You can, although I understand it's not particularly flavorsome. It was a popular centerpiece in mediaeval and early Renaissance times, but more for show than anything else.

I made a quick check of the five mediaeval cookery books I have, but although I know I've seen a swan recipe, I can't find one just now.

Posted by: cmeat at April 16, 2026 09:42 AM (R11M+)

63 A complex arrangement of shapes. At first glance you think the woman's head is attached to the swans' bodies, and the arms to the right of the muscular boatman are disembodied. Then you realize there is a complete woman there, lifting a small cushion or mattress out of a skiff; the arms belong to another man who is either salaam-ing or inspecting the boat; and there is a third figure toting two large pillows.

On the other hand, there are two trousered legs stepping out of another boat with swans in it. If there are a torso and head attached to those legs, I can't see them.

Swan Upping at Cookham? Is "upping" a British slang term?

I understand the ancient Romans, probably in kingship or Republic days, used geese as warning animals outside the mint. "Moneta" or something like that, "to warn," giving us our words "admonish," "money," and "monetary."

I'll have to check that out. I'm not a very good cook, so my interest is more on history and the appetite that reading about food engenders.* If that sort of thing appeals to you, I recommend Bridget Ann Henisch's Fast and Feast: Food in Medieval Society. It's about the Middle Ages' attitudes toward food, its preparation and presentation.

125 MP4, there was an interesting detail in the Stan and Ollie movie. It starts out in 1937, when the duo were at their height in Hollywood.

Ollie tells Stan that he's having a party on his yacht, and mentions that Clark Gable and Carole Lombard are going to be there.

Assuming this is true, and not artistic license, it blows me away. You think of Oliver Hardy as just an exasperated fat guy in comedy shorts. But here he was hosting freakin' Clark Gable, the King of Hollywood. Amazing. It's easy to forget what a small town that place was back in the day.

Very true. Hollywood was very much a company town, where stars, character actors and technical people all ate and socialized (in their own orbits) at the same places. Of course, when Beverly Hills and Bel Air became swanky spots, the big names moved, but you could still star-watch at the Brown Derby or Musso & Frank's.

The Stanley Spencer Gallery - Swan Upping

Swan Upping returns to Cookham: a living tradition
This July, the River Thames will once again host the historic Swan Upping ceremony, a royal tradition dating back to the 12th century. As the flotilla of skiffs glides past the village of Cookham, visitors will witness a spectacle of pageantry, and heritage—just as Stanley Spencer once did.

Swan Upping is the annual census of the swan population on stretches of the Thames in the counties of Middlesex, Surrey, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Oxfordshire. This historic ceremony dates from the twelfth century, when the Crown claimed ownership of all mute swans. The King’s Swan Marker and the accompanying Swan Uppers of the Vintners’ and Dyers’ Livery Companies use six traditional Thames rowing skiffs in their five-day journey upstream to Abingdon.
-
Stanley Spencer’s deep connection to Cookham and its traditions is beautifully captured in his painting “Swan Upping at Cookham” (1915–19). In this work, Spencer transforms the ceremonial into the spiritual, portraying the Swan Uppers as almost angelic figures... (more)

People in New York City who are looking forward to the city-owned grocery stores promised by the new democratic socialist (communist) Mayor Zohran Mamdani are going to be waiting for quite a while.

Not only is the first new store going to cost upwards of $30 million in tax dollars, it’s not going to be ready until 2029. Just think of how many people are going to get in on that grift over the course of the next three years. There is apparently another store that will open in 2027 which won’t require construction because it’ll be housed in an existing building

Australia's failed "green" domestic energy policies had already sparked a fuel-supply shock shortly after the U.S.-Iran conflict disrupted tankers at the Hormuz chokepoint. Now, a fire has broken out at the larger of Australia's two remaining oil refineries, adding even more fuel supply woes.

Victoria state fire authorities said the blaze erupted at Viva Energy's 120,000-barrel-per-day Geelong refinery, one of only two operating oil refineries left in Australia. The refinery accounts for roughly 10% to 12% of Australia's fuel supply while covering about half of Victoria's fuel demand

And the latest study indicates that taking edibles or marijuana in any form once per week by a man makes birth defects more likely and conception more difficult.

"Male marijuana use during the preconception period is associated with a significantly increased risk of spontaneous abortion (miscarriage) for the female partner. A prospective cohort study found that men who used marijuana ≥1 time/week in the two months before conception had twice the risk (adjusted hazard ratio of 2.0) of their partners experiencing a miscarriage compared to non-users, while use less than once a week showed no significant increase in risk.

The risk is most pronounced in early pregnancy (before 8 weeks' gestation) and among men aged 35 and older, where the hazard ratio rises to 4.1. Researchers suggest this link is driven by THC binding to cannabinoid receptors in testicular tissue and sperm. . . "

Seems to have been a mixture of things.

Sears made anti-Trump noises and was a bad campaigner.

The plan that put Youngkin in place (look up the Virginia Project) got completely abandoned and Democrats took up the strategy instead.

Youngkin did just this side of nothing to combat fraud in the state (oh...he did the minimum on voter rolls...huzzah...I'm sure Richmond and Arlington are otherwise pitch perfect and never do anything wrong in their counting ever and don't need serious investigation from the VA DOJ).

And the shutdown probably helped juice the numbers, but it was going to be a GOP loss no matter what because Youngkin actively abandoned the Virginia Project.

266 Men adopt feminist positions only to get into a woman's pants.
Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh

Kind of. There are plenty of men that are so weak, slothful, and pathetic, that they adopt Leftwing positions so they can reap the benefits of other people's work. Modern feminism is 50% socialism, so they naturally coexist. The other 50% of man-hating and victim Olympics are just part of the Lefty experience, so again, just assumed.

Men have to achieve what women view as valuable to compete for attention, so Lefty men do end up embarrassing themselves trying to be the most Lefty, emotional, and feminist...which counterintuitively makes them so soy even liberal women don't find them sexually attractive (but they're great friends and allies...for men (spit)).

Unfortunately, the US military has a long tradition of West Point ring-knocker flag officers who think that the President and others in the military chain of command works for them, rather than the other way around. Goes back to the beginning with that coward Horatio Gates, who openly despised George Washington during the Revolution and would regularly ignore Washington's orders, even plotting against him with the Conway Cabal.

Lincoln had serious problems with this, like when McClellan refused to take the Army into the field on a regular basis, or the head of the Ordnance Dept who just came right out and refused Lincoln's orders to acquire repeating arms like the Spenser, Sharps and Henry rifles after Lincoln was shown their clear advantages.

MacArthur's stupid shit in WWII and Korea is a direct descendent. Dood was seriously overrated as a field commander, did pretty good as Governor of occupied Japan, to be fair.

History won't be kind to modern prima donnas like Mattis.
