STORY OF THE WORK:

Archibald John Motley Jr.'s "Nightlife" (1943)

"Nightlife" by Archibald John Motley Jr. is a vibrant oil on canvas painting created in 1943, capturing the dynamic energy of Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood during the Harlem Renaissance. The work is notable for its use of bold colors and dynamic composition, reflecting the lively atmosphere of African American urban culture in the mid-20th century.

Motley, an influential figure in the Harlem Renaissance, was known for his depictions of African American life and his exploration of themes related to race and identity. His work provides a critical visual commentary on the social dynamics of the time, contributing significantly to the narrative of African American history in art.

"Nightlife" exemplifies Motley's mastery in portraying the complexities of cultural identity and the vibrancy of community life. The painting remains an important piece in understanding the cultural and historical context of African American experiences during this era.

Think how much more lively this scene would have been had not every participant been laboring under sixteen tons of oppression. Each.

What oppresses their descendants these days is the crabbed and bilious spectre of perpetual racism that their leaders and their AWFL "allies" keep spewing in their eyes and ears.

Posted by: Krebs 'v' Carnot: Epic Battle of the Cycling Stars (TM) Imprison! Imprison! Imprison! at April 08, 2026 09:54 AM (q/Jc0)

108 The subject matter of the scene doesn't appeal to me but that is personal preference, not art criticism. Motely certainly gets across the busy, frantic, activity of a big city bar at night. He makes the viewer hear the noise and music, the clink of bottles and glasses. the undercurrent of conversations. The somewhat exaggerated postures of the dancers suggest an almost manic movement. Even the people, mostly women, sitting seem to be waiting for a chance to join the melee. I don't know if the colors used for the clothing is significant, men mostly in shades of purple and women in brighter, lighter colors, but it seems to mean something.

Not something I would display but it is effective at conveying an atmosphere.

Posted by: JTB at April 08, 2026 09:54 AM (yTvNw)

109 Aside from fedoras and the one bowler hat, many of the men are wearing newsboy caps. In those days a man was not considered fully dressed unless he had a hat or cap when he left the house. Caps were cheaper than fedoras, even when you could buy a nice Stetson, Dobbs, or Mallory lid for $6.50.

123 What oppresses their descendants these days is the crabbed and bilious spectre of perpetual racism that their leaders and their AWFL "allies" keep spewing in their eyes and ears.

In the late 1950s, blacks were on track to match other ethnic groups by the 1980s. That trend line reversed sharply almost immediately after the so-called "Great Society" went into effect.

If the judiciary wasn't so corrupt, a class action lawsuit by black Americans against the DNC would be quite entertaining. LBJ's "I'll have those n-----s voting Democrat for 100 years" would be the star piece of evidence, of course.

179 NightlifeDate:
1943

Artist:
Archibald John Motley Jr. (American, 1891–1981)

About this artwork
A palpable energy and sense of movement enliven Nightlife, Archibald Motley’s portrayal of a crowded cabaret in the South Side neighborhood of Bronzeville in Chicago. With stylized figures, an array of diagonal lines, and heightened colors keyed to shades of magenta and violet, the artist captured the exuberance of city dwellers out on the town. Motley created a network of gestures and glances among the people, drawing attention to the various social interactions that animate the scene.

The composition is an exploration of artificial lighting. Motley was inspired, in part, to paint Nightlife after having seen Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks (1942.51), which had entered the Art Institute’s collection the prior year.
--
About Nighthawks Edward Hopper recollected, “unconsciously, probably, I was painting the loneliness of a large city.”
--
Above references by the Chicago Art Institute
---

With that comparison of paintings, it can be seen who was having fun & who was not. 😉

Interesting but wouldn't hang today's selection. Thanks.

You have heard of reconnaissance by fire. This is reconnaissance by ceasefire. You will be able to tell if they have control or not by whether they can maintain the ceasefire. If they cannot, then there is no national government. Hard to rebuild a nuclear program without a national government to steal the wealth of the nation. So it devolves into a warlord state. Puts a damper on a lot of things. Would hate to be Europe or China, getting held up every time a tanker transits the strait.

Darn shame that is.

Now somewhat more problematic. Being able to go in and collect the uranium if there is no central authority to allow for safe conduct.

297 Awww. This is sad. Break out the Kleenex...

From GatewayPundit.

Employees at ESPN, a brand synonymous with sports broadcasting for nearly five decades, face an uncertain future.

According to John Ourand of Puck, an “unexpected revenue dip” will trigger imminent layoffs at ESPN.

“I can now confirm that another round [of layoffs] is approaching,” Ourand wrote.

In June 2023, ESPN announced that it had parted ways with NFL reporter Suzy Kolber, NFL draft analyst Todd McShay, and nearly two dozen other familiar faces.

Unlike its most recent purge, this time, the network will not slash on-air talent.

“I’m told the number will land near 30, with cuts expected in the coming weeks, primarily in off-camera departments,” Ourand added

Truth. The South is a laid back place. It has to be with temps hitting the 100s and being as humid as it is. : ). I don’t care for AL myself, but MS, LA, GA and FL are awesome, as are other former Confederate states.

According to John Ourand of Puck, an “unexpected revenue dip” will trigger imminent layoffs at ESPN.

“I can now confirm that another round [of layoffs] is approaching,” Ourand wrote.

Apparently a team of baboons were firing missiles at Israel, UAE, Saudi, and Iraq last night on Tousi TV. After a few hours of patience, Israel then sent air strikes to Tehran and other areas of Iran. My hope is they flattened Iran.

Yemen tried hard to fire missiles at Israel but they went kaput. Tousi said they have inferior made ones that never hit anything, the Houthi retards.

The USA may have ceased firing, but things were hot last night in Turban Town. I could find NOTHING in the MSM about this.
