceleration. You can be going 70 down the highway, hit the gas and you're at 90 in the blink of an eye.
