Yeah, they splatter and spit, but it's worth the few minutes of cleanup. And if you have an outdoor grill...even better! Here is Alton Brown's recipe, but it's really just a technique. Beef Sliders with Griddled Onions punches way above its weight. There is a great joint in Hackensack called White Manna, that has been around for years, that makes maybe the best ones I have ever had, including from my own kitchen. There is always a line, which makes it less appealing, but still, they are mighty tasty! These are some of the flavors that a well-known UK chocolate company sells. Actually, TArragon & Mustard is firmly on the weird side. ![]() ![]() I don't know if adding horseradish to your deviled eggs will make them the best ever, but I do know that you are going to be irritated by this recipe, because it is one of those horrid ones with the interminable filler before you get to the actual recipe. I have seen no evidence of decreasing prices, but maybe the bursting started somewhere else! I think the sweet spot is $40-$60 for excellent and interesting bottles, and bumping that to $100 gets you an incremental improvement in quality, but nothing mind-blowing. More than that and I think you are paying for hype and rarity, which may look good in your liquor cabinet, but doesn't translate to more quality in the bottle. I can see the chocolate and mulled wine WAY before the tarragon and mustard. I mean chocolate and red wine are a known combination that works. When's the last time you're heard of someone adding mustard to chocolate, and then for funsies, tossing in taragon, too?

The company is co-owned by Ryan Reynolds
Methinks he sold the company a while ago for an Imperial buttload of money. I've had the gin once. It was nothing special. Yes, Ryan Reynolds sold Aviation American Gin to beverage giant Diageo in a deal announced in August 2020 for up to $610 million. Reynolds acquired an equity stake in 2018 and acted as the brand's creative lead, significantly boosting sales before the acquisition, which included an upfront payment of $335 million Posted by: Archimedes at April 12, 2026 04:07 PM (Riz8t) 16

Aviation is good in an Aviation, huh? Figures. The Sazerac brand of rye works perfectly in a Sazerac.
I once made a Sazerac that was astonishingly good. I was blown away. Unfortunately it turned out that I had accidentally picked up my bottle of Sazerac 18 year, which is way too good for cocktails. I had picked up a bottle at a small liquor store for $75. Once I tasted it, I rushed back for the other two that were sitting on the shelf. Now it sells for over $1,000, if you can find it. Mine were gone a long time ago, though. Posted by: Splunge at April 12, 2026 04:09 PM (KEowH) 20

Speaking of the leftover cake. So, I tried last year's big trend - chuck any flavored soda into any flavored box mix and go to town.
I had a $1 Duncan Hines classic vanilla and a VERY high end soda (that I had gotten on a huge sale - maybe that was a warning) that my kids wanted and then wouldn't drink after tasting a bottle - some type of organic butterbeer. Tossed the 2 together and dang, if that cake didn't come out great! I did a smear of all fruit plum preserves (for sharpness and to get the jar out of my fridge) and then vanilla frosting. Kids LOVED it, and now I know how to use up the last 3 bottles. I'm gonna experiment with different all fruit preserves under the vanilla/vanilla...and may also try a spice cake box mix b/c that also seems "right"... Easiest cake I've ever made...not gonna buy soda just to make cake, but when I have it... Posted by: Nova Local at April 12, 2026 04:10 PM (tOcjL) 22

Brought a few bottles home to dad, and thus began our quest for fire. Melindas is probably the best "pure" (no extract) hot sauce, IMO. Also recommend El Yucateco. I make clear ice cubes, about 1.5 inches in L, W, and H, and use a simple rig I got on Amazon, no longer available.
Clear cubes. Bartender ice. "Craft" ice cubes. Where did "craft" come from? As in "hand-crafted" cocktails? Have we always made martinis using martini machines? And are all hamburger patties made in big machines with molds and conveyors and chutes? I looked at a refrigerator yesterday in the Home Depot, one that had a thing in the freezer for making spherical clear ice. A little bigger than a golf ball. The feature is called "craft ice." I bought a mold to make clear ice spheres, one at a time, to have clear ice up in my little woods camp. But I prefer the cubes. The booze this afternoon on the clear ice is Woodford Reserve Straight Rye. Yum. Posted by: M. Gaga at April 12, 2026 04:22 PM (KiBMU) 41

Recently saw a video about making potato salad using chilled mashed potatoes -- as the base -- then stirring in all the stuff you would normally add to boiled/diced potatoes ... Video showed mayo, onion, celery, pickle relish, chunks of hard-boiled egg, bacon bits, a touch of mustard, dried dill, salt and pepper ... Am gonna give this one a try come summertime!

Posted by: Pug Mahon ----- It's the water. The vodka you're drinking is between 80 and 100 proof, which means that 50-60% of what's in your mouth is water. There are definitely taste differences, especially at the upper end, and it has to do with the water they cut it with. If you want the best vodka you've ever tasted, it's simple. Do a bunch of taste tests on various waters Fiji, Evian, etc. When you find your favorite, mix it 50-50 with 190 Everclear. It'll be as good or better than whatever you think is a good vodka. Okay, here's an excellent gin, the very concept of which will test the limits of your tolerance.
Nah. I keed, I keed. The gin is- Awayuki Gin which is a very good London style gin with the addition of 3 rare breeds of Japanese strawberries in the botanicals. Normally, I'd stay far away from fruity gin, however if you've ever been to Japan, you know just how good and tasty their strawberries are. So, I was willing to give it a try. It tastes very very good. Excellent. Because the gin in London Dry, it is very juniper forward but right along with the juniper are the strawberries in flavor and scent. The strawberry smells and tastes very natural. It mixes well in various cocktails with 2:1 Martini using Martini and Rossi Speciale Reserva Ambrato vermouth and a strawberry instead of an olive perhaps being our favorite. Anyway, we plowed through the bottle. If this sounds good to you, it will be. Give it a whirl. Posted by: naturalfake at April 12, 2026 05:25 PM (iJfKG) 123

It was super fun. Some pairings were off, some were amazing. Weird chocolates should be tasted in very small amounts, the whole truffle will mar the experience. Cut it into quarters. Posted by: nurse ratched at April 12, 2026 05:57 PM (A5RD0) 155
naturalfake, I was gifted a bottle of a special run of bourbon that was finished in a green walnut cask. I made a bourbon cream out of some of it and it was a sure fire winner. I can't get anymore of that bourbon so I'm looking for a substitute.
Posted by: Ben Had at April 12, 2026 05:47 PM (yAteE) that's a tough one. I suppose if I couldn't find the same bourbon, and wanted a similar effect I'd add a bit of Nocino liqueur to the bourbon because it would have the same flavors. Posted by: naturalfake at April 12, 2026 05:58 PM (iJfKG) 156

Posted by: Pete Bog at April 12, 2026 05:54 PM (WlUfk) Ford's is pretty great. Several years ago the guys who created it wanted to make a tasty gin that could be sold for bartender use. Notice the bottle shape...easy too grab and pour. They were successful. Fords is a great gin and good in just about any cocktail or G&T. If you've had chicken pox there's a good chance that you might get shingles. It's the same virus. After you get over the chicken pox, the virus "hides" in your nerve cells and comes out to play when you're older by traveling down the nerve axons and erupting. I was pretty much done with Dunkin Donuts after the "Crisco" scare ruined their product. Their Bavarian cream was a favorite, but the standard DD was my go to. When I moved to CA, you could get a Boston cream at any local Fosters, but tell them to swap the chocolate glaze with powdered sugar? May as well ask them to split an atom.
Anyway, before Dunkin "arrived" in California, my only hope for a Bavarian Cream was when visiting family in NJ. After that whole transfat BS, I walk into the DD that was local to the folks, hoping to scratch that itch. What I encountered was a dry, tasteless, stale dinner roll that completely masked any redeeming quality of the cream filling. I knew from that moment that my government was out to destroy everything that was good and decent in life... Posted by: Joe Kidd at April 12, 2026 06:46 PM (nbLIj) 238

153 Not in Oregon. Check your state's laws. While mine is generally very homebrew-friendly, it's also very uptight about liquor; the OLCC inspires Stasi-worthy terror in everyone from restaurant owners to store cashiers, and it keeps an iron grip on state-owned retailing of distilled spirits. And it's illegal at the state level to distill alcohol outside of a properly licensed non-residential facility.

I think it was about 20 years ago, give or take, there was a joint (I think it had Dugout in the name) across from Portland's major-league soccer/minor-league baseball stadium, where the proprietor rejected a Texas DL as turnabout for his friend's experience in Texas. The spurned was some kind of bigshot and it turned into quite the brouhaha. I don't recall if the two states ever came to an accommodation. Posted by: SciVo at April 12, 2026 06:57 PM (Sy6m/) 250

With a mere fraction of Elon Musk money, I'd open a franchise called "Fuckin' Donuts", and let Dunkin take me all the way to the Supreme Court. Our mission statement would be, "It's a donut. It's supposed to shorten your lifespan"
