The Morning Rant: Broken Windows Theory

bengraffiti26.jpg

Great cities fail for reasons that seem unimportant, but in retrospect are monumental. The 1982 "Broken Windows Theory" of James Q. Wilson and George Kelling has been mocked and minimized by the rulers of the very cities whose decline can be linked to it, but the correlation is undeniable.

It is simple and obvious; Visible signs of disorder such as litter, graffiti, minor traffic infractions, turnstile-jumping, public drinking, and a thousand other seemingly trivial violations of the basic rules of human conduct, lead to the inescapable conclusion that no one is in charge...that the social order is eroding.

The cascade is clear: law-abiding people begin to avoid those areas, informal social control decreases, those areas become more attractive to offenders, serious crime increases, and the cycle deepens and spreads.

New York City is a perfect example of this. Beginning in the 1960s with four consecutive Democrat mayors, the city descended into chaos. Murder rates tripled, armed robbery rates quadrupled, abandoned buildings became ubiquitous. The city was covered in litter and graffiti, with burned and abandoned cars littering the streets and highways.

But 30 years of violence and decay ended abruptly with the election of Rudy Giuliani as mayor in 1994. His fix was simple. Zero tolerance for crime, no matter how trivial. "Stop And Frisk" became the norm, littering was taken seriously, subway cars were cleaned of graffiti, traffic laws were enforced, turnstile jumping became a crime again, and the hundreds of seemingly trivial, seemingly victimless crimes were taken seriously.

The result was a new golden age for New York City. And the next mayor continued many of Giuliani's policies, so for 20 years the city was an invigorated and vibrant place. But as usual, all good things must come to an end, and the changing demographics of NYC allowed the election of progressive Democrat mayors who carefully gutted the policies that had protected NYC from itself! And as fast as Giuliani repaired the damage from the previous series of Democrats, de Blasio and Adams allowed it to return. And the newest mayor will add fanatical Islamist policies to his destructive progressivism that rewards criminality.

But this time there is no core of traditional middle class New Yorkers who will push back against the decay. The city has become a city of immigrants...both legal and illegal...who have no memory of New York City's glory. They have brought their home countries' sensibilities and cultural mores, and they do not include those things that can again save New York City.

So why Big Ben adorned with graffiti? I have been to London perhaps 20 times in the past 10 years, and I see the exact same thing happening, albeit slower. Graffiti in London? Yes. Loud and antisocial behavior on the Tube? Yes. Spitting in the streets? Yes. Litter and mess and aggressive driving and street crime and all of the things that will speed the decay in a vicious feedback loop. It's here, and shows no signs of changing.

London also has a generation's head start on the Islamist policies, with a Muslim mayor and a huge Muslim population that is becoming restive, aggressive, and demanding that London bends to it.

And that will be coming to NYC soon

I recall reading in the mid-2000's that Londan was over 50% foreign born, and likely more due to illegal immigrants flying under the radar. Twenty years later and it's a conquered city.

WHen people respond to Mamdani's projects "But this will make the productive people flee!" they seem to mis that this is the point. Clear out the old New Yorkers to make space (and occupy quickly sold real estate) for the new, foreign, non-western population he represents. He wants normies to flee -- that's the goal, not an unintended consequence.

Glad JJ got out, and hope that any remaining 'rons can escape this crumbling city, too.

The New York Times ran an article during this period denouncing Giuliani because the evil NYPD was enforcing these rules in a "vibrant Brooklyn neighborhood".

The evil cops were trying to turn the neighborhood into "Mayberry", you see.

The NYT quoted a number of people in the neighborhood denouncing the NYPD's enforcement policies.

It turned out that all the people the NYT quoted in the article had one thing in common - they had all been arrested for dealing heroin.

35 So it seems that Cloward Piven works until it does not.
We see it may work in a neighborhood to get city money thrown at a problem but once CP is played against a larger geography or population there is a great chance that normal people will look the other way or just move away from the problem.
Then there is less tax base (both income and property) and the people that Play the CP card are left with less.

Played at the State level you end up with a great place like CO seeing 100 business (Fortune 1000 level) leave since 2020.

Third world environment. Related: Colorado's latest push to unravel safe, ordered society is The Tamale Act:
Should home cooks have the right to sell food out of their own kitchens? Well, the Tamale Act under consideration in the Colorado legislature is one example from the food freedom movement now gaining nationwide traction. . . .
That's Ryan Gonzalez, the Republican state representative sponsoring the Colorado proposal to bring those DIY entrepreneurs out of the shadows. It's dubbed the Tamale Act after the tamale ladies in his neighborhood in Greeley, about 50 miles northeast of Denver. Gonzalez says legitimacy would bring them more economic opportunity, a path to build a strong customer base before going all-in on business investments.

GONZALEZ: This is a policy that will be a stepping stone for cottage food vendors to eventually start a business and get there and have a restaurant and participate, pay the taxes. . .

See, third world people should get to engage in their third world commerce without pesky regulations from their host country!

We can guess why these communists are waging war on their own cities and flooding them with 3rd world illegals but it's obviously not a coincidence.

The monkey in the wrench for them is Trump. US providing the overwhelming amount of support for NATO allowed the EU twats to spend crazy big on social programs and other idiocies. And now it all might come crashing down on them. The Iran war has exposed them as feckless and completely unprepared to support an ally let alone defend themselves.

This means Trump has record high immigration detention, record high immigrant removal, record high asylum denial, and migrants arrested under him have very low chances of getting out.

CATO analysis on the early phase of Trump's immigration crackdown:

Refugees down 90%, permanent immigrants down 50% or more, H-1B -25% (-80% for new applicants), students down 40%. Trump not only has a net outflow of illegals but an increasingly narrow entry for legal migrants.

I would say Yes gladly to that, but as far as i have seen in most areas on NJ that i have visited, Conservatives in NJ are either outnumbered by the whack-a-do Left or are just too apathetic/too busy working jobs to get out and fight, and when we do try and get heard, we get shouted out/down by the big mouthed and aggressive Leftists. We get arrested, we get to go to court with a nice friendly Leftist judge and get fined/jail time. Leftists get arrested, well they normally go in the court, and the DA's drop the charges or the lovely activist judges toss the case out. It is difficult to get any good out of the corrupt as hell NJ court system. Wish i could be more optimistic about NJ, but it gets more and more difficult and crazier by the day here. My father witnessed it first hand as a veteran NJ Police Officer, and i have seen it first hand as well. 135 NYC and CA have done a great job of driving those who oppose the Democrat Socialist agenda out and relocating to more sane locales.
This ensures that a Giuliani-type will not ever be elected to fix the descend back into 1070's style crime and chaos in NYC.
Nor will a GOP Governor ever have the ability to effect real change in CA.
The Sacto Democrats hold a super majority in the CA Assembly and Senate. Thus, even if Steve Hilton or Chad Bianco manage to overcome the completely corrupt mail-in, drop box and ballot harvesting machine that the CA Democrats have engineered to ensure their hold on power, that GOP Governor's agenda will be DOA and any vetoes he attempts to thwart the CTA/SEIU/Trial Lawyers from their continued destruction of the Golden State will be over-ridden.
Sadly, there is no saving CA at this point. Or NYC.

Posted by: SSBN 656 (G) at April 16, 2026 11:41 AM (dmDsy)

No, it's anti-legal immigrant too.

Hence the drops in asylum claims, naturalizations, visa grants (including, yes, H1-Bs which are down 90% for new issuances), and the sudden embrace of denaturalization as a response to criminal activity.

It's straight anti-immigrant.

And I'm all for it.

And I'm not implying that Trump is planning on firing Miller. From the outside, it seems like they have a decent professional relationship and Miller understands that he's not to make an ass of himself (he's apparently been very against the Iran action but doesn't interview about it).

Yep. Detroit has made a giant turnout in the past 10-12 years. There are still a lot of shitty areas. But the trend is definitely in the right direction. It’s not the Detroit people think of.

Entrenched stereotypes of cities never die though and Detroit will always be seen as what it was at its worst. I see the same thing with SLC. People still think of a conservative Mormon all white city from 1985. That’s not a thing anymore, Today’s SLC is illegals, gangs and blue hairs.

181 Los Angeles is a cautionary tale, as is San Francisco (I suppose).

Democrats, when elected, spend money on other Democrats and, mostly, those people contribute nothing to society except resource consumption. New Jersey state spending per resident is estimated at $9130, versus Florida at $4960 (Texas is even lower, at $4620).

The extra money spent delivers no additional services to me. In fact, the roads are worse and the state service providers are ruder, less competent and less courteous. Having lived in both Florida and New Jersey, I can honestly say I have no idea why anyone thinks New Jersey is $4200 per resident a better place.

I assume that is the price of political patronage. In other words, each NJ resident is sending $4200 to Democrat partisans masquerading as "state workers".

Boston is a very old city, obviously. The roads were laid out first for horses and horse drawn vehicles. And over the years the geography of the city changed as parts of the Bay were filled in to create what Boston looks like today.

In some areas new roads were grafted on to old ones, roads ended abruptly for seemingly no reason and all sorts of odd situations. The area I used to live in, the Back Bay, was just that, the Bay. When they laid out the roads it was in a very logical grid pattern and the streets are alphabetical. That area is a snap.

217 Boston is a very old city, obviously.

Posted by: JackStraw

A few days ago, someone posted a map that was on Reddit showing the various land reclamations in Boston since colonial times. I shared that with my brother-in-law, whose daughter lives in Boston, and he said all those reclamations are probably the reason why it's such a horrible city to drive in, with some streets not even in a straight line for more than a block or two.

Outright pause requires an act of Congress.

There are too many visa categories that were passed as "shall issue" on the executive rather than "may issue". Things like spousal visas or some classes of worker visas (hence why H1-B is reduced and not eliminated).

232 I think Trump just threw down on Xi's attempts to send MANPADS and other weaponry to Iran.

Trump's Iran Blockade Just Got Bigger

“In addition to enforcing the blockade, all Iranian vessels, vessels with active OFAC sanctions, and vessels suspected of carrying contraband, are subject to belligerent right to visit and search,” U.S. Naval Forces Central Command (NAVCENT) announced on Thursday. But here's where it gets really interesting: "These vessels, regardless of location, are subject to visit, board, search, and seizure.”

Emphasis added because that's serious.

Regardless of location? If I'm reading that right, the "Persian Gulf blockade" just went global.

Joint Chiefs chair Gen. Dan Caine confirmed the expanded scope this morning during a presser with War Secretary Pete Hegseth. "Under the command of Adm. Paparo, we’ll actively pursue any Iranian-flagged vessel or any vessel attempting to provide material support to Iran," Caine said. "This includes dark fleet vessels carrying Iranian oil. As most of you know, dark fleet vessels are those illicit or illegal ships evading international regulations, sanctions, or insurance requirements."

282 I was in London ONCE. Took myself off the tube because some asshole put his armpit in my face. Also got drug out of pub wanting to fight assholes who said "Fooking Americans" Told that bitch that he would be speaking fooking German if not for us. Not an enjoyable experience. Can't take me anywhere.
