Yea tech. The data center backlash is going to either strangle a new industry in the US or make Elon a multi trillionaire by driving them to space. Or both.

Mornin'
I don't know what to think about AI and data centers. The very wealthy nerds,,uh,,people pushing it by saying things, smugly, about how it was going to eliminate jobs of the peasants,,er,,lower castes,,,,I mean people, didn't help. People tend to react negatively to that, especially ones with families. This has moved way too fast and nobody is ready for the consequences, both for and against. The impacts of rampant building of the data centers against the backdrop of our inability to build any supporting infrastructure, like the power generation and distribution grid, because we are paralyzed by lawfare will be our undoing.
There are plenty of debates to be had about the pros and cons of AI and physical AI, such as robotics and self driving. The problem is that the genie isn’t going back in the bottle. It’s going to move somewhere that will not have the debate. Posted by: Pete Bog at April 14, 2026 04:47 AM (WlUfk) 11

For all we know, that was the best that Branding could do after a fierce internal battle fighting off the forces of CPRLNK and Linky McLinkface. In fact, that's my headcanon now: exhausted from their victory over the forces of evil and retardation, they couldn't protect every vowel; but in losing one battle, they won the war. Heroes, truly. Too many jokes about assassinations on the Ides of March, and they changed it. There were probably other, bureaucratic reasons, but that would be as good as any.

Last night, as I mentioned on the ONT, I told Miss Linda about the Kansas trip. I've been putting it off, and then for the last few days she's been ill with some kind of stomach bug. But I knew I couldn't put it off any longer.
Reaction: nothing. The enthusiasm was about as if I'd told her I was taking Stirling the black cat back to his shelter -- in fact, she'd have been wildly vocal about *that*. No reaction to pics of the nice houses I want to look at; no reaction to pics of bison in the Kansas travel brochure. Almost complete silence. Oh, well. Nothing I can do about it; it is what it is. A Stanford report highlights a growing disconnect between AI insiders and humans. (Tech Crunch) This disconnectedness of AI insiders brought to mind a character from Kurt Vonnegut's "Cat's Cradle": Franklin "Frank" Hoenikker is Felix Hoenikker's older son, and a Major General in San Lorenzo. He is the brother of Newt and Angela Hoenikker. He is an utterly technically minded person who is unable to make decisions except for giving technical advice This dud not end well in that story, either. In southern France there is a UNESCO World Heritage Site called Pont du Garde. It’s a section of a triple arched Roman aqueduct spanning a river canyon. The aqueduct carried water to “the City of Fountains” Nimes. Ran something like 60 kilometers at a 1% slope. Amazing feat of engineering completed almost two thousand years ago.
It fell into disrepair and was abandoned 1,000 years later because no one wanted to, or remembered how to maintain it. Posted by: Pete Bog at April 14, 2026 06:05 AM (WlUfk) 66

>>> The Canadians will cry, whine and cheat like they do at curling, and still get their asses beat.
Good grief. Are people so blind to the nature of professional sports? Did the Blue Jays reach the World Series last year because there are so many talented baseball players from Toronto? The top hockey talent and organization is in America because of economics. Canada can easily take pride in the origin of hockey and its deep local roots. Maybe we should just place an MLB team in the Dominican Republic and make it all local. Posted by: fluffy at April 14, 2026 06:39 AM (AN2gy) 87

Let’s spend hundreds of millions to resurrect an obsolete technology because we don’t have the collective will to approve and implement solutions that exist and are readily available because our current governmental structure allows endless delays and impositions at no cost to the people imposing the delays.

Morning, rons and 'ronettes. 56 degrees here at Stately Poppins Manor, with a high in the low 70s predicted.
I'd like to enjoy the sunny weather, but I've got a full-blown cold, with wheezing, congestion and all the trimmings. I've been living on soup, tea and lozenges since Sunday night and I expect this nonsense to last right through the week. Ugh. I've fallen behind on my writing, so I must get at least a page of my novel done so that I feel I've accomplished something. Of course, I did write my new Book Thread post and sent it to CBD, so that's something, at least. There is one positive thing Karen has done for this country. When we came within a hair of our evil government taking our gas appliances away, the AWFL backlash forced Biden's handlers to backpedal and ludicrously claim that Republicans made it up.

It really is the little things that lay it bare.
"Take their coffeemakers," and "take their gas stoves" are initiatives that make no sense and have no point except in the context of leaders who want to make their hated subjects miserable for the simple, sadistic pleasure of dominating them. It also helped that the internet is a thing and a lot of dems were getting bullied with "Why do YOU have a gas appliance if it's not good enough for us?" Posted by: NR Pax at April 14, 2026 07:11 AM (RjOoY) 110

Correct. The forever chemicals get stored in places like the testicles making the scrotum swell and become large, red and distended. Or maybe it's the saline I injected into mine...dunno. Posted by: Barney Fag at April 14, 2026 07:17 AM (4eiIm) 111

"I'm halfway through it--it's 34 pages!--and so far, to me, it reads like Mean Girl writing."
I get that. I read it a couple of days ago and most of the stuff has faded away in my mind. As with anything you read where there's lots of money involved you have to sift through to find stuff of value. A lot of these people throwing shade are competing against each other. I found it interesting the Sam doesn't really have a good handle on the nuts and bolts of what makes this work. To many technically orientated folks that makes him sus out the gate. It's pretty much who can beat the drum the loudest and longest. The dumbest thing is that most people know you really can't trust anyone, period. It's the wild, wild West. It's simple - too many believe that "more people" = "always betterer", and cannot comprehend that populations move and fluctuate. Witness the worldwide (well, mostly) animus directed at Japan over the past decade. Posted by: man at April 14, 2026 07:45 AM (XuXeR) 125
