Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Blowin' Up Stuff Real Good Agin Open ThreadNo this is a new one. This is interesting if you're into guns: The slow-motion guys fire a teeny-tiny pin gun at the back of a bullet to see if they can ignite the second bullet by hitting its primer with its teeny-tiny bullet. I say it's interesting because it turns out, without a barrel, and without a closed hammer at the back of the barrel to force all gas forwards, a bullet that's been sparked off by a hit on its butt isn't much of a projectile. One could say it's a damp squid. Okay that was a teeny-tiny round. Here are some bigger ones. .50 caliber fired into a ballistic head. BTW, a lot of these cause actual fire/light upon impact just due to the energy of impact. I did link this a while back -- firing the .577 Tyrannosaur elephant gun at blocks of ballistic gel. And he tests whether the .577 Tyrannosaur could stop an actual Tyrannosaurus Rex, firing it at a balilstic head in the shape of a Tyrannosaurus's. A nock volley gun is a multi-barrel rifle designed to shoot an entire volley of bullets with one shot. This particular volley gun is called "The Kraken," and has seven barrels each firing a .61 caliber round. Apparently it's based on a gun used in shipboard combat-- you'd fire it from the crow's nest down to the decks. It's a big gun with a lot of recoil. A howitzer shell fired at a ballistic torso. And then, that tank shell fired at a ballistic head. A tank shell fired at a ballistic torso. In this clip, they fire an RPG-7 (rocket propelled grenade, which isn't really what it stood for, but that has been made up as a retronym to explain the Russian initials) at a ballistic torso. In the first hit, the grenade doesn't detonate, because it passes through the torso quickly enough that its detonation mechanism doesn't detect it as an actual stop/hit. So they put some cinderblocks behind the torso, and make the detonator more sensitive, and blow it up real good.Firing bowling balls out of a cannon: Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

The way things are going it kinda makes you long for the days when Reagan could count on Thatcher and John Paul II, and vice versa.
Starmer and Leo are no match for those two. Hell, even Tony Blair was there for W. in Iraq. And John Paul II kept out of it. Pope Leo acts like his predecessors not only approved of wars against apostates and Muslims, but they also called for quite a few Crusades several hundred years ago. I just saw that JPL had to shut down another instrument on Voyager 1 to conserve power. The power source is a plutonium RTG and output is slowly and inexorably decreasing. This leaves only 3 instruments still running. They set up a priority list of which instruments to try to keep running to the last, and they're down to the last 3 on the list now. They're going to try some trick to squeeze more useful life out of it, but it's dangerous, and they're going to try it on Voyager 2 first, which still has more power. Voyager 1 is about 160 AU out, or about 15 billion miles. One-way light travel time is around 23 hours now. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at April 17, 2026 06:52 PM (w6EFb) 26

I approve of the new AOSHQ with two weekly gun threads.
And ace, you make a key point about small arms ammo ignited in some fashion outside the situation for which it's designed - in a chamber, with a barrel on the business end. A fire chiefs' association video some years back tested the reaction of ammo to fire. They used various set-ups and scenarios. As I recall, the most powerful squib ignition they got was considered no hazard to firefighters in their standard turnouts. I should really go look it up and post the link. The behavior of a firearm cartridge ignited without being confined to a chamber and barrel is just a matter of inertia.
The bullet has much more mass than the lightweight brass cartridge casing, thus the bullet tends to stay right where it is and the light casing goes zipping away harmlessly. Posted by: ballistic at April 17, 2026 07:13 PM (oqH4h) 66

The ability to receive a signal, not to mention transmit back to Voyager 1 at that distance is also amazing. That's the DSN, Deep Space Network, with those huge dishes. I read something about the signal strengths involved there. First, the X and S-bands were chosen because there's very little background cosmic noise on those frequencies. But still, and don't hold me to this exactly, the signal strength is like detecting a flashlight in LA from NY (straight line equivalent distance, I'm not sayin the earth is flat...). Mike H., see my link above. Most ammo sort of pops, unburnt powder oozes out. ballistic is correct in his analysis above, but also playing a part is that the brass case, unconstrained by any chamber, expands enough to absorb a lot of the energy from powder ignition.

One of my soldiers got shot when we were going past a burning warehouse with ammo cooking off inside. I always assumed he got shot by one of the rounds, but someone pointed out to me later that when the cartridge cooks off outside a barrel, the bullet is much heavier than the shell casing, so it's the shell casing that flies, and it doesn't fly very far. So he actually probably did get shot by a bad guy.

Riding home I noticed a hole in my shirt. Looked and saw a small C shaped hole in my belly. Whatever is was is still in there.

My dad carried a piece of a German bullet around in his solar plexus from 1945 to 1989. It wasn't life threatening so he got triaged back to duty after a brief stay in the field hospital. Posted by: Caesar North of the Rubicon at April 17, 2026 07:27 PM (eStot) 99
Some of the recovery operations the JPL and other guys have done remotely with spacecraft millions of miles away is also amazing. Read on what happened with SOHO, the solar observatory probe at L1 that provides those cool LASCO images and solar wind and storm info. That thing is still going well past it's planned operational life. When it first got on station, something malfunctioned with the gryos and the spacecraft ended up spinning out of control, in some emergency mode. The spacecraft was nearly lost. They used the big dishes at Arecibo and Goldstone -- interplanetary radar to determine the position and attitude of the spacecraft. Imagine that. A flyspeck floating about 1 million miles from earth, and they're able to determine the attitude and spin rate. From that info, they were able to come up with a plan to send commands and get the thing back up and running. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at April 17, 2026 07:29 PM (w6EFb) 100
So slightly related, I live on an old long rang artillery site, specifically the target.
December of last year I get a letter in the mail from the Army and the Gov notifying me that my property has been declared a superfund site. Interesting, ... wasn't informed of that before closing. Anyway, they built an army camp north of ATL in the 20s timeframe to muster Americans for deployment to EU. Then around the 40s they turned it into an artillery training, ammo storage/handling site. That's not where I live, that was turned into a tiny municipal airport. But from that site they were training by firing straight southeast towards ATL, and specifically at the small mountain-hill my property is at. So the danger is unexploded excitement. At least French had the guts to show up and air out his thoughts to a real interviewer.

"In the first hit, the grenade doesn't detonate, because it passes through the torso quickly enough that its detonation mechanism doesn't detect it as an actual stop/hit."
IIRC that's what happened to Tammy Duckworth in her UH-60. Also somebody in one of the trucks in Mogadishu had a round stuck in him that didn't explode. Heard a story about an NVA soldier that they brought into the aid station with a live unexploded 40mm round in him. The doc in charge moved him out far away from the aid station and let him bleed out, then called EOD. Posted by: Caesar North of the Rubicon at April 17, 2026 07:37 PM (eStot) 104

It would be interesting to know how (or if!) they searched for unexploded ordinance. That can be a big deal, because of all the scrap iron in the ground. AFAIK, the best way to find it is via a towed array of squid magnetometers connected to a GPS system.
