78 From Art Institute of Chicago

On May 23, 1948, Norman Rockwell went to Braves Field in Boston for a doubleheader where the Boston Braves swept the Chicago Cubs.

The renowned artist had received a baseball-related commission from the Saturday Evening Post and ultimately focused his attention on the contrast between the losing and dejected Cubs players and the elated Braves fans behind the dugout. The result was The Dugout, which has become an iconic portrayal of the 1948 Chicago Cubs.

This painting, a large, early oil study for The Dugout, was recently given to the Art Institute of Chicago.

89 It's the expressions and postures that make this sort of funny and ironic. The crowd cheering (or jeering) loudly while the older players are just quiet, dealing with losing the game. The disappointment on the bat boy's face and his slumped stance is such a contrast to the guys in the dugout and the noise from the stands.

The more I look at the scene the more complex it seems. The reaction of the boy makes it rather touching, not just funny.

203 192 After the Nats won the World Series in their Cinderella season in 2019 the MLB went full woke. That was my last link to team sports. (Just as well. The Nats have been terrible since then.) NBA, NFL, MLB, etc., gone. More time for worthwhile hobbies.

I miss following my Spurs, Broncos, Astros…but the NFL made lots of stupid changes and embraced being political, which killed the escapism element. The NBA just went full political, which again killed the escapism element. I stopped following baseball after 2012 which was the last season the Astros were in the NL. I guess I could have adopted my father’s team, the Cardinals, but especially after the stupid rule changes, baseball is dead to me.

When the hockey teams punked Canada out of gold medals that was the most fun I had with sports in years. Yeah, I know, it’s the Olympics which are deeply unpopular here, but that was a feel good moment. Especially hearing Jack Hughes saying in the post game interview “I love the USA”. Good stuff.

210 Hockey is basically the last bastion of professional sports being fun to watch.

I never really cared a lot about the NFL. Stopped caring about the MLB after being a Braves fan during the Glavine/Smoltz/Avery/Maddux years. Goes without saying that the NBA has been a hot pile of steaming crap for decades.

I stil try to root for my alma mater in college football, but NIL and the system of free agency it created have all but ruined it.

BTW - I made a shit ton of money shorting UNC last year. They qualified as the worst. Belichick was too busy fucking his 25 year old girl friend then to be bothered coaching a team. Way to go Tarheels.

My theory on baseball managers was always this - 90% of managers could be at least "good" simply by doing normal expected things and getting out of the way. The other 10% were hopeless cases.

In reality about third of the 90% ALWAYS had to stick their nose in and make their mark and they were idiots who had no business managing a baseball game. Those along with the other 10% were your "bad" managers, some select ones worse than others.

Then you had your roughly top 4 or 5%, the Bobby Cox's (piss be upon him) that knew enough about what they were doing to actually make a positive difference and be a GREAT manager.

I think if I did bet sports, I'd basically go at it by dividing the given league in two just prior to the beginning of the regular season - "doomed" and "possibly could do something, even if it takes a miracle."

Then, I'd divide my gambling budget between the crappiest two teams in group #2, and bet them to hit various milestones through the season, but before it begins, when the odds against are highest.

That how I won money on Trump, and others.
