Well, Spring is definitely in the air! I managed to get a photo of something rarely seen in the wild--two FedEx trucks mating. Number of offspring varies, but delivery sometimes happens later that same day. Thanks for the weekend threads! BeckoningChasm ![]() Cherry Blossoms Hi I finally made the walk to Kenwood. This was the first time I was able to do a walk of that length since well before my hip surgery but I had a goal. Was determined to get there. And it was just in time. Blossoms had mostly gone white already and when the wind blew it was raining blossoms. The little yellow flowers were literally a carpet on the forest floor. The other pictures are mostly Kenwood where the trees are just ancient and have shapes out of a fantasy novel. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Hi KT! Hope you're doing well. I've been absent from Saturday postings for awhile, but I wanted to share this photo of our red bud tree. Back in 2021, our first spring at the new house, I got one of those free tree packs from the Arbor Day Foundation. Since all we had was bare clay around the place (we built in a field) I had to put them all in pots. Eventually, they made it into 10" pots. We got the red bud into the ground in early summer of 2024, and it's budding now. So cool! Two hawthornes and two crapemyrtles survived as of last year, still in pots. My Darwinian torture chamber of procrastination and neglect produces hardy survivors. I'll try to get a photo of the whole tree later on, when it starts to get leaves. Publius said it's a nice-looking tree, and he rarely gives unsolicited commentary on the plantings around here. He likes the hostas, too. Their little horns are sticking up. My current project consists of digging up wild onions, which are EV.REE.WHERE. MileyThanks for the great photo, information and garden update. I see a few Redbud blossoms sneaking out on that three last week . . . ---- I once heeled in four bare root roses for later planting, got lazy and neglected them, and let them bloom right in that spot. Hi morons, yes the clematis is trained on a climbing rose which I'm afraid may have been killed in the process.

Haven't decided on vegetable plants yet. My garden location is getting worse every year as more shade than sun . Its down to lmid afternoon now, and before end of summer maybe 4 hours of direct sun.

Had a nice surprise this week. About 40 years ago we planted a few grape hyacinth. Wasn't our smartest placement: by the edge of the driveway where it gets the brunt of snow and ice, run over by our car and any snowplows, many dogs walking by and mowed over. The plot is usually only good for grass and dandelions. Damned if we don't have some coming up. They aren't tall but they are visible, sort of shy. But they are still here. I find that encouraging.

This is such a gorgeous time of year, even if the weather can't decide if it's winter or spring. (80s today but highs in the 50s in the forecast.) But the daffodils are in full bloom, the tulips are showing and the blossoming trees seem to glow in the bright sunlight. It's breathtaking.

I planted a few more fruit trees. I got the Golden Delicious planted and added a Red Haven peach and Nanking cherry. I've ordered an apricot. I am thinking about having a small area behind the garden tilled up, in cae I decide to add something else. I need to get the garden planted but it's been very windy.

The photos in the gardening thread are always nice but that one of the clematis at the top should be framed and hung on a wall.

From Boise area: Lows 30-46 F, highs 48-65. Some rain Mon. night through Wed. afternoon, then a snow flurry and a "tiny hail" flurry Thursday.
Hopefully the 2 pear trees' flowers were not damaged in the frost - peach flowers were probably already pollinated. Redbud is gorgeous, dogwood starting to show fat buds. I should send in a photo of our forsythia. The lily of the valley under the forsythia will probably crowd out the few surviving daffodils, which I will dig - along with all the bulbs behind the kitchen - so we can fill the raised bed we plan behind the kitchen as part of dealing with the drainage issue. We bought some paving edgers for the back of the house project idea. Also trying to decide what to do with annoying barberry bushes immediately in front of the house... they tore up my Pine Tree flag. I repotted all 5 surviving SunGold tomatoes, 2 red bell peppers and 2 poblanos. I'm leaving the smaller pepper plants in the original six-packs to grow more, especially more roots. Have not yet caught the second raccoon. Hoping it isn't a pregnant female... A blessed Easter to all! Well, looks like it will be above freezing during the day all this week. We still have about two feet of snow on the south side (in the garden), and a bit more on the north side. However, the planter against the house on the south side is snow free, and that's where I planted a bunch of bulbs last fall. No action yet since it is still well below freezing at night, but I'm hopeful.
Started my indoor starts this past week. With any luck, I will be in the greenhouse in about a month. Tons of work to do in the raised beds. I need to dig out all of the crappy strawberry plants and that nasty rhubarb, and replace them with actual, productive stuff. Need to top all of the beds with new dirt, too. Wish my shoulder worked better since there will be a lot of digging. Maybe I can get the dogs to help! Posted by: tcn in AK at April 04, 2026 02:51 PM (DwqWV) 23
I bought a 10' crepe myrtle last fall (got a big one because I'm impatient), and it looked dead to me, although the twig ends were flexible. This week, the little leaves started to appear!
Yard man mowed the grass last Sunday, and in 2 days, dandelion stems shot up by 6-8 inches all over the yard! crazy looking. Breezy and warm today in the Appalachian mountains. Have a blessed Easter, friends. Posted by: Beverly at April 04, 2026 02:54 PM (reMys) 24

A dog sat on my little 12" tall star magnolia, bending its shaft at the base. :-(
I straightened it, added a stake for support, and fastened it loosely with a twist tie. It seems to be surviving so far... Posted by: Beverly at April 04, 2026 02:58 PM (reMys) 27
Huzzah! I think we're safely past False Springs and fully into True Spring, with the chance of the odd False Winter striking before planting season begins in earnest. Because Michigan.
I planted my fall mums and mounded mulch around them and Huzzah!, some of them seem to have survived the winter. Posted by: All Hail Eris, She-Wolf of the 'Ettes 'Ettes. at April 04, 2026 03:06 PM (kpS4V) 28
Wife said she read that the Clematis should be cut off to about 6 inches above ground for the Winter, so that is what she does.

My dianthus started blooming aggressively 2 days ago. I think the daylilies will start coming out pretty soon, but the blanket flowers look like crap. I'll see soon about hibiscus.
But I'm going to turn over the annual patches to vegetables next week. I'm tired of not getting anything to eat but herbs and tea. I'm thinking herbs, peppers, & tomatillos on one patch, for a green chile garden. Then some tomatos and other herbs for a pizza garden. Not sure what to do with the the third one. It's smaller. I planted cabbages today, and I planted onions last week. It feels too early to plant, but I am starting anyways. It is going to be a while before I will plant the corn.
Mom used to try to plant beginning in June, but she taught school, and that was when she had time to work the garden. Posted by: Kindltot at April 04, 2026 03:29 PM (rbvCR) 36

I need to frame that and hang it on my wall 😂 The poppies are starting to bloom in the compost pile (they HATE manicured gardens), the jackmanii clematis is starting to come up, the tiny rosebush is starting to bud, and the lawn service just planted vincas in the flower beds for the summer. We have some antique roses scheduled to be delivered for planting in a week or so - it will be nice to have those back after all these years! When I got my diagnosis (6-12 month prognosis) 18 months ago, I asked our lawn service to find me a red Japanese maple to plant in our front garden by our (pre-fab) tiny pond.
I am happy to report that this year it is absolutely beautiful, and still giving me joy ♥️♥️♥️ And all of the bulbs that they planted for me have been blooming their hearts out! I am watching stuff I planted last year slowly emerge. May have to replace my azalea which is brown and ugly. Going to wait and see if it recovers but looks pretty bad.
