Looking at the map, there are 4 small islands in the Straits that have far more strategic importance than Kharg does; those are what I would use the marines for.

Kharg has economic and political significance, but not much military importance. It can be shut down just by shutting down its supply pipelines. And from a military standpoint, it’d be a terrible thing to get stuck fighting inside a huge refinery, everything around you could blow up at any time.

Turns out the mission won't orbit the Moon, but basically swing around it and come back. But it's doing that at an altitude over the lunar surface far greater than the Apollo missions.
